Adding/Subtracting Fractions and Using Data

This unit is an extension of Unit 2 and 5. Students will be asked to add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators. Students will have to convert to a mixed number is their answer is an improper fraction. Students will also be working with data landmarks again. They will be asked to find the mean, median, mode, range, maximum, and minimum of a set. Students will also have to find the "new" mean if a new data point is added to a set. They will also be introduced to double bars graphs and how to analyze the meaning of the data.
Skills and Goals:
- Add and subtract fractions with possible regrouping needed
- Add and subtract mixed numbers (no regrouping assessed at this time)
- Find the landmark numbers of a set of data (mean, media, mode, range, max, and min)
- Find the new mean of a data set when adding in a new data piece
- Display and analyze a set of data in a double bar graph
- Match line plots to various possible situations
- Match an addition/subtraction fraction model to its proper number sentence
- Without solving, estimate if a fraction addition/subtract problem is closer to 0, 1/2, or 1
