The first science unit of the year investigates how studying smaller environments will help us to understand the larger environments in the world. Students will investigate environmental factors for plants, beetles, isopods, and brine shrimp. At the end of the unit, students will have a final group investigation. They will create an investigable question, set-up and conduct an experiment to find out if salt water can be used to grow crops due to a drought.
Skills and Goals:
Students will understand that:
- factors in the environment affect living organisms ability to grow, develop and reproduce.
- humans have an impact on the environment in positive and negative ways.
- conducting small controlled experiments can help you understand the natural world on a larger scale.
- natural systems, like plants and animals, have many parts that interact to maintain the living system and provide an advantage for survival.
Students will know:
- environmental factors (water, light and temperature) affect terrestrial (land) and aquatic (water) systems.
- humans can change the environment.
- an ecosystem is a community of living things, together with their environment.
- all organisms have specific requirements for successful growth, development, and reproduction.
- organisms are found in environments that provide them with suitable living conditions.
