This unit focuses on understanding place value, what numbers mean, estimation, strategies for adding and subtracting numbers, and a beginning look landmark numbers. This is a pretty extensive unit and strategies for adding and subtracting are different than what parents have learned in the past. Use the videos at the bottom to help you better understand the strategies that your child may be using.
Skills and Goals:
- make magnitude estimates for adding, subtracting, and multiplication problems
- add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers and decimals - in story problems and bare number problems
- use the inverse (adding or subtracting) to check the answer to a problem
- break apart numbers into expanded notation ( 425 in expanded notation is 400 + 20 +5)
- be able to find 0.1, 0.01, 0.001 more or less than a number
- find the maximum, minimum, range, media, and mode of a given set of data
- find a new number than can be included in a set of data to give you a new median
