*If your student fails a class, especially English, math, science or social studies, it is in their best interest to attend summer school to reover that credit.
School Supply Information: bring a notebook & something to write with. If a teacher requires something specific, they will let you know, otherwise use what you are comfortable with for each class.
How to be an Observer in Canvas: visit the Affton HS website, click on MENU at the top, scroll to Parent Resources and find Canvas Login+, click, click Parent of a Canvas User?, you will need a pairing code from your student.
Stay Informed: Each Sunday the high school sends out the School Spotlight with information specific to the high school. The district also sends out the Update for Families each Sunday. You can also follow the district/school on Social Media for updates or the website afftonschools.net
Schedules: Student schedules will NOT be changed once school starts, except for the following reasons:
1. The student has been misplaced (the class is above/below student's comprehension level per teacher recommendation or the student doesn't have the prerequisite)
(this is within the first two weeks of the semester, or possibly within the first 4 weeks if the student is moving from an honors course, but is up to admin/counselor approval
2. The change is necessary to meet graduation requirements.
3. The student has already taken the class and passed it.
4. The student had the teacher in a previous course and failed, when possible
5. The student has an incomplete schedule.
6. Administrative decision that the chane is in the best interest of the student. (meaning admin has made the request)
A+: Contact Dr. Buck with any questions. A+ offers two year tuition free at a Missouri Junior College (STLCC, Jefferson College & Ranken for example). Requirements must be met by the end of senior year.

Does a certain GPA need to be upheld in order to play sports? Does the $35 for sports cover the supplies/uniforms and is there a limit on how many sports my children can participate in?
Student athletes must maintain a minimum GPA of 1.5, which is recalculated every six weeks (each term)
Is ESports a club or considered a sport? Can a student do both ESports and a traditional sport (like wrestling)?
ESports is a club & students can do ESports and a traditional sport; however, they will miss some ESports practices because they are the same time as sports practices and may have a conflict with tournaments/games if they do both
Is there a course book that shows you the things that are covered in each class?
Summer school options, times and what is offered for pre freshman
All courses will be virtual at home due to construction taking place at AHS and RMS this summer
Freshmen can take the following courses: Online Enrichment courses for incoming 9th graders (see below) These courses will count toward the students credits and gpa for high school
Hours: Teacher assistance will be available M-F from 8-3; however since everything is online students can access the courses and complete work any day at any time
In this one-semester course, students develop essential study skills for academic success, such as staying organized, managing time, taking notes, applying reading strategies, writing strong papers, and researching and properly citing information. Explicit modeling and ample practice are provided for each study skill to support student mastery. Instruction on how to be a responsible online learner is threaded throughout the course, and these skills are directly addressed in lessons on cyberbullying, staying safe online, and becoming a digital leader. A basic understanding of software and hardware and how to troubleshoot common technology
issues are also taught. By the end of the course, students will have the tools they need to be academically successful in both traditional and digital learning environments.

Engineering Essentials is a full-year course designed to be a high school student’s first exposure to the PLTW Engineering program and is appropriate for students in grades 9-12. In Engineering Essentials, students explore the work of engineers and their role in the design and development of solutions to real-world problems.
The course introduces students to engineering concepts that are applicable across multiple engineering disciplines and empowers them to build technical skills through the use of a variety of engineering tools, such as geographic information systems (GIS), 3-D solid modeling software, and prototyping equipment. Students learn and apply the engineering design process to develop mechanical, electronic, process, and logistical solutions to relevant problems across a variety of industry sectors, including health care, public service, and product development and manufacturing.
Using PLTW’s activity-, project-, problem-based (APB) instructional approach, students advance from completing structured activities to solving open-ended projects and problems that provide opportunities to develop planning and technical documentation skills, as well as in-demand, transportable skills, such as problem solving, critical and creative thinking, collaboration, communication, and ethical reasoning. The last is particularly important as the course encourages students to consider the impacts of engineering decisions.
Through both individual and collaborative team activities, projects, and problems, students create solutions to problems as they practice common engineering design and development protocols, such as experimental design, testing, project management, and peer review. In addition, the course emphasizes statistical analysis and mathematical modeling – computational methods that are commonly used in engineering problem-solving.
