General Careers Information and Help
CareerPilot is a fun and useful website and also offers a free careers app for young people, parents and carers in the South West. This can help young people in the South West explore all their choices and plan their futures and has been launched by a consortium managed by the University of Bath.
The Careerpilot app is aimed at 13 to 19 year olds, and includes:
· information on all the pathways choices available at 14, 16 and 18 - including apprenticeships, A levels and the many routes to Higher Education;
· information on 18 job sectors;
· links to post 16 providers in the South West.
The information from the app comes from the main Careerpilot site www.careerpilot.org.uk which has even more useful careers
information. The free app can be downloaded from www.careerpilotapp.org.uk.
You can check out the National Careers Service which is a Government run website. It has lots of interesting and suitable advice on there, including CV writing and Careers Advice.

There is also Career Camel which has lots of jobs, training opportunities and attention-grabbing articles showing the correlation between qualifications and earning power for example!
Future Talent offer apprenticeship and training vacancies. They also offer help on various aspects of the whole process such as how to write a covering letter.The guide ‘Alternatives to University 2014’ on their home page is worth looking through and if you would like a hard copy, please ask me.
If you are looking for an Apprenticeship it is very important you make the most of your profile, so that it presents you in the best possible way. Remember, not only can you apply for jobs but potential employers and training providers can view your details when they are trying to find someone for a job. If you need help completing your profile, take a look at the top tips in the link below. Please also remember that their partners – the Training Providers, FE Colleges and Employers that they work with - will be able to see your details when you are trying to fill vacancies. Ensuring that all candidates' details are up to date is a great starting point in helping you secure an offer.

The National Minimum Wage (NMW) regulations depend on your age, but there is also a special rate for apprentices who are under the age of 19 or are in the first year of their apprenticeship. The table below summarises the position.

The site has useful sections for both parents and prospective apprentices; including vacancies, mentoring opportunities and FAQ’s (including pay and benefits).
Once registered, you can receive the updates directly as well as further information. It is important to realise that these reports are used only as a guide, and that you should log onto Apprenticeship vacancies for the most up to date information. Once registered you can save preferences and set up alerts if looking for a vacancy that does not appear on these reports. New vacancies are constantly being added so one may come up at any time, and the website will alert you to this.

Please click on the link below for an amazing opportunity to apply for an advanced apprenticeship with the Ministry of Defence. This is a wonderful offer and I would encourage any students interested in becoming an engineer with the MOD to read and apply!
It does not state the age of applicants, but they ask for 5 GCSE’s grade C minimum (inc. English, Maths & 1 Science) so they may be looking for slightly older students, but I would advise applying anyway or remembering the position as they advertise these positions annually.
