Backing Storage

Exercise:

Using a suitable website such as the PC World website, create a poster using Serif PagePlus showing all the different types of backing storage that you know about.

For each type of backing storage you have on your poster, you should include the following information:

• The name of the storage medium
• A picture of the storage medium
• The capacity, or a range of capacities for the medium
• The typical cost of the medium

Calculate how many files could be stored on the following backing storage devices:

How many of the following files could be stored on a 1 terabyte hard disc:

1) Films, assuming each film is 6 gigabytes in size

2) Photographs, assuming each photo is 2.5 megabytes in size

How many of each of the following files could be stored on a 4 gigabyte DVD-r:

3) Films, assuming each film is 6 gigabytes in size

4) Photographs, assuming each photograph is 3 megabytes in size

5) Text documents, assuming each document is 256 kilobytes in size

How many of each of the following files could be stored on a 1 gigabyte USB memory stick:

6) Songs, assuming each song is 6.5 megabytes in size

7) Documents, assuming each document is 512 kilobytes in size
