Design & Gathering Information

Problem Description:

You have been asked to create a website that is about the music that you like. The website is to have three pages: A home page, a page about one band or singer that you like and a page about another band or singer that you like.

Your website has to be multimedia. It should include different types of information, including text, pictures, sound and video.

Your website should be easy to navigate. It should include hyperlinks that lead to other pages and a navigation bar that helps users find the pages that they want.

Your website should be well designed. It should make good use of formatting and colours that make the website readable and attractive to look at. The layout of each page should be well thought out and uncluttered.

Design:

For the My Music Website, the design layout has been created for you. In the future you will have to work out website designs for yourself.

The first part of the design is the structure. This shows how the pages in the website relate to each other:

The layout shows how each page of the website will look. It shows where the text, pictures and other elements of each page will be placed.

There are actually four page layouts in the design. The fourth is the master page, which shows the parts of the web pages that will appear on every page in the site.

Task 1:

The design is incomplete. You still have to make some choices about the way the website will appear. Complete the following table in your worksheet:

Gathering Information:

Before you start creating the website, you should collect all the media that you are going to use in it. You can work out exactly what pictures, sound clips and videos you will need by looking closely at the design.

Task 2:

Create a list of all the media files you need to find by completing the first two columns of the following table in your worksheet. You may need more rows than those shown on the table below.

Task 3:

Create a new folder in your documents called My Music Website. You should cut and paste any media files that you download into this folder.

Your teacher will show you how to download images, sounds and videos. It is important that you download file with a high resolution, or good quality. If you download thumbnails instead, your website will not look as good. A Google image search is a good way to find pictures. A website such as Youtube is a good place to find audio and video clips - you can't download them, but you can make a note of the web address of the clips.

Using the table you created for Task 1, find and download all the media files you need to create your My Music Website. Rename the files you download so they have a meaningful filename. Make a note of the filename in the table you created for Task 1.

Extension Task:

Find additional files that might be useful in your website. Download them and cut and paste them to your My Music Website folder. You do not need to record them in your table.
