French I 1 Credit
In this course students will learn the basics of the French language. Emphasis will be placed on developing reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Students will study many vocabulary themes and grammar points as well as be introduced to cultural information regarding schools, travel, food, etc. In addition to keeping an organized notebook, students will complete a variety of projects and daily homework assignments that will strengthen their language skills.
*Prerequisite: Teacher approval, with C or better in 8th Grade Foreign Language and a C or better in English.
French II 1 Credit
This course is a continuation of French I. Students will expand their knowledge of French and sharpen their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. The emphasis in French II will be on increasing vocabulary, the formation and use of many more verb tenses and finer grammatical points. In addition to keeping and organized notebook, students will complete a variety of projects and daily homework assignments that will strengthen their language their language skills.
*Prerequisite: French I with C or better & teacher recommendation
French III 1 Credit
French III involves a study of vocabulary in written context--cultural readings, media articles, short stories, and poetry. The emphasis in French III will be on increasing vocabulary, the formation and use of advanced verb tenses, and speaking, reading, and writing more fluidly. To familiarize students with culturally rich areas of France, students will explore the Loire Valley and conduct an in-depth study of its history, people, and castles. Students will complete a variety of projects and daily homework assignments that will strengthen their language skills.
*Prerequisite: French II with C or better & teacher recommendation
French IV and French V 1 Credit
Through the use of texts, authentic French materials, videos, and the Internet, students will also refine and master grammar points and work on full conjunctions of verb tenses. Reading, writing, listening and speaking skills will be fine-tuned and perfected. Students will complete daily homework assignments, as well as a variety of projects to help advance their language proficiency. For those intending to go to college, this class will help prepare for college placement tests and college level French courses.
