Hailed from a family of farmers in Purok-1, Maygatasan, Bayugan, Agusan del Sur, Wendell J. Bayot experienced first-hand the hardships and knew well how hard it is to provide the basic needs of the family with a meager salary. A feat which is almost next to impossible. However, such difficulties didn’t waver him from achieving his dreams armed only with an ambition to improve his family’s quality of life.

His life on poverty started to change when his father asked him to study the then-Two-Year Electrical Technology in Agusan del Sur School of Arts and Trades (ASSAT) which he graduated in 2007 as the top honor student of his batch. He then proceeded to work in the local electric cooperative of the province, the Agusan del Sur Electric Cooperative (ASELCO) where he built his character and garnered enough courage to venture bigger opportunities in the Philippines and proceeded working outside the country.

His first stint started in 2009 until 2011 at the Monolith Construction and Development Corporation as an electrician and site supervisor where he earned a decent salary, enough to extend financial aid to his family in Mindanao.

As his younger siblings were still in school and greatly needed his help, Wen opted to seek job opportunities abroad. In October 2011, Wen landed at the Elconcorde Saudi Construction Limited in Riyadh as an electrician with a 25,000.00 Philippine peso wage. After two years, he was promoted as a supervisor where he earned 30,000.00 Philippine pesos monthly until October 2014.

In November 2014, only a month after he left his previous employer, Wen started working at the Zuhair Fayes Partnership as an electrical inspector which he earned 4,000 Saudi Arabia Riyals (SAR) or 50,000.00 Philippine pesos.

While working in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Wen took the examination for Registered Master Electrician (RME) which he passed.

He then quit in this company in March 2017 in favor of another job opportunity: the Azmeel Contracting Company, an approved contracting company of Saudi Aramco. He worked in this company as quality control engineer from June 2017 until December of the same year before he transferred to Permasteelisa CEM Estero JV in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as a quality control inspector where he was offered a salary of 60,000.00 Philippine pesos before he took a short break and went back to the Philippines to spend time with his family.

In March 2019, Wen applied as an electrical inspector under the General Inspection Services (GIS) of Appluse Velosi Saudi Arabia Company where he is offered a monthly of whopping 6,500 SAR or Php80, 000.00.

With this series of job stints, Wen was able to finance his brothers' and sisters’ education, making them professionals in their own chosen careers. He further mused that the experiences he had with his previous employers served as his milestones in ensuring that he gave his utmost skills in providing quality services entrusted to him by the company he has worked with.

In the future, Wen plans on putting up a poultry farm and real estate apartments if his finances permit. To make this plan work, he shares that he is not only aiming for positions with a higher salary but he got his eyes on the experiences he can have each work offers.

“Concentrate on your careers. You will discover that your training in TESDA now is a step and key to your …work. Apply your skills and training properly. [Then], explore what technology has to offer.”

He also emphasized the vital role of experience towards success. Wen claims that it is important to experience various works from one company to the next. “Explore outside your towns. Go to bigger cities [and take] different job positions in line with your skills…” to widen your opportunities —and sustainable salary goes along with it.

In the end, Wen surmised that the ultimate goal of working overseas is for him to “build his own business where he can stay in the Philippines with his family…for him to live a happy life.” ###MMD, AMK
