In the early 1300s, four cities had been acknowledged as trade centers in Italy. These were Florence, Venice, Milan, and Genoa. These cities grew wealthy through trade with far away places such as Asia. These were located along the coast, as to be able to trade with other lands near Italy, as well as anyone who sailed through the Mediterranean to Italy. Because so many people came to these cities, the people living there had many different cultures. Each city-state was ruled by its own government, so that none could be all-powerful. Generally, a wealthy family called a signori would have the most influence over a trade city, just because they had the most money.
