The Renaissance was a period of time in Europe that began in the 14th century and ended in the 17th century. It began in Italy and eventually spread to the rest of Europe. During this time period, many people became interested in subjects such as art, traveling, literature, education, and humanism. There were four major trading cities in Italy that helped begin the Renaissance. These four cities were Florence, Genoa, Milan, and Venice. Trading ships from different countries would meet at these trading cities and would share their cultural ideas with each other and would also bring these ideas back to their home country. These cultural ideas would eventually combine to create the basis of the Renaissance ideas. Some ideas that changed during the Renaissance were related to art. Artists during the Renaissance began using different techniques to paint, such as depth and perspective which give their pictures a three dimensional feeling. During the Renaissance, some of the most famous paintings in the world were created, such as "The Last Supper" and the "Mona Lisa." Another idea that changed during the Renaissance was literature. During the Medieval Ages, most books focused on fantasy and religion. However, during the Renaissance, the focus of books began to shift more towards humanism and politics rather than fantasy and religion. Humanism is the study of subjects that are unrelated to religion. It began in the 14th century and is considered to be one of the many factors that led to the Renaissance. During the Renaissance, many achievements were made. Some of those achievements include astronomy, engineering, and the creation of the press.
