Using Linux Flash Drives

We currently have 15 bootable flash drives, each with a copy of LUbuntu linux and various astronomical programs preinstalled. They were developed mainly for use with the old Toshiba laptops used by students at Yerkes.

Start Linux on Toshiba laptops

To boot from these drives on these Toshiba laptops, do the following:

    • Plug USB drive into laptop USB port.
    • Press power button
    • Quickly press F2 to bring up BIOS setup menu
    • Use right arrow key to move to the "Boot" tab
    • Make sure the "HDD" menu is highlighted.
    • Press enter
    • Use down arrow key to highlight "pny USB 2.0 FD-(USB)"
    • Press F6
    • The "pny USB..." option should now be above the "HTS..." option
    • Press Escape (esc)
    • Make sure "Exit Saving Changes" is highlighted in white.
    • Press enter
    • Confirm
    • Press Enter
    • Wait for computer to start LUbuntu

Login

    • Please login under the "student" account. The password is located on the box where the flash drives are stored.

Connecting to the internet

    • Click the "slice-of-pie"-shaped icon at the bottom right corner of the screen. See image below. You should see the wireless network menu appear.
    • Choose one of the available Yerkes wireless networks.
    • It will ask you for the student user password FIRST. Enter that password (if you don't know it, it's written on the flash drive box).
    • Next it will ask you for the wireless network password. Enter that now. If you don't know it, it's on the "Yerkes Computing" section of this website. Press ENTER.
    • You are now connected to the wireless network. Enjoy the internet!
