The astronomy merit badge is one of the more demanding badges in the BSA line-up. Your trip to Yerkes Observatory will cover many of the requirements but not all. You should plan your trip to correspond with one of the regular public star parties held monthly at Yerkes. Plan to arrive one hour before the start of the public party. We will use this hour to mark off requirements that you have already completed and prepare you for the evening's events. Make arrangements in advance by contacting Kate Meredith. She will be your official merit badge counselor. If you do some work before you arrive, you will be able to complete the merit badge that evening.
Costs
The cost for this event including the star party will be $10 per scout. As per BSA policy, the troop will provide at least two chaperones. Their admission is free.
Things to do in Advance
Every boy in the troop should have their own copy of the astronomy merit badge worksheet with his name and troop number printed on each page. Each boy should come prepared to participate safely in the outdoors for the evening. This will be the first point of discussion for the evening. We recommend that each boy have a clipboard, pencil and flashlight in addition to seasonally appropriate clothing. Troops must also provide a completed blue card, ready to be signed by Yerkes staff.
