Course Policy
Iron Horse Middle School
Physical Education Guidelines
2023-2024
Dear Parents:
As we begin a new school year, it is important for students to understand the policies and expectations they will be held accountable for during the school year. It is essential for teachers and parents to encourage students to assume responsibility for their classroom preparation, performance, behavior, and to develop personal pride in their success. Please review the following information with your child and complete the course policy acknowledgment at the bottom of the page.
DRESS POLICY: To ensure a safe environment for participation and promote hygiene, students change into a color specific PE uniform everyday. Safety is our number one concern and sharing the PE fields with the community at all hours of the day makes it very important that your student comes to class with the correct uniform as noted below. Students who are not prepared for the day will be given a loaner uniform. Students who refuse to wear the loaner uniform will be referred to the office and will receive a zero for participation. One of the overall goals of the physical education department is to teach students responsibility and make them accountable for their actions.
ACCEPTABLE DRESS: Iron Horse physical education color specific clothing or uniform must be worn during class. This includes a TEAL T-shirt, black shorts, black sweat pants, and or TEAL sweatshirt. Sweats not worn to school and of a different color may be worn UNDER the PE uniform during colder weather.
All clothing worn for physical education will be labeled with the name so that every effort can be made to return lost clothing to the proper owner. Students wearing a uniform that is not their own will be asked to change back into their school clothes and will not be able to participate in that day's activities.
Students will be asked to take their clothes home every Friday to wash and be returned on Monday.
Clothes worn to school may not be worn under the uniform.
SHOES: Athletic shoes with laces and socks are appropriate footwear. As a safety precaution, students wearing inappropriate footwear will not be allowed to participate in that day and will lose participation points accordingly:
The following are NOT considered appropriate footwear for PE:
CROCS
fashion shoes
boots
slip on shoes
Non-Athletic Shoes with a raised heel
We strongly suggest bringing an extra pair of socks to be kept in your students locker.
LOCKER ROOM POLICY:
Jewelry is not to be worn in class. Secure all jewelry and valuables in your locker before leaving the locker room. It is advisable not to wear valuables or sentimental jewelry to school, as we cannot be held responsible for lost or stolen items.
Students can purchase a lock from the PE department for $7.00. We strongly suggest that all students buy a lock from the PE department, because emergencies or other events may require teachers or school officials to access student lockers. Due to safety concerns, any unauthorized lock will be removed. Replacement locks may be purchased any time during the school year from any of the PE teachers. Locks may be used in our Iron Horse locker room and can continue to be used in the high school locker rooms as well.
Due to a variety of allergies, make-up, scented lotions, and spray deodorants are not to be brought to class or stored in lockers.
Every student will be expected to do their part in keeping the locker room as clean and sanitary as possible. NO EATING, GUM CHEWING, DRINKING, will be allowed at any time.
Locker room privileges will be removed for any student with excessive tardies or inappropriate behavior.
Students are NOT permitted to enter the locker rooms during class. Students needing to obtain personal items/feminine products, will need to request permission from their teacher to go to the main office. Students who are found entering the locker room without permission will receive the following consequences:
Lunchtime detention
After school detention
Administrative Referral
Electronic Devices (Phones, Ear buds, ChromeBooks)
During PE electronic devices are PROHIBITED
Devices brought to or used during PE will be taken to the front office for after school pick-up.
Students will be asked to voluntarily hand over devices if seen/used. Failure to do so will result in an administrative referral.
STUDENT BEHAVIOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Respect other people and their property at all times.
DRESS OUT DAILY AND BE READY TO PARTICIPATE.
Exhibit proper behavior at all times.
Use equipment in a safe and appropriate way. Equipment should NEVER be used without a teacher present.
Report any injury that may occur in class to your teacher before you leave.
ABSENCES/MEDICAL EXCUSES:
If you are absent, a parent or guardian is required to call the attendance office to clear the absence. Not having an absence cleared may result in a cut and loss of credit. If you need to be excused from active PE participation, please follow one of the following procedures:
Parent/guardian note: Bring a dated, handwritten note signed by a parent or guardian with a phone number. The note must include the reason you must be excused from class and how many days you will be out of PE. A parent may only excuse you for three days. In the event you need to be excused for more than three days, a doctor’s note is required. If you need to be excused from only part of the activity, running, jumping, etc. please indicate that in the note.
Doctor’s note: If you will miss more than three days of PE, a note from a doctor is required. Please have the note indicate why you will be out and for how long. Extended time out of PE will require alternate assignments to make-up for class time missed.
Late arrival to class:
Students must be in uniform, out of the locker room, and finishing their warm-up within the first 8 minutes of class. Students who do not meet this requirement will be considered tardy.
Students should be prepared to dress out for class even if they are excused from class.
BATHROOM/HALL PASS
The PE department will be using a Hall pass system. Students that need to leave class for any reason, must speak with their teacher to obtain a HALL PASS. Students who leave class without permission will receive the following consequences:
1) Lunchtime Detention
2) After School Detention
3) Administrative Referral/Consequences
MAKE-UPS: Students who miss PE due to injury or illness will receive daily participation credit for the first three days missed during the quarter. The fourth and subsequent absences/medicals will require a make-up. See your teacher for make-up assignments. Any run day, HIIT, test/quiz, or other written assignment must be made-up. Missed runs, HIIT workouts and absences can be made up weekly during our tutorial period. Students may choose what day(s) to complete make-ups. It is the student’s responsibility to get any missed/make-up assignment.
Students who are present in class but choose not to participate in a timed mile/HIIT/Cardio activity will be assigned to a monthly "mandatorial." Students without a parent or doctor note excusing them from the timed mile or cardio activity will not be able to choose their make up day and will be assigned to a monthly "mandatorial."
HOMEWORK and LATE ASSIGNMENTS: Students may periodically have homework assignments in Physical Education. Assignments will be posted in schoology. All assignments are expected to be turned in on or before their due date. Late assignments will be accepted at the discretion of their teacher. Late work will not receive full credit.
