I. Superintendent’s Report
SAS
Wednesday, October 23rd, 2024: A group of Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary Atoms were delighted when SANY Superintendent Dr. Tolga Hayali stopped by Ms. Raymond and Ms. Figueroa's 1B classroom for a special read-aloud! Dr. Hayali told the scholars all about his role as a superintendent and then treated them to a fun reading of "The Good Egg." The #SASAtoms showed excellent listening skills and enjoyed every moment of the story! Thank you, Dr. Hayali, for making this day so memorable. We can’t wait for your next visit!
Tuesday, October 22nd, 2024: Syracuse Academy of Science 6th and 7th-grade students had the incredible opportunity to learn from the New York State Department of Transportation experts about the massive I-81 viaduct project here in Syracuse! Our Atoms were fascinated to hear about this $2.25 billion project, which aims to transform how we get around the city by creating new access points to make getting downtown more accessible and efficient. With an estimated five-year timeline, this project will bring significant changes to our community. But that’s not all! The NYSDOT team also led two hands-on STEM activities: students worked together to build a tower using plastic cups and string (where they could only touch the string!) and constructed a bridge using paper! Scholars did an incredible job, and we may even have some future architects in the building. Thank you to the New York State DOT team for sparking curiosity and teamwork and helping our students see how their city is evolving!
Saturday, October 12th, 2024: Talented 4th-grade students from the Syracuse Academy of Science Catapult Club participated in the Catapult Competition at the Museum of Science & Technology. After weeks of designing, building, and refining their catapults, they were ready to test their creations in two key challenges: accuracy and distance. The event was filled with excitement as students launched their catapults, cheering each other on and learning from other teams. Their hard work, creativity, and team spirit truly stood out, earning them the Team Spirit Award! We are incredibly proud of their enthusiasm, teamwork, and passion for STEM. Congratulations to all our students for their fantastic efforts and achievements!
Saturday, October 12th, 2024: Syracuse Academy of Science High School proudly announces that two of our Robotics Team students, Gianna Ciciaralli and Ghader Alomeri, earned second place in the high school division at the MOST Catapult Challenge! The Robotics Team attended the competition with 6 teams and 12 students. Congratulations to all!
Saturday, October 12th, 2024: The Syracuse Academy of Science Middle School STEAM club took on an incredible challenge at The Museum of Science & Technology's Future Women in STEM program! Guided by Feldmeier engineers, our talented ladies crafted a table of sticks and candy dots. Their goal? Build the sturdiest structure and test its strength by loading it with bags of beans. We're thrilled to share that their hard work and creativity paid off—their table held an impressive 2914 grams, earning them second place! Congratulations to our future women in STEM for showcasing such amazing teamwork, problem-solving, and resilience! Keep building, keep dreaming, and keep pushing boundaries.
Thursday, October 10th, 2024: 4th-grade students from Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary braved the chilly, wet weather to embark on a fall adventure at Our Farm in Manlius. Despite the rain, our students' spirits remained high, turning a gray day into one filled with laughter, exploration, and memories! Our Atoms were immersed in classic fall activities from the moment they arrived. They eagerly participated in pumpkin picking, horseback riding, and petting the friendly goats. Our field trips are more than just fun—they’re opportunities for students to experience hands-on learning and build strong friendships outside the classroom. This adventure at Our Farm was no exception, and we’re proud of our 4th graders for embracing every part of the day with enthusiasm and resilience. Reflecting on this special day, we’re reminded of the joy of learning beyond the classroom, exploring new places, and making memories together. Rain or shine, there’s always fun to be had and new experiences to enjoy!
CSA Syracuse
Friday, October 25th, 2024: Each October, Citizenship & Science Academy of Syracuse Elementary celebrates our school’s incredible diversity during Heritage Week! Atoms proudly dress in clothing representing their culture, showcasing over 15 different backgrounds and languages. Celebrating diversity and culture in schools like ours is essential because it fosters an environment of inclusion, respect, and understanding among students. Heritage Week highlights our students' unique backgrounds, traditions, and languages and promotes empathy and curiosity. When students wear clothing from their culture, it’s a chance to share their identities openly, sparking conversations that broaden perspectives and challenge stereotypes. For many, Heritage Week provides a sense of pride and belonging, allowing students to see themselves and their stories reflected in their school community. Recognizing each culture enriches learning experiences, helping students and staff alike appreciate the vibrant tapestry that makes CSAS stronger, more united, and truly representative of the world beyond school walls. These connections encourage acceptance and celebrate the beauty of diversity, setting the foundation for a more inclusive future. This special day allows everyone to learn and appreciate each other's heritage, strengthening our community even more.
Saturday, October 12th, 2024: Our talented Citizenship & Science Academy of Syracuse Middle School Atoms competed in the Catapult Competition at the MOST and earned 2nd and 4th place finishes! After weeks of designing, building, and testing their catapults, they were ready to take on the challenge. The event was a fantastic opportunity for our Atoms to demonstrate their skills, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities. Congratulations to all the participants! We’re so proud of your hard work, dedication, and passion for STEM.

We had a fun competition for the best trunks in both the Teacher and Family categories!
