4. Friday, September 25th, 2020-While this year has been quite different for most, one thing remains the same. Syracuse Academy of Science strives to create an atmosphere that fosters student success and achievement. For our school this starts with our home visits. Something that is truly unique to our schools, teachers perform a minimum of twelve home visits each academic year. The goal of these home visits is to understand the student’s challenges and to create a better triad of parent-student-teacher relationships. 1. Tuesday, September 8th, 2020—Over the past few weeks we had the privilege of welcoming back our Atom for the 2020 - 2021 school year. The first day of school is one that brings so much joy and happiness to not only our teachers but to students and their families alike. While this year may look and feel a bit different we are embracing this new normal, and Utica Academy of Science Charter Schools are adhering to the New York State guidelines for health and safety. Students and families have the option for either hybrid or online learning. Elementary Atoms who are participating in hybrid learning meet two days a week, with three days of online learning. Middle school Atoms have a classroom size maxed at nine students per classroom. Mask wearing and social distancing are maintained. While the halls feel a bit empty in the high school, as teachers are back in the classrooms, we virtually welcomed back our eldest Atoms. High school students will be doing full-time remote learning, with the option of a one day in-person mentorship program for tutoring and or social emotional well being. We wish all of our Atoms the best success and luck this academic year. Many Atoms, One family.

2. Thursday, September 17th, 2020—What happens when you mix creativity and school spirit in 2020? You get none other than an amazing custom, one-of-a-kind face mask with the school logo! Look at that creativity. We are excited to see the love and care parents share for our school. Custom, cute and Atom to boot!

3. On Friday, September 25, 2020-Utica Academy of Science 6th-grade teachers wanted to show that they are unified and strong when it comes to teamwork and distance learning. Ms. Latray, Mrs. Cowen, and Mr. Farnach have worn a T-Shirt saying "" 6th grade strong, no matter the distance"". We believe that team spirit is needed more than ever during this unprecedented time. Thank you 6th-grade team.

4. Monday, October 5th, 2020—To say we appreciate our teachers is an understatement. From their creativity, to answering the call of duty and going above and beyond, to guiding, educating and teaching our Atoms, and so much more. Today on World Teachers Day, we celebrate all that you do! Thank you for all your hard work each and every day.

1. Friday, October 9th, 2020—Kindergarten Atoms get creative with their ‘Show Me Another Way’ math lesson. Keeping health, safety and social distancing in mind Atoms were able to not only show us their solution to their math problem to solve their equation but to use technology, as well. Students were able to use an iPad that interacted with their Smart Board to solve their equation and find a solution to their math problem.

2. Friday, October 16th, 2020—To say that our teachers have gone above and beyond the call of duty is an understatement. It’s their continuous hard work, positive attitude, dedication, creativity and so much more that they do not only for their students but for the Syracuse Academy of Science family. Today, we give our thanks and appreciation for all your continued hard work and dedication. It has been you that have kept us ‘a float’ for the past five plus weeks. We hope you enjoyed your tasty treat as a token of our appreciation and gratitude.

3. Saturday, October 17th, 2020—Full steam ahead and a round of applause for our very own Elementary Atoms, Leyla Hayali on winning this year’s CNY Steamboat Challenge brought to you by The MOST. On Saturday, October 17th STEM students competed in a ‘pop-pop’ or a ‘putt-putt’ boat engineering challenge. Students could compete individually or in groups of 2 or 3. Each team was tasked with not only designing their own boat, but also constructing it. Boats were to be miniature working steamboats powered by only a single tealight candle. In addition, students had to discuss their designs virtually to the judges and describe how their boat was constructed. Congratulations, Leyla for being this year’s Division I champion.

4. Wednesday, October 21st, 2020—It's not every day that you have the opportunity to virtually meet a musician let alone a composer. As you can imagine, we are going to toot our own horns when we share with excitement that Maryland based composer, Adrian Sims took the time out of his busy schedule to Zoom with the high school band and choir students.

5. Thursday, October 22nd, 2020—Kindergarten Atoms received a special Zoom visit from one of our favorite librarians, Ms. Quinn. Students learn about the community library, its vast resources and what it is like to be a librarian. Ms. Quinn also read to the Atoms one of her favorite stories.

6. Tuesday, October 27th, 2020—It’s hard to believe that we are already in the month of November, and Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary school recently hosted its October Student of the Month ceremony. 7. Tuesday, October 27th, 2020—Happy Fall y’all from our Elementary Atoms! To celebrate the beauty of the fall the Monday and Tuesday hybrid learning students participated in a Fall Festival. Complete with a dress down day, and fun fall activities such as: pumpkin painting, building an apple tower, creating a fall tree and constructing an apple volcano! It certainly was a gourd time for all.

8. Monday, November 2nd, 2020—It’s Election Day at Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary school. That is, a Classroom Representative Council election to elect this year’s ‘Class Rep’ to represent the 3rd and 4th grade hybrid cohort. Each classroom casted their ballots to elect one representative for their Class Rep. Their Class Rep will be responsible for meeting bi-weekly with Mrs. Wittchen, our school counselor, and will work together to find creative ways to instill SANY’s core values into everyday life.

9. Monday, November 2nd, 2020—Let the gourd times roll with Ms. Harnett’s Kindergarten class, as the students carved out the answers to the case of the Great Pumpkin Investigation. During this activity, Atoms became sleuths and determined not only how many seeds were in pumpkins but the seed size and shape, as well as, the height of a pumpkin. It was determined that the amount of seeds in each pumpkin varied but the overall pumpkin height on average was around 16 cubes!

  1. Friday, October 30th, 2020—Syracuse Academy of Science elementary teachers, faculty and staff took a walk on the wild side the eve of Halloween. Dressing as zoo animals, and principal Mrs. Miller as the zookeeper certainly led to a ‘zoo’per day for our Atoms as they celebrated the fall with various festivities.

  2. Tuesday, November 3rd, 2020- The inaugural season of the High School Varsity Boys Soccer season had many challenges. First and foremost a nationwide pandemic. While there were obstacles, this team never let that slow them down. Each game the student athletes played like champions. Highlighting one of our seniors, Daniel Pontello who had 111 career saves in a single season. Good luck to you for the rest of your College Career.

  3. On Tuesday, November 3rd we recognized our Seniors at Senior Night and thanked all who made this season not only safe but possible. At this time we would like to thank not only all of our student athletes but to our Athletic Director, Reginald Pickard, Head Coach Abu Bility and Assistant Coach Lossine Bility for making this season safe, possible and successful for everyone and their families. We look forward to the next soccer season.

  4. Monday, November 9th, 2020—When it is 75 degrees and sunny outside in November, in Syracuse, one must take advantage of this unseasonable weather! The fourth grade Monday/Tuesday Atoms did just that. From decorating the sidewalks with beautiful chalk drawings, reading their favorite stories, running and jumping in piles of leaves it was simply put, a beautiful day!

  5. Saturday, November 14th, 2020- Syracuse Academy of Science high school and elementary Atoms were busy at work this past weekend constructing, designing and winning divisions of this year’s CNY Bridges: Build ‘Em and Bust ‘Em Challenge hosted by the MOST. STEM students were tasked with engineering a balsawood bridge in teams or individually. Students would design and construct a truss bridge built entirely out of glue and balsawood. The day of the competition, participants would submit their bridge for a test of its efficiency rating, a measure of how many times its own weight the bridge could support before the structural failure. Below are the results of all of our participant Atoms!

High School - Division C

The Bridge Between Sisters: Team # 1957, Yakina Sika - 1st Place

The Golden Bridge: Team # 2000, Malaysia Green & Maya Plasa - 2nd Place

Toil & Trouble: Team # 1958, Theodore Simon - 3rd Place & Best Design Award

Elementary School

Congratulations to Leyla Hayali for her hard work, dedication and positive attitude! Although her bridge did not place in this year’s competition, she put in a tremendous amount of effort working hard after school drawing up blueprints and building her bridge. Great job, Leyla!

Congratulations to all of our participant Atoms, we are very proud of all your hard work, dedication and accomplishments!

  1. Wednesday, November 18th, 2020—Each year the Syracuse Academy of Science hosts Literacy Night which is a wonderful family event filled with reading and adventure. This year our annual event was held virtually during the week of November 9th. Hybrid Atoms received donated books that were able to keep and add to their own personal library at home. Students were encouraged to read stories with their families, as well as, explore the virtual reading room created by Mrs. Georgiadis, our reading specialist.

  2. Monday, November 23rd, 2020—This school year looks different for many, but one thing is certain, the teachers at Syracuse Academy of Science Middle School are putting their creativity to work coming up with clever and safe ways for students to connect with fellow classmates despite the distance. The student club advisors for the Leading Ladies group, Ms. Chapman & Ms. Catanzarite delivered special items for the students in their club. Items included bracelets, stickers and other goodies to play virtual games.

  3. Monday, November 30th, 2020—This time of year many are finding ways to give back to their community and to help those in need. For a recent assignment, Mrs. Nickless’ ELA class were tasked with coming up with a way on how they could ‘Be the Change YOU wish to see in the World. Seventh grade student Elijah Newsome decided to take this assignment one step further and implement his ideas into action.

For his project, Elijah Newsome created care packages for the homeless. Each care package was carefully hand selected and purchased with his own money! Each care package included the following items: face masks, hats, mittens, socks, hand warmers, Gatorade, cough drops, hand sanitizer and more. Words cannot describe how proud we are of Elijah and all that he has done to help those in need and to serve the greater Syracuse community. It’s students like Elijah that help make this world go round.

The Newsome family regularly gives back to the community through volunteering at the food pantry and making care packages such as these to help those who need it most.

SAS Citizenship

1. Monday, November 2nd, 2020—While this year has been quite different for most, one thing remains the same. Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship school strives to create an atmosphere that fosters student success and achievement. For our school this starts with our home visits. Something that is truly unique to our schools, teachers perform a minimum of twelve home visits each academic year. The goal of these home visits is to understand the student’s challenges and to create a better triad of parent-student-teacher relationships. Teachers at Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship school have been keeping safety first in mind when conducting their home visits and dropping of course material for their Atoms!

2. Thursday, November 5th, 2020—Can you think of a better thing to do in the fall than to read a good book with a friend? The 2nd grade Atoms practiced their reading skills with a reading budding earlier this month during their CKLA block. While maintaining social distance, each student took turns reading their story. This exercise allowed for Atoms to continue to work on their reading fluency. Keep up the great work, Atoms!

3. Friday, November 6th, 2020—The classic children’s story, Flat Stanley written by Jeff Brown was the inspiration behind the creative idea of two Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship teachers, Mrs. Kippa and Ms. Mays. Back in October, the two teachers were missing their students terribly and hearing about all their fun adventures they would have outside of school. To help alleviate this and to make the students feel a sense of connection, they sent their Atoms ‘Flat Teachers,’ with a note that read:

Hey There Students!

We’re missing you terribly and thought there maybe some adventures you could share with us. Invite the ‘Flat Teachers’ to join you for your daily routines, like when you play outside, or need a break from your screens. I wish we could be together and we could give you a hug or a high five. But these ‘Flat Teachers’ will have to do for the meantime. Know wherever you go and wherever you play, we will always be your teachers no matter how far away.

4. Tuesday, November 10th, 2020—Hard work. Critical Thinking. Teamwork and creativity are just some of what it takes to engineer an incredibly sturdy truss bridge. Atoms in Mr. Duclos 4th grade class participated in the MOST’s annual CNY Bridges: Build ‘Em and Bust ‘Em challenge. STEM students would design and construct a truss bridge built entirely out of glue and balsawood. Below are the results from their competition.

1st Place: Cedric Warren

2nd Place: Rihaj Lamichhaney

3rd Place: KeiMarion Everson & Branii Hall

4th Place: London Smith and Briella Bonilla

Congratulations to all of our participant Atoms, we are very proud of all your hard work, dedication and accomplishments!

5. Thursday, November 12th, 2020—It was only a matter of time before the first grade Atoms in room 1C would suddenly all be in KAHOOTS! By Kahoots, we certainly mean a program that would allow the Atoms to practice their listening and learning skills from their CKLA block. In the program students would solve challenging problems using their listening skills. Keep up the great work, Atoms.

6. Friday, November 13th, 2020—When it is sunny and warm in November in Syracuse, one must try and capture this window of opportunity. And that is exactly what the Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship Atoms did the week of November 9th! This unseasonably warm weather allowed for the teachers to conduct some of their lessons outside and the Atoms were able to soak in the warmth of the sun. A little fun in the sun before the snow really starts to fly!

7. Friday, November 13th, 2020—Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship Atoms receive awards fit for kings and queens for all of their ‘Royally Great Work’ they achieved during the first quarter. Teachers mailed the awards to their students and recognized them for their hard work both online and in the classroom. Keep up the great efforts, Atoms.

8. Friday, November 13th, 2020—As the quarter is coming to an end we would like to take this time to recognize one of our many stellar Atoms. This Atom not only comes to school with a positive, optimistic attitude, but has an unbridled passion for learning. Devis tries his best every day and keeps an open mind. We are proud to have Devis as one of our Atoms! Keep up the great work, Devis.

9. Monday, November 16th, 2020—This time of year there is so much to be thankful and grateful for in life. In collaboration with our proud partner, the Positivity Project students, faculty, and staff took time this week to focus on the character trait, gratitude. Atoms reflected on what things, people, items and more are we most grateful for, and wrote them on the school’s Gratitude Tree! We are grateful for all of our students, faculty, teachers, staff and community.

10. Thursday, November 19th, 2020—Many of the teachers, faculty and staff at Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship school have gone above and beyond the call of duty this year. We would like to highlight and give thanks to one teacher in particular, Ms. O’Conner. Many of you might know that Ms. O’Conner is our ENL teacher, but what you might not be aware of is how she has helped us continue to build success, one Atom at a time. Ms. O’Conner works behind the scenes helping ensure that our students are successful. From supporting our teachers and students to creating resources for the Atoms so they too can access content wherever their classroom may be. And some days, if not most, it’s Ms. O’Conner’s great sense of humor, positive can-do attitude that radiates when you are around her. Thank you, Ms. O’Conner for all that you have done, and continue to do for our students, faculty and staff.

11. Friday, November 20th, 2020—Does anyone else have the famous Jeopardy theme song playing in their head now? If not get ready for your next clue. The answer is - What mathematicians used perseverance and critical thinking to show their work while playing a Jeopardy review game for their upcoming Math exam?

Who are, the students in room 4C!

What a creative idea to prepare for an upcoming exam! Keep up the great work, Atoms.

12. Friday, November 20th, 2020—It is no secret that the Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship school teachers love, appreciate and care for their students. With families opting for both types of learning models - online and hybrid, it at times is no easy task to create a sense of community inside the classroom. Leave it to the creativity of the teachers in room 1B, Mrs. Kipp and Ms. Mays for thinking outside the box and mailing their students friendship bracelets to let them know they were thinking of them.

13. Friday, November 20th, 2020—Miss Hence’s Kindergarten class thinks outside the box for their math class! Students have recently been practicing, learning and exploring geometric shapes. For one of their activities, students had an opportunity for hands-on learning by creating shapes using a variety of materials.

    1. Wednesday, November 4th, 2020—Elementary Atoms and pizza - it’s a perfect match! On one fine Wacky Wednesday, Atoms became the master chefs in their kitchens and created their signature dish, pizza. Without using pizza dough students successfully crafted personal pan pizza using bread or an English Muffin. The results of course, delicious and extra cheesy! Atoms shared their dish and had lunch with their classmates over Zoom.

    2. Tuesday, November 10th, 2020—When it is 75 degrees and sunny outside in November, in Central New York, one must take advantage of this unseasonable weather! Ms. Fallone’s middle school Atoms did just that! Students enjoyed a nature walk, stretched their legs and soaked in the sun’s rays. Simply put, it was a beautiful day!

    3. Saturday, November 14th, 2020- Utica Academy of Science Middle School Atoms, Hamza and Gideon teamed up this past weekend constructing, designing and winning 3rd place and Best Design in Category 2 (7th and 8th Grade) at the annual CNY Bridges: Build ‘Em and Bust ‘Em Challenge hosted by the MOST.

STEM students were tasked with engineering a balsawood bridge in teams or individually. Hamza and Gideon would design and construct a truss bridge built entirely out of glue and balsawood. The day of the competition, participants would submit their bridge for a test of its efficiency rating, a measure of how many times its own weight the bridge could support before the structural failure. Great job, Atoms!

    1. Thursday, November 17th, 2020—At the beginning of the school year the Utica Academy of Science Middle School Atoms each wrote down goals as to what they would like to achieve this school year. One of their many goals was to receive a high grade point average. It is no surprise that many of our students have already achieved that goal and will continue to reach it every marking period. Congratulations to all of our students, keep up the great work, Atoms!

    2. Friday, November 20th, 2020—Lights, Camera, Smile Atoms its picture day! Keeping health and safety in mind for all, Utica Academy of Science elementary school hosted a picture day for both its hybrid learning students, as well as its remote learning students.
