SAS Citizenship

1.    Friday, March 18th, 2022—We all may be familiar with the classic fairy tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears. But have you ever seen a twist on this story performed by the ever-so-talented Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school 1st-grade ENL students? Earlier this year, the Atoms practiced their reading and comprehension skills by reading the Goldilocks Reader's Theater Script. Students used class puppets to help retell the story to their fellow classmates. Keep up the great work, Atoms.

2.    Friday, April 22nd, 2022—Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school participated in the 'Music in Our School's month,' where it hosted a school-wide art competition with the theme, 'Music: The Sound of My Heart.' This art competition was open to all students, and the Atoms flexed their creative muscles! Thanks to our panel of esteemed judges (aka teachers and staff), winners were selected based on how many votes their art piece received. Keep up the great work, Atoms! Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this event possible.

3.    Friday, April 29th, 2022—Kindness is the new classy, as the Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school students are being recognized for their random acts of kindness throughout the year. Congratulations to Noa, Andiel, Shaniy, and Addey for receiving the Random Act of Kindness Award and two Kindness tickets. Way to put the 'I' in KIND, Atoms!

4.    Thursday, May 12th, 2022—Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school's 5th-grade students practiced their research, presentation, and listening skills in the 'Scholar-Hour.' Atoms selected one topic for this presentation project to present to their classmates and guest audience members. The presentation needed to answer three main guiding questions and fun facts about their chosen subject. While the Atoms were presenting, the audience members completed a form detailing their learning. The 'Scholar-Hour' was a fun exercise, project, and learning experience for all the students.

5.    Friday, May 20th, 2022—We promise to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, as the Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship 6th-grade students visited the U.S. District Court (Northern District of New York in Syracuse) to learn about the judicial system and career opportunities in the legal industry. During their visit, students toured the facility and met Honorable Wendy A. Kinsella, the United States Bankruptcy judge. Honorable Wendy Kinsella moderated the group's tour session and allowed the Atoms to visit her chambers.

6.    Wednesday, June 1st, 2022—To celebrate their year in Kindergarten, this future class of 2034 teamed up and collaborated on a storybook that will one day become a New York Times Best-Seller. Last month, students tested their teamwork skills when coming up with content for their storybook, 'Our Year in Kindergarten.' Each Atom was responsible for completing the sentence, 'my favorite part of kindergarten is...' We are excited to announce that the Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school kindergarteners are officially published, authors. Congratulations, Atoms; we are so proud of you and all you have accomplished.

7.    Thursday, June 2nd, 2022—Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school's 5th-grade students hosted a career fair, where each student answered this fundamental question - when I grow up, I want to be .....? Each Atom created informational presentations and brochures about the career they selected and dressed the part of their role. In addition, students learned how to tie a tie properly, complete a job application, create a resume, and participate in mock interviews with SANY administrators. The 5th-grade Atoms presented their careers to students in 3rd and 4th grade to help them learn about various professions and industries.

8.    Thursday, June 16th, 2022—Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school's 5th grade Project Based Learning students tested the laws of physics with an engineering activity, the Egg Drop Challenge. For this STEM activity, Atoms worked together to plan, build and execute an 'eggshell protection system' that would allow their eggs to withstand a fall from a great height. Thanks to the help of Mr. McGriff, the official 'egg launcher' who went up onto the roof of Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school to drop the eggs for the Atoms. All 5th-grade students were present for the egg launch to observe their experiment and cheer for the four teams. We are excited that all four teams had successful experiments, and none of the eggs broke during the drop/launch. Congratulations, Atoms!

9.    Sunday, June 19th, 2022—Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there—whether you're a dad or like a dad. Your love is the greatest and most precious gift in the world. In honor of Father's Day, we want to take this moment to wish all fathers a happy Father's Day. Thank you for all that you do in your Atoms' life. Happy Father's Day!

10. Wednesday, June 22nd, 2022—To celebrate all their hard work this year, Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school’s  4th-grade Atoms participated in a 'Fun Day.' To kick off Fun Day, Atoms participated in an outdoor Read-A-Thon where they selected their favorite book to read and spent time with their friends and fellow classmates. Following the Read-A-Thon, Atoms could rotate between a game room, dance party, craft activity, or movie and paint celebration. This Fun Day was the perfect way to conclude the school year and to celebrate all they have accomplished this year.

SAS

1.     Wednesday, December 14th, 2022: It's beginning to look a lot like snow! Syracuse Academy of Science Kindergarteners must have predicted this snowstorm because they have been working in class to create a background for a penguin! It's also the perfect activity to practice letters and lines. These atoms are learning that drawing snowflakes can be simple! An X and a plus sign combine to make a snowflake. Add the letter V on the end to dress it up!

2.          Tuesday, December 13th, 2022: A, B, C, easy as 1, 2, 3. SAS Elementary third-grade Atoms participated in a Spelling Bee! This Atom's classroom teachers and art teacher came out to support her and see her spectacular work! Way to go!

12.       Friday, December 2nd, 2022: Citizenship & Science Academy of Syracuse is grieving a tragic loss. On Tuesday, November 22nd, Nezamiyah White unexpectedly passed away in a house fire. Nezamiyah was a sweet student who always had a smile on her face. Her smile was infectious and she radiated positivity wherever she went. Nezamiyah worked hard in school, earning many awards throughout her time at Citizenship. She was a great friend to all and a leader in her class. One of Nezamiyah's passions was gymnastics. At recess it was a guarantee Nezamiyah would be practicing her tumbling and cartwheels with her friends. She wanted to be a gymnastics coach when she grew up. Nezamiyah enjoyed reading and adored art. We can’t begin to imagine the pain her family is experiencing with this tragic loss. Please join us for a spaghetti dinner fundraiser to benefit the family of Nezamiyah White on Saturday, December 17th at the Syracuse Academy of Science high school cafeteria. Stop by anytime from 5 to 9 pm for dine in or take out. Dinners are $10 each and all proceeds will go to Nezamiyah’s family. Thank you for coming together to help out as a community. We are many atoms, one family.

13.       Friday, December 2nd, 2022: Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school teacher Ms. Cahalan hosts a girls' group that meets on Fridays at the end of the day. The girls talk about skills they can use to resolve social conflict healthily while having fun building with legos. The meetings are a positive experience for our Atoms and Ms. Cahalan!

14.       Wednesday, November 30th, 2022: As part of our Culturally Responsive Teachings, throughout November, Syracuse Academy of Science elementary Atoms worked on a family project: Family Traditions. Every family has unique traditions held near and dear to their hearts. They are part of what makes each family special and unique. Families were encouraged to talk about beloved traditions within their homes. Following this conversation, we asked families to help their students draw and write out the four steps of a family tradition to share with our community. Family traditions ranged from holiday traditions, birthdays, family vacations, and the first day of school rituals. We loved getting a glimpse into our students' families and home lives. Stay tuned for December's family project!

15.       Wednesday, November 30th, 2022: Fourth Graders at Syracuse Academy of Science learned all about Central New York’s history during a field trip to the Onondaga Historical Association. Atoms received a guided tour of the museum and watched a sound and light show, all while learning about important historical events like Syracuse’s role in the underground railroad. The museum displayed important artifacts from history for the students to see. They even got to listen to music from a record player! Thank you to the OHA for hosting us. It was a very informative trip for our students.

16.       Wednesday, November 30th, 2022: Do you have a favorite family recipe? Maybe it's your grandma's gooey chocolate chip cookies or your mom's chicken noodle soup. 5th, 6th, and 7th graders are cooking up something exciting at Syracuse Academy of Science middle school! Atoms shared their family's favorite recipes and maybe even some secret recipes with our Student Council members, who created a book to share with everyone. Atoms can purchase Recipe Books for $5 (cash only). Students can buy them in homeroom or by seeing Ms. Chapman.

17.       Tuesday, November 22nd, 2022: 7th-grade middle school students exercised their presentation and teamwork skills with the What’s in the Room “sales pitch.” Students were given 20 minutes to choose an item in the room and brainstorm how to sell it to the judges (AKA Mrs. Nickless, Mr. Jan, and Ms. Obrist). Then they had to create a flier including the name of the product, logo/slogan, how much they were selling the item for, and where they could sell it. Students wowed the judges with colorful fliers, website designs, and even a commercial!

18.       Saturday, November 20th, 2022: Syracuse Academy of Science is proud to announce that 25 student artworks were selected for display during the 74th annual New York State Art Teachers Association Conference. Students also had a blast with laser tag and braving the multi-level ropes course.

21.       Thursday, November 17th, 2022: Second graders at Syracuse Academy of Science had a guest speaker from OCRRA teach them how recycling works in Onondaga county. Atoms watched a short video on how recyclables are separated, then showed examples of items to recycle or throw away. It’s important to teach children about sustainability. It’s a skill they will keep with them for the rest of their lives.

22.       Wednesday, November 16th, 2022: The middle school robotics team is gearing up for this year’s Vex IQ competitions. This activity aligned perfectly with Election Day! Great work showing democracy in action, second graders!

30.       Friday, November 4th, 2022: We’ve all heard the saying “hard work pays off.” Head soccer coach, Mr. Bility, couldn’t agree more. Since August, when Syracuse Academy of Science finally got its own soccer field, he knew it was time to get to work. The team had been anxiously waiting to step on that field since Covid-19 started. Fast forward to 2022, the SAS Atoms were able to compete in their first official season as a school team. The season had many ups and downs, but the team competed and fought in every game until the last whistle. Even coaches from other schools saw this hard work in our student-athletes and wanted to recognize them.

Four of our student-athletes were nominated by Coach Bility and other coaches to the OHSL top players of the season. Congratulations to the following recipients:

Jamal Abdirahman: First Team All Patriots League

Taha Hayali: First Team All Patriots League

Ismael Colon Arencibia: Second Team All Patriots League
