Friday, April 8th, 2022—Syracuse Academy of Science high school ‘future scientists,’ Miguel Mathis and Makayla McMullen receive an opportunity of a lifetime when their project about Microbial Fuel Cells was the only one selected to attend and present their research at the CNY Energy Symposium. Congratulations, Miguel and Makayla, on being selected to participate in the CNY Energy Symposium. This is an incredible honor, and we are all very proud of you!
Monday, May 9th, 2022—Out of 1,748 participants, Syracuse Academy of Science high school student Miguel Mathis took home 3rd place, and a $1,000 award from the Arconic Foundation for innovation in sustainable design or material science at Society for Science's Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) held in Atlanta, Georgia! Miguel's project was about Microbial Fuel Cells and how we can build them sustainably to generate electricity from bacteria and treat wastewater. Throughout ISEF, Miguel met and networked with companies and scientists worldwide. Without the support, encouragement, and drive to work hard from family, friends, teachers, and lab partner Makayla McMullen, this wouldn't be possible. Congratulations, Miguel; we are very proud of you and all you have accomplished!
Friday, May 20th, 2022—Dancing, Fashion, Art, Music, International Cuisine, and more as Syracuse Academy of Science high school embraced cultures worldwide at its 2022 Cultural Fair. Colorfully decorated with artwork from the Atoms, tri-fold boards from countries all around the world, and music filled the gymnasium as students proudly shared authentic cuisine that represented their countries' cultures and traditions. Throughout the Cultural Fair, Atoms put on performances of dancing, singing, and music. Students sang songs in Spanish, performed a Bachata dance, and played the steel drums. No Culture Fair is complete without a fashion show, of course! Students showcased traditional clothing native to their countries' cultures and traditions. Thank you to everyone who helped make this event possible and to the students who donated their time and talent to teach us about their families' cultures and traditions. We are many Atoms, One Family. Please click here to visit our Facebook page to view additional pictures from Syracuse Academy of Science high school's Cultural Fair event.
Monday, May 23rd, 2022—Syracuse Academy of Science high school hosted its annual Spring Concert and Art Show in May. Throughout the event, guests watched an incredible performance from the high school choir, who sang songs in three languages with a 'flower' spring theme and collaborated with the band to perform Bill Withers' hit song, 'Lean on Me.' In addition to the choir and band performance, the Syracuse Academy of Science high school band students received awards for the most improved, leadership, and best overall musician. Guests also had an opportunity to view the impressive artistic skills of students in grades 8th -12th. The art pieces ranged from independent study projects to printmaking. We want to thank Wegmans for supporting the arts and for donating refreshments for guests to enjoy following the concert.
Tuesday, May 31st, 2022—As the Syracuse Academy of Science high school students from the Class of 2022 prepare for that infamous walk to receive their diplomas, they first take a short walk to where it all started: elementary school. The graduating seniors from the Class of 2022 donned their caps and gowns and walked through Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school halls for the Atoms in grades K-4 to see and cheer them on. This time-honored tradition allows our Elementary Atoms to see what they can strive for and look forward to. It is also a fun and sweet reminder for our Seniors to see where it all started. To celebrate, elementary school teachers and students decorated and made signs to congratulate the seniors on their hard work and accomplishments. There was a bittersweet moment when the Dean of Elementary, Meghan Miller, took a picture with the seniors she taught in her 3rd-grade class! We wish our Class of 2022 the best of luck with their upcoming graduation and future endeavors!
Wednesday, June 1st, 2022—Congratulations to Syracuse Academy of Science high school senior Makai Reed, who officially signed and committed to play basketball with the Bryant and Stratton College Bobcats! On behalf of Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School and the entire coaching and academic staff at Syracuse Academy of Science high school, we want to congratulate Makai and his family on this incredible accomplishment. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
Tuesday, June 2nd, 2022—Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school students' creativity was on full display during their annual Art Show. This year's art gallery contained many original pieces from the talented works of Ms. A-B's students. Included in the gallery were drawings, paintings, pottery, and much more. This year's art gallery also allowed its patrons to interact with the exhibit by participating in hands-on, creative activities. These activities include coloring a giant sheet of paper, a paint by colors station, and making their own Atoms Spinner. In addition to this exhibit, guests were encouraged to visit the 'silly photo station' to commemorate this moment. We want to thank all the teachers, faculty, and staff who helped make this event possible and our fabulous art patrons (aka parents, families, and friends) for their continuous support throughout the years.
Friday, June 3rd, 2022—As the Regents Exams kick off today, the Syracuse Academy of Science high school students were busy preparing, studying, and taking much-needed 'brain break,' or study break. As a stress relief from all the 'exam cramming' students in grades, 8 -11th participated in an Uno tournament. Atoms played in a bracket system where the first two winners from each of the four groups advanced to the next round. These eight students would then play three final games with prizes awarded to students who placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Congratulations to the following Uno tournament winners. Thank you to everyone who helped make this tournament possible! We wish all of our students the best of luck on their Regents Exams. You got this, Atoms!
Friday, June 10th, 2022—It's the last month of school, and there is only one thing on the minds of the 1st and 2nd-Grade Atoms at Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school .... ice cream! Okay, there may be more than just one thing on their mind, but to celebrate all their hard work this academic year, the students embarked on a walking field trip to Syracuse's favorite ice cream shops, Gannon's Ice Cream and Arctic Island. Atoms practiced their manners during their visit when ordering their favorite ice cream flavors. Thank you to Gannon's and Arctic Island for some delicious sweet treats!
Sunday, June 12th, 2022—Before the school year came to a close, the Syracuse Academy of Science high school Congressional Awards students embarked on a few more adventures. Many students visited the Big Apple (specifically, Yonkers and various locations in and around New York City), New Jersey, and the Adirondacks. These trips allowed the students to complete their Congressional Awards Expedition/Exploration requirement - which entails students must spend a minimum of three nights outside of their city. When visiting New York City, Mr. Yemen's students visited many iconic locations such as Times Square, the Brooklyn Bridge, and China Town. We all know that no trip to New York City is complete without experiencing a ride on the subway - a first for many of the students. This metropolitan adventure was a great personal development opportunity that allowed the students to practice their self-motivation skills. The students who attended this trip will be applying for their gold certificate at the end of the year. Ms. Jamison's group of Congressional Award students visited Yonkers for a Juneteenth celebration. During their visit, students were immersed in a panel discussion, had an opportunity to attend a concert by the waterfront, and visited a museum. The final location in this tri-state Congressional Awards visits was Long Beach Island, New Jersey. While the weather didn't cooperate for a portion of the trip, this never slowed down the Atoms. Students visited the ocean (a first for many students), walked on the iconic Boardwalk, and spent quality time with one another in their rental house. Waking up to the sound of the ocean was peaceful, serene, and the perfect way to relax and recharge before the Regents Exams. Finally, Ms. Hamill's 9th-grade Congressional Award students visited the Adirondacks for a week! This rural trip allowed the Atoms to become one with nature as there was little to no cell phone service. During their visit to the Adirondacks, Atoms explored the Old Forge Public Beach, where they observed the beautiful scenery, learned navigation skills, and how to build a fire. No campfire is ever complete without s'mores. These Congressional Awards expedition/exploration trips are an incredible experience for the students to get out of their 'comfort zone' and explore the world around them, try and learn new things and experiences. Keep up the great work, Atoms!
Wednesday, June 15th, 2022—It was a 'ball in' day at Syracuse Academy of Science elementary and middle school, as Syracuse Academy of Science high school alumni and Syracuse University basketball guard Syrmir Torrence visited his alma mater. Tuesday, May 24th, 2022—Utica Academy of Science elementary school’s Kindergarten Atoms discover and explore the Animal Kingdom on a field trip to the Fort Rickey Discovery Zoo. During their visit, students had an opportunity to interact and get up close to pet and feed animals from all over the world. A couple of their field trip highlights include holding on to a baby goat, having animals eat right out of the palm of their hands, and for the bravest Atoms having a snake rest ever so gently on top of their head. This action-packed day was filled with many exotic memories that the students will cherish forever.
Thursday, May 26th, 2022—Utica Academy of Science elementary school's 6th-grade Atoms discovered, learned, and played during a field trip to the Museum of Science and Technology (MOST). This hands-on, minds-on day allowed the Atoms to apply what they learned in the classroom with the various interactive exhibits, science experiments, and much more. Some topics the students learned about at the MOST include paleontology, plate tectonics, biology, and aeronautics. Students even put their STEM skills into action by participating in Build. With multiple building blocks of all shapes and sizes, Atoms could pretend they were architects, civil engineers, and designers through sensory play. Atoms also dug deep into the Earth's history by exploring the Earth Science Discovery Cave. Students learned about plate tectonics, cave formation, climate change, and the geologic history of New York state. One can't simply learn about Earth's history without first learning (and traveling back in time) to the age of the dinosaurs. Students visited the Dino Zone, where they saw lifelike dinosaurs created in collaboration with paleontologists that are displayed in scenes depicting what life was like on Earth over 65 million years ago. This exhibit was a favorite for many students and an excellent spot for a few photo ops and selfies! Not to be outdone, students learned about Aerospace engineering, physics, and space science when visiting the Lockheed Martin Flight & Space exhibit ... which includes a zero-gravity jumper! Needless to say, this field trip to the MOST was out of this world; in fact, many students fell asleep on the bus ride home. Thank you to the MOST for such a memorable and remarkable experience!

We appreciate your assistance coordinating and leading the students in various soccer activities and drills.
Friday, June 10th, 2022—We may have some future spelunkers here, as Utica Academy of Science elementary school's 4th-grade Atoms said yes to keeping adventure and exploration alive when visiting the Howe Caverns. Their adventure began when they stepped into an elevator that took them 156 feet below the Earth's surface to a prehistoric destination 6 million years in the making. In this prehistoric cavern, stalagmites and stalactites filled the area. While many might think that being that far below the Earth's surface would be chilly, at Howe Caverns, it was constant 52 degrees Fahrenheit and 75% humidity year-round. This geological adventure reminded the students just how deep below the Earth's surface they were when hearing every sound echo off the walls and ceilings. Atoms learned about the magnificent limestone and flowstone and conservation efforts to preserve this prehistoric location for future generations to enjoy. The Howe Caverns is New York State's 2nd most visited Natural Attraction and a favorite field trip location amongst the Atoms.

SAS
Friday, November 11th, 2022: “This nation will remain the land of the free only as long as it is home of the brave.”-- Elmer Davis. School is closed today in observance of Veterans Day. Veterans Day is a federal holiday honoring military veterans in the United States. If you know a loved one who served in the military, say a special thank you to them today! Classes will resume on Monday, November 14th.
Thursday, November 10th, 2022: Scholars in Mrs. Bloss' Second Grade Class at Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary worked hard to write letters to special Veterans in their lives and the community. The children explored what it means to be a Veteran and the rights they defended when honoring our country. We would also like to give a special shout-out to two Veterans in particular that the children wrote to that served overseas and now serve as police officers in the Syracuse Community; Officer DiPuccio and Officer Bougourd. Thank you for your service. Happy Veterans Day!
Thursday, November 10th, 2022: “What choices will you make to lead to the opportunities you want in life?” Onondaga Community College President Dr. Warren Hilton, and Vice President of Enrollment Management Sarah Gaffney, addressed Syracuse Academy of Science sophomores and juniors. Dr. Warren discussed the benefits of attending a two-year college, the scholarships and courses OCC offers, and highlighted the importance of taking college credits while still in high school. It was a very beneficial discussion for our school community.
Wednesday, November 9th, 2022: “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies… The man who never reads lives only once.” Families from Syracuse Academy of Science came out to enjoy literacy night! Students and their families participated in carnival-themed reading and writing activities, including bowling pins, ring toss, concession stand writing, circus animal matching, and more. We also had community members, including Empower FCU, Syracuse Fire Department, Help Me Grow Onondaga, Betts Branch Public Library, and Syracuse Police Department, along with information from Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. We love partnering with our community to build even stronger readers! Thank you to all who came out to support our Literacy Night event!
Tuesday, November 8th, 2022: There is no school today for Superintendents Day! All staff must still report. Enjoy the day off, Atoms!
Friday, November 4th, 2022: A small act of kindness goes a long way! Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary Students in Ms. Cahalan’s “Kind Kiddos” social-emotional learning Lunch Bunch group passed out roses to teachers as their weekly act of kindness. These students spent the last two weeks brainstorming various acts of kindness that they can lead throughout the school year to create an overall positive school climate. They decided to start by giving “A beautiful rose to a beautiful teacher." Stay tuned for more Lunch Bunch posts as Ms. Cahalan works to bring students together each day during lunch!
Saturday, November 5th, 2022: Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary Atoms also competed in the CNY Bridge Building competition at the MOST. Our team had to endure strict regulations to qualify for the competition. Their bridges were checked by inspectors, ensuring each was the correct height, width, and weight. Once they qualified, they got to wear a special badge that told individuals they were competing. Our team then waited until it was our time to test the bridges. The process started with their bridge being placed on a podium with a weight resting on the bottom. Under their bridge was a chain attached to the weight and a lever. Once the chain was connected, the bridge tester pushed on the lever. The harder they pushed, the more weight was placed on the bridge. Once the bridge reached its max capacity of weight, it snapped. Overall, it was a fun experience, and the students worked hard on their bridges. Good work, team! You all should be proud of your achievements and the efforts you put forth for this competition. A big thank you to the families that took time out of their morning to attend their child’s competition. Without you, it would not have been possible.
Saturday, November 5th, 2022: The Syracuse Academy of Science robotics team attended the CNY Bridge building competition at the MOST. Eight teams from SAS joined in the competition and took home 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place in the high school division and 3rd place in middle school division. Students had to design and construct a balsa wood bridge to measure efficiency; which is a measure of how many times its own weight the bridge can support before structural failure.
Congratulations to the following students in the senior division:
1st Place: Taha Hayali and Halis Mutlu
2nd Place: Samara Hurtado and Joshua Morales
3rd Place: Yakina Sika-Amoah and Grace O’Neill
4th Place: Andre McClain and Migual Mathis
Congratulations to the students in the junior division:
3rd Place: Lester Gonzales, Aamiran Ridha and Jok Jok.
It’s time to spotlight another amazing teacher at Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary! Meet Mrs. Tracy! She has been with SAS for seven years as a 3rd-grade teacher and has been a teacher since 2007! She went to college at the State University of New York at Oswego. Mrs. Tracy lives with her husband, three children, and a puppy named Bella. Mrs. Tracy is passionate about teaching and watching her students grow and learn new things daily. She enjoys boating with her family and is most inspired by her father. Thank you, Mrs. Tracy, for being an integral part of the SAS Elementary School team!
November 3rd & 4th, 2022: Spirit week may be over for Syracuse Academy of Science atoms, but we can’t forget about the last two days! Day four was sweatpants day where students got to ditch their uniforms for comfy clothes! And the last day was college shirt day. Thank you to everyone who participated in #spiritweek. We’re already looking forward to next year!
Wednesday, November 2nd, 2022: Syracuse Academy of Science High Schoolers were seeing double! Day three of spirit week was twin day. Whether students dressed to look like their best friend, classmate, or teacher, we saw some very creative outfits!
Tuesday, November 1st, 2022: It’s #SpiritWeek here at Syracuse Academy of Science High School and these Atoms prove there is no “I” in team by showing support for their favorite sports team! Day two of spirit week is Fandom day. These are just a few of the students sporting their favorite gear.
Monday, October 31st, 2022: It was just a bunch of hocus pocus in the halls of Syracuse Academy of Science. These high-schoolers had a spook-tacular time celebrating the first day of spirit week with a fall festival, proving you’re never too old to dress up for Halloween. We hope everyone has a safe and happy Halloween!
Why are ghosts so bad at telling lies? Because you can see right through them! There weren’t many ghosts at Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School’s Fall festival costume parade, but there were plenty of princesses! That’s because the theme of this year’s parade was Walt Disney with Disney characters! Staff, students, and even some parents dressed up in costumes for an outdoor parade around the playground, followed by some fall crafts and activities in classrooms. We hope everyone had a safe and happy Halloween!
Saturday, October 29th, 2022: Mr. Stowe and Mr. Yaman took congressional award students to Ithaca, where they visited Ithaca Falls and Robert Truman State Park. Regular expeditions are just one part of what it takes to be a congressional award candidate on top of community service, physical fitness, and personal development. It was a beautiful day for our students to work toward their goals and achieve success together.
Friday, October 28th, 2022: Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School's character trait for October was Trustworthiness. To be trustworthy means to be reliable, keep promises, and do what you say you will do. Trustworthiness also means telling the truth and being honest with words and actions, even when it may be difficult. Congratulations to Mrs. Eno, Ms. Pikowski, and all of our students of the month for being so Trustworthy!
Friday, October 28th, 2022: Representatives from Micron visited Syracuse Academy of Science High School. Senior vice president and Chief People Officer April Arnzen, and Head of Social Impact for Micron Technology Robert Simmons spoke with a large group of our students about why Micron chose to build a facility in Clay and the type of job opportunities they offer. This was the first meeting Micron had with students in Central New York. There were even a couple of business cards passed out to students. Who knows, some atoms may be working for Micron in the future!
Thursday, October 27th, 2022: 3rd and 4th grade Syracuse Academy of Science Atoms had the once-in-a-lifetime experience of watching President Joe Biden’s convoy on their way up to Onondaga Community College! Students made signs and posters and waved as the cars drove by. The President traveled to Syracuse for Micron’s $100 billion investment in CNY. Atoms were extremely lucky to witness this extraordinary moment in history!
Monday, October 24th, 2022: Syracuse Academy of Science Second Grade Atoms celebrated the start of Diwali. Students practiced meditating, made paper lanterns, and a Rangoli craft to celebrate this festival of lights. Diwali is a five-day religious festival and one of the most important festivals within Hinduism. 2nd Grade had just finished their Ancient Asian Civilizations unit, which lined up nicely with Diwali.
Monday, October 24th, 2022: “Family trees need strong branches and deep roots.” As part of our efforts to increase Culturally Responsive Teaching, Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School will encourage families to participate in various Family Projects during the school year. Students and families were tasked with creating a Family Tree together in October. Where we come from and who encompasses our families are an important part of who we are, and a family tree project allows students to show off their backgrounds. These are just a small sample of some of the beautiful and thought-out family trees that came into school. Thank you to all the parents, guardians, and family members that helped our scholars make this first Family Project a great success!
Monday, October 24th, 2022: Dean of Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary school Meghan Miller visited classroom 2-A for a read-aloud! Mrs. Miller is reading through the "There Was An Old Lady" series and started with "There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves." Students participated by reading their line: "perhaps she'll sneeze!" Thank you, Mrs. Miller, for reading with our second graders!
Sunday, October 16th, 2022: 30 Students in Mr. Yaman's Turkish Class visited the Turkish Festival in Washington DC. These Syracuse Academy of Science atoms had a chance to practice their Turkish language skills, and learn Turkish culture in an authentic setting. They also visited some of the National landmarks such as; the Lincoln Monument, Washington Monument, World War II monument, and US Capitol.
Saturday, October 15th, 2022: Four of our all-star Syracuse Academy of Science seniors played their final regular-season soccer game! Congratulations to Jose Santana, Jamal Abdirahman, Nischal Kharel, and Taha Hayali. Thank you for your hard work and dedication over the last four years. However, we’re not done quite yet. The next step for the team is the Sectionals. Good luck, and go Atoms!
Saturday, October 15th, 2022: The Syracuse Academy of Science Robotics team did it again! Five teams competed in the CNY Steamboat Challenge tournament presented by the MOST. For this competition, students had to design and construct a miniature working steamboat powered by a single tealight candle. Teams were judged based on five categories: fastest race time, boat design, STEM knowledge, creativity, and teamwork. Syracuse Academy of Science had one group of middle schoolers in division 2 and received second place. The other teams were made up of high schoolers in division 3 and received first, second, third, and fourth place.
Congratulations to the following students for placing in this year's CNY Steamboat Competition:
1st Place in High School Category: Samara Hurtado, Mickayla Pagan, and Joshua Morales
2nd Place in High School Category: Halis Mutlu and Taha Hayali
3rd Place in High School Category: Migual Mathis and Andre McClain

2nd Place in Middle School Category: Aamiran Ridha, Lester Gonzalez, and Jok Jok
Congratulations to all our winners!
Friday, October 14th, 2022: Syracuse Academy of Science is paving the road to success for our Atoms; choosing which college to go to can be a very grueling and challenging process. So, we are bringing representatives from Colleges and universities into our schools to talk to students. Le Moyne College and Boston University met with students on October 14th. We had excellent conversations about the specifics of each school and navigating college admissions. We hope this helped ease some of the anxiety for our students. Be on the lookout for more visits from colleges soon!
Friday, October 14th, 2022: Let's get rid of these Monday afternoon blues by remembering a fun Friday morning! Syracuse Academy of Science 4th graders took a walk on a sunny, cool morning to Webster's Duck Pond. Atoms were able to feed ducks and take in the beautiful scenery. Students learned about the geography that makes up the pond and its importance for the ecosystems surrounding the duck pond. Students also observed different species of ducks and learned how these birds would not migrate due to the pond not entirely freezing over, which allows the birds to stay. These lucky ducks had a blast enjoying some exercise and seeing nature outside the classroom!
Wednesday, October 12th, 2022: Syracuse Academy of Science Third graders weren’t monkeying around on their first field trip of the school year. They took their knowledge from the classroom on animal classification to the Rosamond Gifford Zoo. Students became taxonomists for the day and classified various animals including amphibians, mammals, birds, fish, and reptiles. Students were thrilled to get outside and use their learning in an engaging, hands-on way!
Wednesday, October 12th, 2022: During fire safety week, Syracuse Academy of Science had the pleasure of having firefighter Gilbert talk to the second graders. Firefighter Gilbert explored fire safety and procedures with the children in case of an emergency. He read the book "No Dragons for Tea" and allowed the atoms to see up close the fire safety equipment firefighters use daily. Mr. Gilbert has a child in second grade, so he was excited to share his profession and knowledge with atoms of the same age! Thank you, Mr. Gilbert, for being an excellent guest speaker.
Tuesday, October 11th, 2022: Take a peek inside Ms. A-B's Kindergarten Art Class! Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School Kindergarteners did some painting and learned that two overlapping colors make a new color. For this lesson, students were shown how red and yellow polka dots overlap to make orange! These atoms had fun experimenting with paint to create their masterpieces!
Thursday October 6th, 2022: Twelve exceptional 4th graders were selected to share a special breakfast with our SANY Superintendent, Dr. Tolga Hayali. Students joined Dr. Hayali and Dean, Mrs. Miller, in the cafeteria for waffles, turkey bacon, fresh fruit, milk, and juice. Dr. Hayali and our 4th graders discussed why they were chosen to represent their grade, their goals for the future, and what they would change in our school if they were the principal. Students were excited to be selected, and Dr. Hayali enjoyed spending time with these Atoms.
Thursday, October 6th, 2022: 13 Syracuse Academy of Science High School students were honored at a ceremony as they received congressional awards. These students have been participating in The Congressional Awards program since October 2021. Every Saturday, Mr. Yaman and Mr. Turgay’s students set aside a portion of their day to work on their Congressional Award requirements. On top of the hours they spend on their personal development and physical fitness, they serve their community and earn community service hours by volunteering their time at the Thrifty Shopper store in East Syracuse. These students visited multiple cities throughout their journeys, such as Boston, NYC, and Washington, DC. They camped in the Adirondacks, exploring their country by meeting the Congressional Award Expedition/Exploration requirement. Hard work pays off, and we are so proud of our scholars for meeting their goals and receiving this high honor from the United States Congress. Congratulations, Atoms!
What do you get if you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its diameter? A pumpkin pi! On Monday, October 3rd, Syracuse Academy of Science first graders didn't make any pumpkin pie, but they did get to visit Tim's Pumpkin patch. The farm in Marietta is a fall staple for families here in Central New York. Students took a tractor wagon ride, picked pumpkins, and enjoyed delicious cider and donuts. It was a gourd-tastic way to kick off October!
It's time to shine the spotlight on one of our outstanding teachers! Mr. Metz is a teacher at Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary school. He is originally from Ilion, New York. He graduated from SUNY Potsdam with a BA in History and Theatre and an MST in Childhood Education. Mr. Metz has been teaching in various roles for almost a decade. He has lived and worked in both New York and North Carolina. Theatre and sports are some of his favorite pastimes. He works a second job with the Syracuse Mets and is involved in Community Theatre. Mr. Metz enjoys attending SU Basketball and Football games and Syracuse Crunch Hockey. He is a fan of Disney and will never say no to a slice of pizza. His mom and dad most inspire Mr. Metz, and he must like to give positive feedback because his most used emoji is the thumbs-up emoji! This is Mr. Metz's first year with Syracuse Elementary, and we couldn't be happier to have him on our team. Thank you for all you do day in and day out, Mr. Metz!
Friday, September 30th, 2022: Syracuse Academy of Science 4th-grade students experienced life outside the classroom! These adventurous Atoms explored Beaver Lake Nature Center in Baldwinsville. Students took guided tours of the bog and woods and learned about different species of trees and animals that live in the environment, and they even got to see some cranberries growing! As these students had just wrapped up their ecology unit, they asked some very informed questions and were able to apply what they learned to a real-world environment.
Friday, September 30th, 2022: All three kindergarten classes enjoyed their first walking field trip to Syracuse fire station 18. During the field trip, students learned about fire safety and how to keep each other and themselves safe from harm. While we were there, students enjoyed watching the firefighters come down the fire pole, suit up in their protective gear, and they even got to sit in the fire truck! Our Atoms had a great time and couldn’t wait to share what they learned with their families! Thank you, Station 18, for taking the time to have us visit!

Please join us in celebrating Ms. Ansbrow, Ms. Cahalan, and all our students of the month for being Responsible! Way to go, Atoms!
Thursday, September 29th, 2022: It's hard to believe it's already October! It feels like the first day of school was just yesterday! Syracuse Academy of Science High School held their Back to School Night for families on Thursday, September, 29th. At check-in, students received a sign-in sheet to ensure they were introducing their families to their core class and elective teachers. Families and students could walk freely throughout the first floor of the building to visit classrooms and meet grade-level teacher teams. Teachers handed out information about the course, and parents were able to schedule parent-teacher conferences or home visits to discuss their student's progress in more detail. We hope Back to School night was a positive and helpful experience for all who attended. We're looking forward to the rest of the school year and building success one Atom at a time.
It’s time to shine the spotlight on another outstanding Atom! Allow us to introduce you to Ms. Taylor, administrative assistant at Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary school! Nezamiyah worked hard in school, earning many awards throughout her time at Citizenship. She was a great friend to all and a leader in her class. One of Nezamiyah's passions was gymnastics. At recess it was a guarantee Nezamiyah would be practicing her tumbling and cartwheels with her friends. She wanted to be a gymnastics coach when she grew up. Nezamiyah enjoyed reading and adored art. We can’t begin to imagine the pain her family is experiencing with this tragic loss. Please join us for a spaghetti dinner fundraiser to benefit the family of Nezamiyah White on Saturday, December 17th at the Syracuse Academy of Science high school cafeteria. Stop by anytime from 5 to 9 pm for dine in or take out. Dinners are $10 each and all proceeds will go to Nezamiyah’s family. Thank you for coming together to help out as a community. We are many atoms, one family.
13. Friday, December 2nd, 2022: Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school teacher Ms. Cahalan hosts a girls' group that meets on Fridays at the end of the day. The girls talk about skills they can use to resolve social conflict healthily while having fun building with legos. The meetings are a positive experience for our Atoms and Ms. Cahalan!
14. Wednesday, November 30th, 2022: As part of our Culturally Responsive Teachings, throughout November, Syracuse Academy of Science elementary Atoms worked on a family project: Family Traditions. Every family has unique traditions held near and dear to their hearts. They are part of what makes each family special and unique. Families were encouraged to talk about beloved traditions within their homes. Following this conversation, we asked families to help their students draw and write out the four steps of a family tradition to share with our community. Family traditions ranged from holiday traditions, birthdays, family vacations, and the first day of school rituals. We loved getting a glimpse into our students' families and home lives. Stay tuned for December's family project!
15. Wednesday, November 30th, 2022: Fourth Graders at Syracuse Academy of Science learned all about Central New York’s history during a field trip to the Onondaga Historical Association. Atoms received a guided tour of the museum and watched a sound and light show, all while learning about important historical events like Syracuse’s role in the underground railroad. The museum displayed important artifacts from history for the students to see. They even got to listen to music from a record player! Thank you to the OHA for hosting us. It was a very informative trip for our students.
16. Wednesday, November 30th, 2022: Do you have a favorite family recipe? Maybe it's your grandma's gooey chocolate chip cookies or your mom's chicken noodle soup. 5th, 6th, and 7th graders are cooking up something exciting at Syracuse Academy of Science middle school! Atoms shared their family's favorite recipes and maybe even some secret recipes with our Student Council members, who created a book to share with everyone. Atoms can purchase Recipe Books for $5 (cash only). Students can buy them in homeroom or by seeing Ms. Chapman.
17. Tuesday, November 22nd, 2022: 7th-grade middle school students exercised their presentation and teamwork skills with the What’s in the Room “sales pitch.” Students were given 20 minutes to choose an item in the room and brainstorm how to sell it to the judges (AKA Mrs. Nickless, Mr. Jan, and Ms. Obrist). Then they had to create a flier including the name of the product, logo/slogan, how much they were selling the item for, and where they could sell it. Students wowed the judges with colorful fliers, website designs, and even a commercial!

30. Friday, November 4th, 2022: We’ve all heard the saying “hard work pays off.” Head soccer coach, Mr. Bility, couldn’t agree more. Since August, when Syracuse Academy of Science finally got its own soccer field, he knew it was time to get to work. The team had been anxiously waiting to step on that field since Covid-19 started. Fast forward to 2022, the SAS Atoms were able to compete in their first official season as a school team. The season had many ups and downs, but the team competed and fought in every game until the last whistle. Even coaches from other schools saw this hard work in our student-athletes and wanted to recognize them.

Jamal Abdirahman: First Team All Patriots League
Taha Hayali: First Team All Patriots League
