Thursday, January 12th, 2023: It's time to shine the light on one of Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School's amazing teachers! Meet Ms. Alonso-Bergevin or Ms. AB to our Atoms! Ms. AB received her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from SUNY Oswego. She loves spending time with her family and is most inspired by her students! Ms. AB is a dedicated art teacher who loves sharing her knowledge and skill set with all students. Thank you, Ms. AB, for being an integral part of our team!
Monday, January 9th, 2023: Now through January 20th, Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School is leading a donation drive for the non-profit organization "We Rise Above the Streets Recovery Outreach, Inc." This charity has been led by Al-amin Muhammad for over five years and has focused on advocating for homeless/underrepresented populations in Syracuse. The organization helps provide these groups with food, clothing, and basic hygiene items. Every Saturday, Al-amin and his crew of volunteers host a 'Sandwich Saturday' at 10 am in Billings Park, where they hand out food and other necessities to individuals and families struggling to provide for themselves. The charity's main mission is to help break the cycle of homelessness and crime by showing them how to live to their full potential. We will collect new children and adult winter apparel and travel-sized hygiene products to donate to "We Rise Above the Streets" at the end of the month. If your student brings in three items, they will earn one dress-down pass. We encourage you to make a difference and share the warmth!
Monday, January 9th, 2023: Did you know Meditation can help improve student behavior? Mediation has been shown to help with improved memory and concentration, increased confidence and self-esteem, and can even lead to higher grades and test scores. At Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school, one of our 4th-grade Atoms has been working with Social-Emotional Support Specialist Ms. Cahalan to practice some Meditation skills. Recently, that student has begun offering his services to one of our 3rd-grade classes.
Wednesday, January 4th, 2023: Syracuse Academy of Science 2nd graders spent the day at WonderWorks inside Destiny USA. They went on a 4D ride, made gigantic bubbles, dug in an interactive sandbox, and played music on the grand piano. Some atoms were even brave enough to lay on a bed of nails! WonderWorks is the perfect field trip for combining learning and fun; our scholars were lucky enough to experience both!
Thursday, December 22nd, 2022: It may be January and the start of a brand new year, but we're highlighting our December students of the month at Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school. Before going on break, SAS Elementary celebrated December's character trait of Caring/Compassion. Caring is showing kindness and concern for others. Compassion is showing and having that concern for the misfortunes or sufferings of others. Students from each grade were selected for showing December's character trait and celebrated all day. Please join us in congratulating these caring and compassionate Atoms!

Voice students who received vocal coaching from Ms. Carlson and guest artists performed solos and duets from diverse genres. Band students played music they workshopped on a visit to Ithaca College earlier in the fall and music by conductor and composer Sean O'Loughlin. Mr. O'Loughlin visited students Friday to regale them with stories from working in the L.A. music industry and inspire them to learn and work hard in music and school. We enjoyed celebrating students' hard work this fall and welcoming the winter season with a reception sponsored by Wegmans following the concert.
Friday, December 16th, 2022: Band students and several other Syracuse Academy of Science high school atoms had the pleasure of meeting composer Sean O’Loughlin. The group was blessed with excellent weather, and our students had a chance to learn more about their country's history by visiting the Independence National Historical Park, the Liberty Bell, and the President's House Site! Most of our students didn't know that Philadelphia served as our nation's capital until 1800, when the federal government moved to its permanent home in Washington, DC. After visiting Independence Park, they walked around Downtown Philadelphia, visited China Town and had lunch at Philadelphia Reading Terminal Market, where they had a chance to choose from a variety of food vendors! It was a very productive event and a part of the effort for SANY to set up a benchmark concerning school safety and security.

1. Tuesday, April 11th, 2023: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) members have teamed up with The H. Lee White Maritime Museum in Oswego to create The Proposed Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary. This proposal would protect the underwater world and preserve the historical shipwrecks and aircraft beneath the surface. This partnership creates opportunities for educating our communities and youth. NOAA and The Oswego Maritime Museum members visited Syracuse Academy of Science High School together. Students participated in a workshop to learn STEM career opportunities through NOAA, discover the proposed Sanctuary at Lake Ontario, and use the design and engineering process to create their own Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV.) Students spent two hours of the workshop designing and building an ROV, which concluded with testing their ROV for Neutral Buoyancy. In May, students will visit the shores of Lake Ontario to test their ROVs in a friendly competition. If mother nature cooperates, we're hoping for a boat ride on the Great Lake to the Lake Ontario Lighthouse.
2. Tuesday, April 11th, 2023: Congressman Brandon Williams visited Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School after 2nd graders wrote two letters to his office inviting him to speak to our students. We were honored that he chose to accept our offer! The Congressman not only spent some time reading to Atoms, but he also told them about why he chose a job in the government and how his desire to make changes to our country and serve the citizens was his driving force. He told us that he hasn't been part of the government for very long, only about 100 days, and shared what he did for a living before entering the government. Congressman Williams was in the Navy and spent most of his time on a submarine off the coast of San Francisco. He shared details with students about how long he was on the submarine, what he ate, how large it was, and how the submarine could descend and then return to the water's surface. Students could also ask questions about the hardest and best parts of his job as a Congressman! SANY Superintendent Dr. Hayali took the Congressman and his wife on a tour of our school. What a wonderful experience for our 2nd-grade Atoms! Thank you, Congressman Williams!
3. Monday, April 3rd, 2023: Happy Spring Recess! This is a friendly reminder that Syracuse Academy of Science will be closed from Monday, April 3rd, through Friday, April 7th, for Spring Recess. We look forward to welcoming Atoms back on Monday, April 10th. Enjoy the time off!
4. Saturday, April 1st, 2023: Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School Science Fair winners had the opportunity to participate in the MOST's CNY Science & Engineering Fair hosted at Le Moyne College! Atoms saw projects from students of all ages across Syracuse and presented their projects to the judges. We are very proud of how hard they worked to prepare and how well they represented our school at the fair! Congratulations Atoms!
5. Wednesday, March 29th, 2023: Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School collected canned and dry foods to donate to St. Lucy's Food Pantry in March. St. Lucy's goal is for people in need to come to their food pantry and have the same selections they would be able to at the grocery store. Families and #SASAtoms showed generosity by bringing food items ranging from mac n cheese to canned fruits and vegetables to their favorite cereals! Atoms received a dress-down pass for participating, but the whole school felt the magic of giving to those in need. Great job paying it forward, Atoms.
6. Wednesday, March 29th, 2023: The Yavuz family joined Syracuse Academy of Science second graders in Ms. Peryea's class to teach them about Ramadan, the holy month in Islam. Ramadan is observed from March 22nd through April 20th by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. The family shared some of the traditions they have in their house to celebrate Ramadan and the purpose behind them. Their son Mahir read "It's Ramadan, Curious George '' and answered questions from the class. Mrs. Yavuz prepared a beautiful lantern craft for students to complete. They also gave students a Ramadan coloring activity as a parting gift! We love to learn about other cultures and traditions, and we appreciate our student's family sharing their time with us!
7. 10. Monday, March 10th, 2023: We would like to give a huge shoutout to William Wristley for donating a 3D printer and equipment to Syracuse Academy of Science High School. We are so grateful for your generosity and can’t wait to utilize this with our robotics program!
11. Friday, March 10th, 2023: Ms. Negron and Ms. Goyer's Kindergarten B class had a morning visit from the Science Academies of New York Superintendent Dr. Hayali. Dr. Hayali read the book "Skin Like Mine" by Latashia M. Perry to the students and discussed how everyone is different, and that's ok. It's important to love yourself for who you are. Dr. Hayali talked about his background, where he is from, and what he does as the superintendent of our school district. (It's more than just being a "super cool teacher" that "gives the kids cookies!" as some of our scholars stated!) Kindergarten B did a great job listening, raising their hands, and taking turns talking during the visit. Thank you, Dr. Hayali, for taking the time to read to our Atoms and chat with them!
12. Monday, March 6th, 2023: Syracuse Academy of Science 7C class channeled their inner artist for a clay project! 7. Thursday, April 13th, 2023: Syracuse Academy of Science second-grade students spent the day touring and learning about the SUNY Oswego campus. They saw a residence hall and took a trip to the theater, where they did a color-sorting activity learning about how the cones in your eyes absorb colors. Students also saw the miniature Zamboni named "Mini" and watched it shoot out a t-shirt. They had to estimate the distance it traveled and then measure it (17 meters in case anyone was wondering!) This tour was organized and run by the Education Department at SUNY Oswego, where future teachers could plan their daily activities. It was a wonderful experience for our young Atoms. Not many 2nd graders can say they’ve toured a college before!
8. Tuesday, April 11th, 2023: Shari Merten, the Learning and Engagement Coordinator from the Everson Museum of Art, visited Syracuse Academy of Science Kindergarteners. Shari shared a picture of the museum with students and told them about what a museum is, what kinds of things you can find there, and who works there. 10. Tuesday, March 28th, 2023: Mr. Stowe took Syracuse Academy of Science students to visit D'Youville and Daemen Universities in Buffalo, NY. It was an excellent opportunity for seniors to experience campus life. For the Juniors, it was an eye-opening experience, and some ended up adding an unexpected school to their application list. All got treated to a delicious lunch at D'Youville and saw Daemen's student residence hall. Sadly, Mr. Stowe couldn't get the students to try Tim Hortons. He was informed that most college campuses have Starbucks, which would be more authentic to the experience. See, even Mr. Stowe learned something!
11. Tuesday, March 28th, 2023: Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School held a ceremony in honor of our 4th graders that achieved a level 3 or 4 on last year's ELA and Math state tests as part of Terra Science and Education's Junior Scholars Awards.
