SAS

1. Tuesday, April 11th, 2023: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) members have teamed up with The H. Lee White Maritime Museum in Oswego to create The Proposed Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary. This proposal would protect the underwater world and preserve the historical shipwrecks and aircraft beneath the surface. This partnership creates opportunities for educating our communities and youth. NOAA and The Oswego Maritime Museum members visited Syracuse Academy of Science High School together. Students participated in a workshop to learn STEM career opportunities through NOAA, discover the proposed Sanctuary at Lake Ontario, and use the design and engineering process to create their own Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV.) Students spent two hours of the workshop designing and building an ROV, which concluded with testing their ROV for Neutral Buoyancy. In May, students will visit the shores of Lake Ontario to test their ROVs in a friendly competition. If mother nature cooperates, we're hoping for a boat ride on the Great Lake to the Lake Ontario Lighthouse.

2. Tuesday, April 11th, 2023: Congressman Brandon Williams visited Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School after 2nd graders wrote two letters to his office inviting him to speak to our students. We were honored that he chose to accept our offer! The Congressman not only spent some time reading to Atoms, but he also told them about why he chose a job in the government and how his desire to make changes to our country and serve the citizens was his driving force. He told us that he hasn't been part of the government for very long, only about 100 days, and shared what he did for a living before entering the government. Congressman Williams was in the Navy and spent most of his time on a submarine off the coast of San Francisco. He shared details with students about how long he was on the submarine, what he ate, how large it was, and how the submarine could descend and then return to the water's surface. Students could also ask questions about the hardest and best parts of his job as a Congressman! SANY Superintendent Dr. Hayali took the Congressman and his wife on a tour of our school. What a wonderful experience for our 2nd-grade Atoms! Thank you, Congressman Williams!

3. Monday, April 3rd, 2023: Happy Spring Recess! This is a friendly reminder that Syracuse Academy of Science will be closed from Monday, April 3rd, through Friday, April 7th, for Spring Recess. We look forward to welcoming Atoms back on Monday, April 10th. Enjoy the time off!

4. Saturday, April 1st, 2023: Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School Science Fair winners had the opportunity to participate in the MOST's CNY Science & Engineering Fair hosted at Le Moyne College! Atoms saw projects from students of all ages across Syracuse and presented their projects to the judges. We are very proud of how hard they worked to prepare and how well they represented our school at the fair! Congratulations Atoms!

5. Wednesday, March 29th, 2023: Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School collected canned and dry foods to donate to St. Lucy's Food Pantry in March. St. Lucy's goal is for people in need to come to their food pantry and have the same selections they would be able to at the grocery store. Families and #SASAtoms showed generosity by bringing food items ranging from mac n cheese to canned fruits and vegetables to their favorite cereals! Atoms received a dress-down pass for participating, but the whole school felt the magic of giving to those in need. Great job paying it forward, Atoms.

6. Wednesday, March 29th, 2023: The Yavuz family joined Syracuse Academy of Science second graders in Ms. Peryea's class to teach them about Ramadan, the holy month in Islam. Ramadan is observed from March 22nd through April 20th by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. The family shared some of the traditions they have in their house to celebrate Ramadan and the purpose behind them. Their son Mahir read "It's Ramadan, Curious George '' and answered questions from the class. Mrs. Yavuz prepared a beautiful lantern craft for students to complete. They also gave students a Ramadan coloring activity as a parting gift! We love to learn about other cultures and traditions, and we appreciate our student's family sharing their time with us!

7. Wednesday, March 29th, 2023: The Syracuse Academy of Science High School Robotics team visited Citizenship & Science Academy Charter School to promote robotics, engineering, and STEM events in our community. Team members demonstrated their robot atom and discussed building, designing, and programming a robot. At the end of the presentation, 6th and 7th graders had the chance to drive the robot! We hope the Robotics Team’s outreach sessions were very informative to the 43 students who attended!

8. Thursday, March 23rd, 2023: Ian Mortimer, the President of the Golisano Institute in Rochester, visited Syracuse Academy of Science high school. The Golisano Institute is a nonprofit that offers a non-traditional alternative to college for high school graduates looking to enter the business world. The two-year certificate program will focus on business and entrepreneurship. The school will help decrease the cost of attending a traditional business school. Students will be charged $8,900 a year with scholarships available. It’s an excellent alternative for students looking to land a career in business or start their own company. Thank you, Ian, for your time.

9. Friday, March 17, 2023: Syracuse Academy of Science 7th graders kicked it over to The Ultimate Goal in Marcellus. Atoms had a great time participating in team-building activities and games. It was a great field trip, and scholars had fun playing on the green field on the green day (St. Patrick's Day!)

10.  Monday, March 10th, 2023: We would like to give a huge shoutout to William Wristley for donating a 3D printer and equipment to Syracuse Academy of Science High School. We are so grateful for your generosity and can’t wait to utilize this with our robotics program!

11.  Friday, March 10th, 2023: Ms. Negron and Ms. Goyer's Kindergarten B class had a morning visit from the Science Academies of New York Superintendent Dr. Hayali. Dr. Hayali read the book "Skin Like Mine" by Latashia M. Perry to the students and discussed how everyone is different, and that's ok. It's important to love yourself for who you are. Dr. Hayali talked about his background, where he is from, and what he does as the superintendent of our school district. (It's more than just being a "super cool teacher" that "gives the kids cookies!" as some of our scholars stated!) Kindergarten B did a great job listening, raising their hands, and taking turns talking during the visit. Thank you, Dr. Hayali, for taking the time to read to our Atoms and chat with them!

12.  Monday, March 6th, 2023: Syracuse Academy of Science 7C class channeled their inner artist for a clay project! Students chose either a project posted to their Google classroom or their own design. After problem-solving how they would create their art, they started sculpting with air-dry clay (along with traditional clay techniques such as slip and score, slabs, coils, etc.) to create various 3D art pieces.

13.  Friday, March 3rd, 2023: Syracuse Academy of Science High School music students traveled to our state’s capital. Atoms were honored to perform in the capitol building, visited the SUNY Albany campus and music program, and attended a show before going out to dinner. Students also met with Syracuse Academy of Science alumni Illyn McLaurin and heard about her freshman experience. It was an excellent opportunity for our music students to explore Albany and get a taste of college life just a couple of months before graduation!

14.  Wednesday, March 1st, 2023: College visits are important to our education at the Science Academies of New York. Syracuse Academy of Science High School students visited Utica University and were given a thorough campus tour, including academic and athletic facilities. Students ate lunch in the dining hall to top off the college experience. After lunch, scholars moved across the Mohawk River to SUNY Polytechnic Institute. After an information session, students experienced an in-depth view of another campus, including their tech and makerspaces.

15.  Tuesday, February 28th, 2023: February's character trait was Ambition at Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School. Ambition is to have a strong desire to do or achieve something. An ambitious student sets goals and works hard to meet them. Students of the month are announced on the morning announcements by the Syracuse Academy of Science Dean, Mrs. Miller. Students of the Month are given a special pin to wear and are celebrated by staff and students all day. Congratulations to our Ambitious Atoms!

16.  Thursday, February 16th, 2023: Syracuse Academy of Science 3rd Graders had the chance to swing over to The Ultimate Goal Family Sport Center in Marcellus for a day of athletic fun and team-building! Atoms played soccer and dodgeball, used the rope swing, and played an intense game of musical chairs. Thanks to Ultimate Goal for hosting all of our classes!

17.  Wednesday, February 15th, 2023: STEM Night returned to Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School for the first time in years. One activity had families working together to build a structure to survive an earthquake! Another had atoms and their families trying to build a house of cards. Atoms also had fun making bouncy balls, learning which objects sink or float, and even paper airplanes! Ms. Pat from Bett's Branch Library was here too with an activity where students got to create different buildings from our local Syracuse community. Atoms that participated in STEM night earned a dress-down pass. It was a fun-filled night of science!

4. Friday, March 24th, 2023: Did you know March is music in our school's month? Citizenship Academy came together for a music-themed spirit week to show how much we love music. Atoms dressed in blue to celebrate Blues music, styled their hair like a Rock Star, represented musical cultures, glamorized themselves for the red carpet, and became Pop Star sensations. Music teachers taught students music from the USA, India, Mexico, Japan, and Africa. Outside of the music room, students wrote about why they love music. We are so happy to have music in our school!

The Rescue Mission was so grateful to our students and their families for the generous donation!

4. Wednesday, March 14h, 2023:  Utica Academy of Science Junior-Senior High School students had a smashing Pi Day, all while raising money for individuals affected by the earthquake in Turkey and Syria. Atoms purchased a ticket for a “pie” made of shaving cream to smash into a teacher's face! Pi Day at Utica Academy of Science was a huge success, thanks to the staff and students hard work and dedication. By emphasizing the educational value of math and its connection to real-world issues, UAS has demonstrated its commitment to fostering a love of learning and a passion for intellectual curiosity among its students. In class, the students are learning about habitats and wildlife conversation. Every living thing needs five things to survive in its habitats: Food, Shelter, Water, Air, and Space. Scholars had fun exploring and expanding their learning beyond the classroom walls! Bonding with furry friends was a bonus, too.

2.     Friday, April 28th, 2023: R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Find out what it means to me! Believe it or not, April is almost over, but we’re throwing it back to Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary Schools March Character Trait of the Month. Atoms found out that Respect means admiring or looking up to someone because that person has done something extraordinary or possesses impressive abilities. Respect is also an act of giving attention or showing you care. Students of the Month were celebrated for exhibiting respectful behavior. Congratulations to our March Students of the Month!

3.     Thursday, April 27th, 2023: Syracuse Academy of Science 4th-grade students were paid a special visit by Assemblywoman Pamela Hunter's office representative Matt Jones. Mr. Jones presented a medal to Destinee, whose work is displayed at the New York State Art Teachers Association 34th Annual Legislative Show. Mr. Jones also told students about Assemblywoman Hunter's job and why she ran for office. Congratulations, Destinee, and thank you, Mr. Jones, for coming to our school!

4.     Thursday, April 27th, 2023: Syracuse Academy of Science High School held the annual Dean’s List Dinner. Family, friends, and loved one’s came to celebrate their Atom’s incredible accomplishments. 7 through 12th-grade scholars on the Dean’s List were invited to enjoy a meal in the high school gym with their families and teachers before a formal award ceremony. We are so proud of all their hard work and dedication this year. We can’t wait to see how our students will continue to give to the SANY motto of building success one Atom at a time. Thank you for supporting and encouraging your student along the way!

5.     Monday, April 24th, 2023: Syracuse Academy of Science high school celebrated our hardworking and deserving science fair winners! Students were rewarded with a pizza party in the conference room before a short award ceremony. Students in grades 8th through 11th were awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place based on their preparation (research paper, writing journal, and background research study.) Each grade was also given student choice awards, which their peers analyzed. Congratulations to all the science fair winners! You make us proud!!

6.     Friday, April 14th, 2023: Syracuse Academy of Science first graders enjoyed the gorgeous afternoon learning about plants and flowers at Crazy Daisies! Atoms went on a scavenger hunt in the greenhouse, bravely tasted edible flowers, and even potted their own plant to take home! Thank you, Crazy Daisies, for hosting us!

7.     Thursday, April 13th, 2023: Syracuse Academy of Science second-grade students spent the day touring and learning about the SUNY Oswego campus. They saw a residence hall and took a trip to the theater, where they did a color-sorting activity learning about how the cones in your eyes absorb colors. Students also saw the miniature Zamboni named "Mini" and watched it shoot out a t-shirt. They had to estimate the distance it traveled and then measure it (17 meters in case anyone was wondering!) This tour was organized and run by the Education Department at SUNY Oswego, where future teachers could plan their daily activities. It was a wonderful experience for our young Atoms. Not many 2nd graders can say they’ve toured a college before!

8.     Tuesday, April 11th, 2023: Shari Merten, the Learning and Engagement Coordinator from the Everson Museum of Art, visited Syracuse Academy of Science Kindergarteners. Shari shared a picture of the museum with students and told them about what a museum is, what kinds of things you can find there, and who works there. Shari also read the book "A Perfectly Messed Up Story" by Patrick McDonnell, which teaches the students that it's ok to make a mess and make mistakes. Thank you to Shari and the Everson Museum for sharing your museum with our students!

9.     Saturday, April 1st, 2023: Syracuse Academy of Science High School students attended the Central New York Science And Engineering Fair. Atoms won several national and international awards and will represent our state at the Science Congress this year. Syracuse Academy of Science and Science Department Chair Dr. Ay were awarded the Peter Plumley Engaged Participation Award for the school whose students submitted the highest number of high-quality science fair projects in any division. All participants received a one-year membership to the MOST. Grace O’Neill & Migual Mathis were chosen to attend the New York State Science Congress on June 11th. Grace, Miguel & Ale’la Gillard were selected for The RIT Genius Olympiad Awards, which recognizes achievement in promoting environmental issues and finding solutions to global environmental problems through scientific research, experimentation, and presentation. 10.  Tuesday, March 28th, 2023: Mr. Stowe took Syracuse Academy of Science students to visit D'Youville and Daemen Universities in Buffalo, NY. It was an excellent opportunity for seniors to experience campus life. For the Juniors, it was an eye-opening experience, and some ended up adding an unexpected school to their application list. All got treated to a delicious lunch at D'Youville and saw Daemen's student residence hall. Sadly, Mr. Stowe couldn't get the students to try Tim Hortons. He was informed that most college campuses have Starbucks, which would be more authentic to the experience. See, even Mr. Stowe learned something!

11.  Tuesday, March 28th, 2023: Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School held a ceremony in honor of our 4th graders that achieved a level 3 or 4 on last year's ELA and Math state tests as part of Terra Science and Education's Junior Scholars Awards. The Junior Scholars Award is just one of several scholarship opportunities provided to SANY students by Terra. 4th-grade scholars received a $25 gift card for achieving a 3 or 4 on either the ELA or Math (up to $50 for a 3 or 4 on both), with another $25 awarded to students that achieved a four on both! These awards challenge students to do their best and prepare for future high-stakes tests. This year's third graders joined the celebration and cheered on the 4th graders for their incredible achievements while gaining extra motivation to do their best on the upcoming state tests. We are incredibly proud of the effort put forth by all of our 4th graders, and we can't wait to see what the 3rd and 4th grades can do this year!

12.  Monday, March 6th, 2023: Black History Month may be officially over, but we’re still highlighting a project Syracuse Academy of Science 5th graders worked hard on! ELA students read books and researched change makers to learn more about their impact on our community. They finished the project by overcoming public speaking fears to present to their classmates and a few community members!

CSA Syracuse

1.     Friday, April 28th, 2023: Spring has sprung in class 1A at Citizenship Academy! Our 1st graders learned the importance of good soil, water, and sunlight to help little seeds grow. Students decorated their own growing cups to add some love to the process. We cannot wait to see what blooms!

2.     Tuesday, April 18th, 2023: Jason Fingerman visited Mr. Zinger's 5th-grade class to highlight careers in STEM. Mr. Fingerman works for SAAB as a Systems Engineer for Air Traffic Management Safety and Efficiency. He explained how his job is like solving one big puzzle for a living and showed Atoms the "Flight Aware" software he uses. "Flight Aware" is a real-time flight tracking system that Mr. Zinger uses in his classes as part of STEAM lessons. Mr. Fingerman also demonstrated SAAB's Aerobahn product used with commercial airlines to give the attendees a sense of how the big airlines and airports use Aerobahn to help with surface management. Students asked insightful questions and were very interested in learning more. Thank you for your time, Mr. Fingerman!

3.     Tuesday, February 28th, 2023: Citizenship & Science Academy of Syracuse had the owner of Tuft Talk, Tiffany Seals, as a guest speaker to close out our 28 speakers event. Students got hands-on experience making custom rugs while also getting a history lesson about where and how tufting started. Our students' high engagement and enthusiasm made this special event a memorable and meaningful experience for everyone. Thank you, Tiffany, for inspiring our students!

UAS

1.     Wednesday, May 3rd, 2023: Utica Academy of Science Charter School is pleased to announce we are celebrating ten years of growth and success in the community! We have come a long way from offering grades 6-9 to expanding to K-12.  In 2013, under Dr. Tolga Hayali's leadership, the Science Academies of New York (SANY) opened Utica Academy of Science. After two successful years, UAS expanded to a second location on School Lane in Frankfort. In 2018, UAS received a five-year renewal from the New York State Board of Regents. Shortly after, UAS added an elementary school. In 2021, both of our Utica locations combined into one school in Frankfort. Utica Academy of Science is currently awaiting approval for another five-year renewal from the NYS Board of Regents.

2.     Friday, April 28th, 2023: Utica Academy of Science fourth-grade class traveled to Fort Stanwix, where they became history detectives! They used teamwork and problem-solving skills to solve mysteries and discover facts about the 1777 siege of Fort Stanwix. It was an unforgettable trip for our Atoms!
