VII. Discussion Items

1. Financial status and budget: No updates were given

2. Frankfort location construction update: Construction is mostly done and local permits were received, however SED requested additional requirements since it is scgool owned building which may delay certain parts of the renovations and increased the cost about $250K. However there is a possibility of it may not be ready for the new school year. Board has discussed the benefits of renting rather than owning a property again, since it might be faster to get approvals on a rental school building. Also, it does not take as much time from administrators time so they can focus more on educational programs. The board decided to discuss this matter in length and turn into a policy in the future meetings. In the new policy, board may look into rent vs rent analysis in order to get the best deal for its rental properties.

3. Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) update: About $3million loan was forgiven

4. Strategic Planning Meeting Schedule: Board would like to set up a strategic meeting for the year to discuss 2-3 areas for improvement and also 1-2 new areas of innovation/growth.

5. Recycling assets: Broken Chromebooks, outdated projectors, monitors, and similar IT assets will be disposed according to school policy.

VII. Discussion Items

1. Board and Superintendent evaluation on Survey Monkey:

2. Construction update: There were several updates requested by NYSED Facilities Dept. such as updated fire alarm system for whole building, additional fire walls, additional fire hydrants around the building, HVAC updates, additional engineering drawings (originally it was designed by built and aligned with NYS building codes, as our previous constructions). These are required by NYSED facilities dept. without any funding as they provide capital aid funding for traditional district schools. These changes were done even though local city officials did not require and approve the construction based on NYS Building codes.

3. COVID relief funding update: Funds will be utilized to prioritize school culture, social emotional support of our students, and fill in student achievement gaps that were created due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All areas in which funding will be implemented aligns directly with our district’s priority on student and staff safety, and CDC guidelines. Students and staff members participating in summer, weekend, after school, and tutoring programs will be required to wear masks and remain adequately socially distanced. New staff members will receive in depth training on our school’s COVID-19 safety protocols, and all new technology purchased will be properly sanitized between student usage. Daily cleaning throughout the school day of high traffic areas will continue to be a priority in addition to nightly deep cleaning of classrooms. The district’s HVAC air filtration system has been upgraded to increase air circulation and ventilation throughout the school. As an added layer of safety, we will continue to provide our students with safety dividers while eating, send out student and staff health surveys and conduct temperature checks upon student, staff, and visitor arrival. With strong parent communication and support, tutoring opportunities will expand beyond the school day and into weekend and evening sessions for students in need. In order to ensure that our school has the ability to offer a wide range of support for our students, we will be using the majority of the funding to employ Academic Intervention Specialists, additional Teaching Assistants, Behavior Specialists, and Counselors.

4. Diversity, equity, inclusion growing pipeline of teacher - Teacher of color recruitment: SANY schools have student teaching programs with local colleges, such as SU and SUNY Cortland. In addition, SANY schools open to hire staff of color as co-teachers if they are not certified but willing to be work towards certification and pay for their TCMP program so they can be a classroom teachers. In addition, SANY school admins and board members travel to southern states and HBC to recruit teacher of colors to relocate to upstate NY. As a new program, SANY schools would like to partner with Terra Science Education to support its alumni of color who would like to be a teacher. SANY Schools will create a track for this program within its schools and students who choose to be in the program will go to college for free with Terra’s support and will be asked to work at SANY schools after graduation. Providing chromebooks and internet access to its students during COVID created equity.

5. Special population percentages: School’s focus on increasing ELL population continues and with ELL weighted lottery, the schools see some increase especially total number of ELL applicants are high but still increase very small due to our size. However, the schools will continue push for this and keep it as its one of the main focuses. The schools are working on new RTI management system using newly developed TEDS-Intervene program which will be helpful for identifying and documenting students with needs

6. Teacher Summer Institute: 3 weeks program for new teachers with focus on mission and vision and our student centered philosophy. For our existing teachers, there will be PD for them, including Science Curriculum PD,

7. Science curriculum: Amplify Science Curriculum K-8 is purchased and teachers received their first PD on this curriculum, especially how to use hands on activities. PD will continue in Summer Institute and school year so the curriculum is implemented fully throughout the schools with continues support to teachers. This topic was provided by teachers as need improvement in teacher surveys.

8. New Board member candidate Jody DeAugustine: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jodi-deaugustine-7067b045/ Jody has been involved and has been committed in two major non-profits in Syracuse; Vera House and Gigis Play. She has experience in financial sector and has worked closely with SANY schools when she was the Pathfinder Bank Syracuse Branch Manager for multiple years and knows our schools very well. She will be a good addition to provide financial insights as well create new connections for our schools through her network.

9. Congressional Award Trips: Congressional Award program is a national leadership program that SANY schools use to get their students more independent and college ready. We believe that this program helps student’s college applications as well and aligned very well with our mission. SANY will encourage its staff to take students to weekend and holiday trips and camps which will be funded by the school. We believe these trips and camps provide great opportunities and exposure to our students who are from lower economic status and have never visited places.

10. Donations to Northside Learning Center, a nonprofit organization serving to refugee populations educational needs by providing extracurricular programs; SANY will donate its 6-8 years old functional Chromebooks which should be recycled based on its policy to Northside learning, rather than recycling. The Chromebooks will be used for students taking extracurrilar support at Northside learning center.

  1. Thursday, September 2nd, 2021—A little fun in the sun to celebrate the end of summer. We think, yes! Earlier today, Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school teachers, faculty and staff enjoyed each other's company along with participating in a variety of yard games at an outdoor BBQ. Thumbs up to a great year Atoms, we look forward to seeing you next week!

2. Wednesday, September 8th, 2021—Can you believe we are already into the second week of school? It seems like it was just yesterday that Syracuse Academy of Science opened its doors to welcome back its students for the 2021 - 2022 school year. We wish all of our students, teachers, faculty and staff a great year filled with knowledge, excitement, and learning. We look forward to seeing and hearing great things from the Atoms this school year. Happy first day of school!

3. Friday, September 10th, 2021—We all try hard not to ‘blink,’ but sometimes we just can’t help ourselves. Just like that, Syracuse Academy of Science charter schools completed their second week of the 2021 - 2022 school year. It’s elementary school shared with us how they celebrated their first week of the school year. With the infamous pictures of kindergarteners holding up their ‘First Day of Kindergarten’ signs, and students playing on the playground, it was so great seeing many new and returning faces this past couple of weeks. We hope all of our students have a wonderful school year.

4. Saturday, September 11th, 2021—It’s hard to believe that 20 years ago to this day, our lives tragically changed. Many of us know where we were when we heard the news that day. Some of us heard it on the radio, or watched the news that morning. While others may have heard the news from a coworker or a family member or friend. A day in history that we will never forget. Today, we mourn those who lost their lives, and grieve with those who lost friends and family. We would like to take this moment to thank all of our brave first responders, and those who have served or are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces. United we stand.

5. Friday, September 17th, 2021—During their first week of school Syracuse Academy of Science middle school Project Based Learning (PBL) students participated in the ‘What’s in the Room’ sales pitch project.

6. Friday, September 17th, 2021—During their first week of school, Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school students in grades 2-4 put their creativity and strategic thinking skills to work when playing Hasbro’s classic game, Jenga.

Friday, September 24th, 2021—Syracuse Academy of Science middle school project based learning students (PBL) in Ms. Obrist’s class will share the love of reading with the greater Syracuse community this year. Earlier this month, students raised awareness of this community project and called for donations from its community members. It’s with great pleasure that we share with you today, the students have achieved their goal in earning funding for their little free libraries and look forward to spreading the love of reading and books to others in need.

8. Thursday, September 30th, 2021—In late September, Syracuse Academy of Science high school hosted its annual Back to School night, for their students and families. During this time-honored tradition students and their families had an opportunity to visit and meet with their teachers, as well as, pick up a customized SANY swag bag, goodies and treats. It was so great to see everyone that attended, and it was a perfect way to kick-off the school year.

  1. Monday, August 23rd, 2021—It’s hard to believe that the first day of school is next week! To prepare for the upcoming 2021 - 2022 school year, Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school teachers, faculty and staff participated in a week-long Personal Development Training. Atoms welcomed guest presenters, Laurie Hoover and Cheryl Wells from Empower Federal Credit Union who shared information about their Dollar Dog program. During their session, they discussed the importance of students saving money at an early age. Atoms who currently participate in this program can bring deposits directly to the school and Laurie will take them back to the bank for them! In addition to guest speakers, teachers also participated in a variety of hands-on team building exercises and activities. Needless to say, they are eager and excited to see the Atoms next week for the first day of school!

2. Wednesday, September 1st, 2021—As summer began to wind down, Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school teachers put their creativity to the test for their Meet the Teacher event that kept health and safety in mind for all. We wish all of our students, teachers, faculty and staff a great year filled with knowledge, excitement, and learning. We look forward to seeing and hearing great things from the Atoms this school year. Happy first day of school!

7. Friday, September 17th, 2021—Did you know that reading aloud is a vital part of instruction at Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school, and each day you will find staff reading to the students during class instruction or just for fun. Fourth grade students in Ms. Youker's class worked on their reading fluency and finding key words in text. For this task, students were asked to read independently, while Ms. Youker circled the room. If the students had any questions or needed assistance with a word or its meaning they would raise their hand.

Superintendent’s Report

SAS

  1. Thursday, September 30th, 2021—For the month of September, Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school students were recognized for demonstrating the character trait of responsibility. We would like to congratulate the students selected for September's Student of the Month ceremony! Keep up the great work.

2. Friday, October 1st, 2021—Traffic came to a halt when Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school students and their families came to school Friday morning, and saw teacher Ms. A-B dressed as a traffic cone! Who says you can’t ‘reroute’ a little fun, excitement and laughter on a school day … especially on a Friday? What a fun way to celebrate and kick-off the start of October.

3. Friday, October 8th, 2021—What could Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school students in Ms. Dickinson’s class possibly be doing on a beautiful fall day? Why conducting a hands-on, minds-on science experiment of course! For this science experiment, students utilized the sunlight to cast shadows on a variety of objects. Students were tasked with documenting the shadows the objects created, as well as any additional findings.

4. Tuesday, October 12th, 2021—We all know the Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school students are super creative and love a good challenge, but wait until you see what they have been working on throughout the month of October in their art classes. To start us off, let's look at the Kindergarten Atoms. This month, the students have been busy working on projects that are geared towards developing and refining their fine motor skills. These include: coloring, cutting and gluing. Their project was creating their very own ladybug! The 2nd grade Atoms mixed things up a bit with their 100 color challenge! We all know that Atoms are always up for a good challenge, and this one certainly didn't disappoint. For this challenge, students were tasked with creating 100 different colors using only the following paint colors: Red, Yellow, Blue, Black, and White. The 4th grade Atoms were busy folding away to create a radial design. For those not familiar with a radial design it is when visual materials are arranged around a central point, taking a roughly circular form. Students practiced their origami skills by folding colored paper to create unique and creative design pieces.

5. Tuesday, October 19th, 2021—Never stop exploring with the Syracuse Academy of Science 6th grade Project Based Learning (PBL) students! The PBL students said yes to new adventures during their team bonding field trip to Orenda Springs. Throughout the day, the students embodied the phrase, ‘your wings already exist. All you have to do is fly,’ when participating in the experiential learning challenges of the high and low ropes courses. These courses are not only physically challenging, but mentally as well which allowed the students to work on building trust with themselves and their fellow classmates.

6. Thursday, October 21st, 2021—Do you believe in the magic of textbooks? We most certainly do! Syracuse Academy of Science Charter Schools has teamed up with Rotary District 7150, and Terra Science and Education to sponsor three pallets of curriculum books to the Rotarian CNY Books of the World organization - who support efforts in getting books to people in Africa. We would like to thank all of those who helped make this donation possible, especially Mary Eileen Wood who put in a tremendous amount of effort and time, and hard work in providing the books to be donated.
