VII. Discussion Items

1. Financial status and budget: Board reviewed the financial dashboard summaries. We discussed how to reduce the functional cost so staff payments can be increased. Board also talked about increasing the number of students at Utica Academy in order to make its budget more workable.

2. Internal audit report: Internal audit report was reviewed and discussed.

3. New charter school application: New school application process is opened and available. The deadline is February 23rd for Letter of Intent. We would like to apply for Rochester one more time with updates based on NYSED feedback.

1. Thursday, November 7, 2019—Rain or shine, sophomore Atoms visited Colgate University for a college visit.

2. Friday, November 8, 2019—It’s time to celebrate the middle school Atoms for all their accomplishments in the month of November.

3. Tuesday, November 19, 2019—Each Student of the Month ceremony, there is a character trait that we encourage students to embrace both inside and outside the classroom.

4. Thursday, November 21, 2019—The Erie Canal plays an important role in the history of Syracuse. Fourth grade Atoms learned about the rich history of the canal along with its importance not only in Syracuse but for the trade and travel.

5. Thursday, November 21, 2019—High school robotics team had the privilege of welcoming guest speaker Robert Ringham, Enterprise AI Architect & Data Scientist at Avanade.

6. Thursday, November 21, 2019—The Adventure Cooperative for Environmental Stewardship Club, ACES, visited Central Rock Gym to practice cooperative climbing skills and move one step closer to larger outdoor adventures.

7. Monday, November 25, 2019—This was not your average Monday for Director of Dining Services - Chartwells K12, Tammy Pittsley. With balancing a full-time job, a family and planning on attending college in the fall, there was a lot on her mind. Little did she know, she was about to receive a surprise of a lifetime that would make things just a bit easier. The Chartwells team flew out to Syracuse, New York to surprise their National Scholarship recipient, Tammy, and present to her a full scholarship to attend DeVry University.

8. Tuesday, November 26, 2019—Former running back for the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars, Leroy Collins spoke with the middle and high school on how he was able to overcome adversity and set his eye on the prize … playing football in the NFL.

9. Sunday, December 8, 2019—High school Robotics team competed in the FTC Rochester Qualifier, and in true Atoms fashion won! With this recent victory, the Robotics team has qualified them for the next round of competition. Awards and Recognition:

10. Tuesday, December 10, 2019—First grade Atoms had the privilege of welcoming retired CNY Central news anchor, Laura Hand, who joined them as a guest reader. Ms. Hand read two short stories to the students, and also shared with them the inside scoop of being a news anchor.

11. Wednesday, December 11, 2019—It’s not every day that story time turns into a theatrical experience. But with the help of the Executive Director of Redhouse Art Center, Samara Hannah, she made the characters come to life.

12. Thursday, December 12, 2019—Elementary Atoms or should we say ‘karate kids’ visited Five Star Martial Arts on a class field trip.

13. Thursday, December 12, 2019—Fourth grade Atoms take to the stage and show off their impressive vocabulary knowledge and spelling skills at the annual Spelling Bee competition, in hopes of advancing to the next round - the local Spelling Bee.

14. Thursday, December 12, 2019—SASCS Elementary Atoms in 2A counted and packaged markers that no longer work to be recycled by Crayola ColorCycle program. ColorCycle is a great opportunity for teachers and their students to explore and discuss eco-friendly practices.

15. Friday, December 13, 2019—A tradition at Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School to participate in the making of a music video each year. Thanks to our friends at 325 Productions, this year our Atoms showed off their dance skills to the song, "Better When I'm Dancin'" by Meghan Trainor.

16. Friday, December 13, 2019—Elementary Atoms let their imagination run wild when on a field trip to Destiny USA’s WonderWorks Museum.

17. Monday, December 16, 2019—A festive evening of sight and sound at the annual Winter Concert courtesy of the high school visual and performing arts team. Students in the 8th grade, as well as, the Atoms in the art electives displayed their masterpieces for everyone to see. Following the performance, a catered reception from Wegmans was held.

18. Tuesday, December 17, 2019—Known for its prestige, the high school robotics team share with the middle school Atoms how this program in particular has opened many doors for a handful of its team members. The robotics team has participated in tournaments near and far and inspired the middle school students to continue to participate and study the field of robotics.

19. Wednesday, December 18, 2019—Ms. Dickinson and Mr. Scheemaker’s classes serve up kindness, gratitude and appreciation just before the winter recess. Classes team up and work together to create a beautiful thank you card, sign and special treats for a team that ensures there are healthy options for them to eat, create specialty meals for those with food allergies and for always having a smile on their face - the lunch team.

20. Wednesday, December 18, 2019—Elementary Atoms rallied together to help those in need in the greater Syracuse community. A week before winter recess, students collected toys for all age groups, and donated them to the Syracuse Rescue Mission.

21. Friday, December 20, 2019—What do you get when you mix high school Atoms, with shaving cream, volleyball and a half-day of school? You get a day filled with school spirit, of course! To kick-off the day before winter recess, high school Atoms had an opportunity to participate in an intense game of student vs. staff volleyball.

22. Saturday, January 4, 2019−Atoms collided when the Syracuse Academy of Science took on the Utica Academy of Science for the second annual Superintendent's Match last Saturday during the Mohawk Valley Basketball Classic. While Utica started with a strong lead, the Syracuse team turned the game around and walked away with the trophy. Until next year, Atoms.

SAS Citizenship

1. Monday, November 18, 2019—When an object is in motion, it will stay in motion unless … an elementary Atom acts upon it! The 4th grade class recently learned about energy, more specifically kinetic energy, during a recent lesson in science class. Eager to put that knowledge to the test for a little hands-on experiment, students visited The Ultimate Goal for a class field trip.

2. Wednesday, December 4, 2019—Atoms ‘seas the day’ on a class field trip to the Sciencenter. Having learned in the classroom about the ocean, students dive right in for this hands-on, minds-on experience. Atoms were able to interact and touch ocean animals such as starfish and hermit crabs in the large touch-tank, while learning about how animals survive in certain environments and how outside factors can affect those living conditions.

3. Wednesday, December 11, 2019—Swapping out boots for ice skates, Atoms get ready for the Winter Olympics. Okay, well maybe not … but they did get ready for an ‘ice day’ out at Meachem Ice Rink.

4. Friday, December 13, 2019—Get up everybody and … dance, because "We are Family" at Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship Elementary School. Each year, elementary Atoms participate in the making of a music dance video, thanks to our friends at 325 Productions. This year, their song of choice was "We are Family" by Sister Sledge.

UAS

1. Tuesday, November 19, 2019—High school Atoms visited the Marquee Cinema in New Hartford to see the new movie, Harriet - starring Cynthia Erivo as Harriet Tubman.

2. Thursday, November 21, 2019—Middle school Atoms head out on a college visit field trip, courtesy of Terra Science and Education, and visited both Hartwick College and SUNY Oneonta.

3. Friday, November 22, 2019—Each month, Utica Academy of Science middle school hosted their Coffee & Conversation event which allows parents/guardians to meet and speak with the school’s dean, counselor, teachers and behavior specialist. This is an incredible opportunity to get involved in your Atom’s education.

4. Monday, November 25, 2019—Everyone’s favorite hedgehog, Sonic, or well in this case Gus Gus, woke up from his nocturnal nap to meet the 7th grade Atoms during their Health class.

5. Tuesday, November 26, 2019—Ninth grade Atoms had an opportunity to participate in a hands-on, minds-on STEM immersion program courtesy of Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC) and the National Science Foundation (NSF).

6. Tuesday, November 26, 2019—Celebrating student success and achievement is always a highlight of the school year. The middle school hosted its Award Ceremony that rewarded the success of both the Atoms and teachers.

7. Tuesday, November 26, 2019—National Honor Society, a student based high school club at Utica Academy of Science, hosted its first-ever on campus student lock-in. This event allowed for Atoms to bond, strengthen friendships and build a community through a variety of activities.

8. Tuesday, November 26, 2019—Students in Mrs. Brown’s class learned how a simple letter could brighten up someone’s day, especially someone who is stationed overseas. In honor of Veteran’s Day, Atoms learned why we commemorate Veterans on Veteran’s Day.

9. Tuesday, December 10, 2019—High school staff, Mrs. Paul, Mr. Kovar and Mrs. Grabovica give back to the greater Utica area and community through Fidelis Care’s Stuff the Bus Camp Out. Teachers donated toys to help those less fortunate this holiday season.

10. Tuesday, December 10, 2019—We are excited to announce a new initiative brought to you by the high school Guidance Department. Throughout the remainder of the school year, they will be inviting a variety of colleges and career professionals to come in and speak to the students during the lunch hour at the Colleges and Career Spotlight Table.

11. Tuesday, December 10, 2019—With winter recess right around the corner, the 10th grade Atoms enjoyed a team bonding field trip to the Clinton Arena for ice skating.

12. Thursday, December 12, 2019—The 2019-2020 National Honor Society (NHS) inductees represent the first-ever class for Utica Academy of Science high school. It was quite the privilege to have 25 high school Atoms inducted.

13. Friday, December 13, 2019— Each year, Utica Academy of Science Elementary school participates in the making of a music dance video. Thanks to our friends at 325 Productions, students danced to the song "Better When I'm Dancin'" by Meghan Trainor.

14. Friday, December 13, 2019—Elementary Atoms, or should we say little chefs visit UNO Pizzeria on a class field trip. Each student had an opportunity to make their very own personal pan pizza.

15. Tuesday, December 17, 2019—With snow falling outside and looking like a winter wonderland, elementary Atoms cozied up for the day while creating some delicious masterpieces. Using graham crackers, frosting, candy canes, Twizzlers, and other sweet treats, Atoms went to work to create their very own gingerbread houses. Some of the construction material may have been eaten during the building process.

16. Wednesday, December 18, 2019—The week before Winter Recess, middle school Atoms (and their teachers) get competitive during a can-drive and see who can collect the most non-perishable food items to donate to the Veterans Outreach Center.

17. Wednesday, November 20, 2019—National Honor Society (NHS) is founded on the principle of service, character, leadership and scholarship. Giving back to the community is just one of the many ways our Atoms provide acts of service. One of the first outings for the NHS members was visiting the Masonic Care Community of New York.

18. Friday, December 20, 2019—Middle school Atoms enjoyed a fun-filled day leading up to winter recess. From music and dancing, to a variety of station activities to even a friendly class competition of soccer it was certainly a day to remember. Oh, did we mention that it was also a pajama day, and teachers and staff sang their parody ‘Ten Days Before Break My Students Said to Me?!’

19. Friday, December 20, 2019—The weather outside was ‘frightful’ but the sound of classic holiday tunes filling the halls right before winter recess was, oh so delightful. Elementary Atoms take the stage singing and performing music pieces during their Winter Concert. This event wouldn’t be possible without the tremendous help from parents, faculty and staff. Thank you for your generosity, and making this concert unforgettable.

VII. Discussion Items

1. Internal audit report: Internal audit report was reviewed and discussed. No exceptions were reported. He has been reviewing board policies and procedures. He made two recommendations: a- include board minutes for purchases required for board, b- have cross-training for staff for payroll process and do it on a regular basis as the process may change over time and staff is comfortable with taking over the responsibility when needed. Based on his recommendations, the school brought an update for its refreshments policy.

2. Academics Report: Assistant superintendent provided two reports. One provided information regarding the correlation of STAR tests of 2019 vs actual state results. In addition, February 2020 STAR results were discussed. All schools performing better compared to last year.

3. Utica Academy Additions: Architect posted the projects on Mohawk valley Builders Exchange and Syracuse Builders Exchange for bids. He also notified Rich& Gardner, Granger and Burke about the bidding project. Bids will open before the next board meeting.

2. Tuesday, December 17, 2019—Caring & Compassionate. December Student of the Month Atoms were celebrated for their kind, caring, and compassionate nature for their peers and teachers.

3. Thursday, December 19, 2020—First-grade SASAtoms celebrated the holiday season with a field trip to Painting with a Twist.

4. Tuesday, January 14, 2020—Eighth Grader Collin Dean will be performing with the Allegro Honor Band program with students from across CNY this spring. Now in its twenty-third year, Allegro Honor Ensembles is a Central New York based instrumental music program that provides performance opportunities for outstanding young musicians.

5. Wednesday, January 15, 2020—Fourth Grade Atoms visited Meachem Ice Rink for a morning of exercise and fun.

6. Wednesday, January 15, 2020—Atoms in grades K-4 that earned 75 plus dojo points in the month of December earned a special “Frozen Themed craft afternoon.” Complete with a Frozen sing alongside, Olaf puppets, Elsa crowns, and 2-D snowflakes!

7. Thursday, January 16, 2020—Middle school teachers and staff gathered for their first Collaborative Learning Partnership meeting also known as "Breakfast Club" as a first step in strengthening their bond as colleagues and growing as educators.

8. Friday, January 17, 2020—Students from the SAS High School Choir sang as part of a fundraiser for the Rescue Mission hosted at Raymour and Flanigan. Students entertained attendees with a variety of popular songs from the past 40 years.

9. Saturday, January 18, 2020—Is your phone charged? Did you bring an extra jacket? What is the address of the hotel again? You brought what kind of shoes?! During a recent trip to Boston, it was Juniors Daniel Pontello and Ron'Nal Glover's responsibility to ask the planning questions. In pursuit of The Congressional Award, Atoms must successfully plan an Exploration trip to an unfamiliar culture. Juniors Pontello and Glover chose to explore a new historical area or culture by coordinating a trip to the city of Boston. Atoms walked the cobblestone streets of the North End, turned through the courtyard at Harvard and explored the sights and smells of Faneuil Hall Marketplace.

10. Saturday, January 18, 2020—MK Ultra was first on the list during the 2020 Jewish Community Center of Syracuse Battle of the Bands.

11. Tuesday, January 21, 2020—In a Stop the Bleed course students learned quick techniques to help save a life before someone bleeds out: (1) How to use your hands to apply pressure to a wound; (2) How to pack a wound to control bleeding; (3) How to correctly apply a tourniquet.

12. Tuesday, January 21, 2020—Congratulations are in order for Syracuse Academy of Science Junior Huda Ali. Ali earned an Honorable Mention in the 2020 Central New York Scholastic Art Awards program.

13. Tuesday, January 22, 2020—We are SO excited to share that we have an Artist of the Week finalist on Artsonia, the WORLD'S Largest collection of online student art portfolios. The Finalist is here at #SASCS in KB - Jullian Mansaw!

14. Thursday, January 23, 2020—The #STEAM club at #SASCS MS burned the midnight oil to finish up their projects for the Global Canvas Art Competition. Atoms have been creating representations of endangered species and their environments of recycled materials.

15. Thursday, January 23, 2020—The Middle School #PBL class visited the Boys and Girls club and the Sovereign Grace Baptist Church. Both 6th and 7th grade #PBL classes are working on projects this year to help benefit their community.

16. Friday, January 24, 2020—#SASCS Kindergarten classes took a trip to the Museum of Science & Technology - MOST where they were able to see just how big dinosaurs were before they went extinct.

17. Saturday, January 25, 2020—#SASAtoms from the Middle School competed in the CNY Regional VEX IQ Robotics Challenge organized by Museum of Science & Technology - MOST

a. In the qualification round, our 7th-grade team ranked 4th out of more than 30 teams and received the highest score among all teams from Central New York schools.

b. At the end of the final rounds, the 7th-grade team won 3rd place.

c. The 5th-grade team won the most prestigious "Excellence Award"

d. The 7th-grade team was also awarded the "Sportsmanship Award."

18. Wednesday, January 26, 2020—Strike! Sixth Grade Atoms rolled over to Strike-N-Spare for a field trip to learn a little about bowling, a little about sportsmanship, and a lot about fun.

19. Monday, January 27, 2020—Our students kicked off National School Choice Week with a writing project about why they love Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School. Students recognized their teachers, opportunities, and the caring environment our school provides.

20. Monday, January 27, 2020—The Syracuse Academy of Science Varsity Cheerleading team competed at the OHSL League competition on Monday, January 27, 2020. The Atoms put on a great performance! Beloved Nicholson was voted by other OHSL coaches as an OHSL First Team All-League All-Star and our Seniors were recognized.

21. Tuesday, January 28, 2020—Our Elementary & Middle School #SASAtoms visited WonderWorks Destiny last week to break out of the classroom and explore the concepts they have been talking about in class, IRL.

22. Wednesday, January 29, 2020—The 2019-2020 Indoor Track and Field Team at Syracuse Academy of Science coached by Irene Thompson competed in the OHSL 2 League Championships at Onondaga Community College and took home some great individual wins and fourth place overall.

23. Wednesday, January 29, 2020—The Syracuse Academy of Science Middle School students put on a wonderful art exhibition full of lively colors and artistic talent. The students showcased their knowledge of The 7 Elements of Art, The 7 Principles of Design, Optical Art, and Grid Art.

24. Wednesday, January 29, 2020—This January, students were celebrated for demonstrating the attribute of fairness. Students were chosen on their ability to show fairness to their peers and teachers. Most improved, citizenship and highest academics were also awarded to students. Teacher of the month recognition was given to Ms. Sasso and Mrs. Cusano who show fairness to everyone on a daily basis. In honor of National School Choice Week, one student per grade level was selected to read their writing piece about what they love about #SASCS.

25. Wednesday, January 29, 2020—One fish, two fish, who drew that fish?! Our second grade Van Goghs visited Painting with a Twist in Dewitt. #SASAtoms created masterpieces of rainbow fish in their natural habitats.

26. Thursday, January 30, 2020—Do you ever wonder what our Atoms are up to? Here is a sneak peek into the sixth and seventh-grade #PBL classroom. Seventh Graders discussed the nesting habits of native birds, and are designing an appropriate nesting box for their chosen bird. The groups will choose a winning "design" and then they will work as a class to build the box and place it in a park. Sixth Graders have been investigating ancient architecture and shared their findings with their peers. Scholars discussed how these ancient buildings were constructed, and how ancient styles can still be seen today.

27. Monday, February 3, 2020—Atoms traveled to Marcellus to practice teamwork skills and get some much-needed exercise after being cooped up in the classroom all winter. Students participated in capture the flag, dodgeball, kickball, and other cooperative games that got Atoms up and moving with their classmates.

SAS Citizenship

1. Tuesday, November 26, 2020—The first graders of 1C visited Hospital Land at Crouse Hospital! With the help of Nurse Jackie, we learned all about going to the hospital, X-Rays, and the fun food choices you have if you stay overnight.

2. Friday, December 20, 2020—We are so thankful for our WONDERFUL students at #SASCCS. The character strengths focused on during the first quarter were: Curiosity, Teamwork, Open-Mindedness, Being present and giving others attention, Integrity, Perspective, and Creativity. These Students did an amazing job of displaying these character traits in and out of the classroom while simultaneously being exceptional scholars.

Fourth-grade Atoms from the Citizenship Academy certainly are #SASCAtoms went to the Museum of Science & Technology - MOST and learned how to make clouds, walked with dinosaurs and scaled a rock wall. Talk about a busy afternoon.

5. Monday, January 13, 2020—You may remember that one of our #SASCAtoms took it upon himself to raise funds for the homeless during the holidays. Well, guess what, he did in a big sort of way. Giancarlo was able to raise $770. He created bags full of items that would be useful to individuals without stable housing. He created 72 bags filled with the following items

Thursday, January 16, 2020 & Friday, January 17, 2020—First and Second-grade Atoms kicked their kinesthetic brain into gear by visiting a school favorite, The Museum of Science and Technology, in downtown Syracuse. Atoms explored exhibits focused on the human body, our magnificent brains, dinosaurs, earth science, different kinds of energy, and toothpick world!

7. Thursday, December 5, 2020 & Tuesday, January 21, 2020—That's a wrap! Over two separate trips this winter, Third-Grade Atoms ventured to the Cazenovia Public Library & Museum to bring their studies to life. Students met a real mummy, named Hen.

8. Monday, February 3, 2020—Atoms jumped right into #BlackHistoryMonth with a visit from members of the Syracuse Police Department for the #28Speakersin28Days speaking tour. Officer Brandon Hanks, Officer Marlena Jackson, Officer Shaquille Muhammed, CSO Officer Nilieka Brown, and Information Aide Lenwand Terry-Brantley engaged with students in Kindergarten through fourth-grade. Officers participated in a group yoga class, read to students, shared insight from what their job is like and the importance of community involvement.

1. Tuesday, November 26, 2020−Do you want to build a snowman? #UASCS First graders definitely did after their field trip to Marquee Cinema to watch Frozen 2. Sometimes it's important to kick back and celebrate hard work with a field trip.

2. Tuesday, January 7, 2020—Watch out folks, the kids are making dinner! #UASAtoms enjoyed a cooking demonstration from our very own Director of Dining Services, Tammy Pittsley, of Chartwells K12. Scholars observed the process of cooking and discussed all the pieces that need to come together in order to make a delicious meal.

3. Wednesday, January 15, 2020—Our Atoms give us all the courage we need to create, learn, grow and discover. The Elementary school recently held an art show for parents and students to actively engage and collaborate on various art pieces. It was such an amazing event, and a true joy to see all of our scholar's artwork come to life.

4. Tuesday, January 21, 2020—There's nothing to WAFFLE about on this one. These #UASAtoms are awesome! December Dojo and student of the month winners at the Elementary School celebrated their hard work with a Waffle Bar Breakfast.

5. Thursday, January 23, 2020—Councilman Delvin J. Moody spoke with Middle School #UASAtoms about his lifelong role within the community and the importance of quality education and embracing leadership opportunities. Thank you, Councilman Moody, for sharing your wisdom and insight with our #UASCS Community!

6. Friday, January 24, 2020—First-grade #UASAtoms spent the afternoon running, dodging, and ducking at Accelerate Sports. These kinesthetic field trips integrate character lessons about sportsmanship and teamwork with the value of play.

7. Friday, January 24, 2020— A rounded education emphasizes the importance of civic engagement. At #UASCS it is a part of our core charter to graduate college-ready and civic-minded students. Two #UASAtoms attended the 15th Annual Legislative Breakfast Forum in Utica, New York. Local elected officials laid out their plans for the upcoming year and answered questions from the audience. Officials who took part in the event included Congressman Rep. Anthony Brindisi Senator Joseph A. Griffo Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr. and Utica Mayor Robert M. Palmieri Herkimer County Legislature Chairman Vincent Bono and Assembly members Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon Assemblyman Brian Miller and Assemblyman Robert Smullen.

8. Monday, January 27, 2020—#UASCS Elementary honored select Atoms during the January Student of the Month ceremony. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our #UASAtoms for their growth with parents and staff.

9. Wednesday, January 29, 2020—Second Grade Atoms rolled over to AMF Pin-O-Rama Lanes for a field trip to learn a little about bowling, a little about sportsmanship, and a lot about fun.

10. Friday, January 31, 2020—Middle School #UASAtoms Celebrate Success during the winter award ceremony. While the staff celebrated student success, our Atoms took a moment to acknowledge a Staff Member of the Month. After careful consideration, our Atoms chose Mr. Velic. Atoms wanted Mr. Velic, the first UAS-MS Employee, to know how much they appreciate his hard work and dedication.

11. Friday, January 31, 2020—Collaboration matters. At Utica Academy of Science, we want to hear from our parents, which is why we host Coffee & Conversations sessions. Our last meeting, held on January 31, served as an opportunity for parents and school administrators to connect. Discussions ranged from utilizing school tool, potential school problems, and community building.

12. Friday, January 31, 2020—The Power of Play. At #UASCS we know that play is absolutely critical to developing confident and thoughtful citizens. In order to provide some hands-on play, Kindergartners took a field trip to Utica Children's Museum.

3. Citizenship HVAC, ceiling, and lighting update project: School is requesting new HVAC system from landlord. School will apply for a grant to support HVAC project up to $200,000 to make it happen this summer. The school would like to updates its ceiling and lighting with energy efficient LED and will get quotes.

1. Saturday, February 1, 2020—The SASCS Middle School carnival was a snow joke. Atoms and their families beat the winter blues by hosting a daytime carnival filled with games, a football throw, face painting, an "Escape the Room" challenge, lollipop pull, photo booth, bounce house, and sumo wrestling.

2. Tuesday, February 4, 2020—How do we support our Atoms in becoming caring and involved citizens? To start, we teach them how the system works. Freshman and sophomore Atoms took a field trip to the Onondaga County Courthouse and Justice Center where they toured the new and old courthouse, witnessed court proceedings, learned about various career opportunities within the court system, and attended a question and answer session with deputies at the justice center.

3. Tuesday, February 4, 2020—The SASCS middle school STEAM club competed in a global art competition revolving around the theme, ‘Endangered.’ Students created both drawings and sculptures of animal species seriously at risk of extinction.

4. Thursday, February 6, 2020—Several of our fourth graders participated in our annual SASCS Geography Bee. These Atoms were a picture of perseverance, courage and hard work portrayed by their immense knowledge of questions that ranged from facts about the United States to multiple continents throughout the world.

5. Thursday, February 6, 2020—The Trophy goes to the kindergarten SASAtoms for having a blast at The Ultimate Goal. Sharks & Minnows, soccer, and musical chairs were just a few of the team games students played. The highlight of the trip for Atoms was definitely jumping from one rug to another while swinging on a rope.

6. Friday, February 7, 2020—At the Syracuse Academy of Science, we believe in celebrating our SASAtoms victories. Throughout the first week of February, we rewarded scholars who earned the highest number of DOJO points in January.

7. Saturday, February 8, 2020—Three SASCS MS teams attended the SUNY Oswego Nor'Easter Robotics Competition. The teams competed in nine qualifying rounds in team-building challenges. After the qualifying rounds, all teams were paired up and competed one more time in the final round. Team Roboquad took 1st place with an impressive 105 points, Team Gear took 5th place and Team Let’s Code came in 10th overall.

8. Monday, February 11, 2020—We believe in preparing our students for their futures with practical support. According to 2018-2028 Employment Projections from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, of the 30 fastest growing occupations, 18 are in healthcare and related occupations. To better help our students understand what opportunities exist for them in the healthcare industry, we took a group of 21 SASCS Juniors to Upstate Medical University to attend a medical careers panel which included twelve professional staff members. The panel shared heartwarming personal stories and great information about potential career paths.

9. Wednesday, February 12, 2020—The SASCS Elementary Health Office is celebrating HealthyHeart Month by teaching our students on ways to keep our hearts healthy.

10. Thursday, February 13, 2020—Kuukua Yomekpe, The Owner and Head Chef of Asempe Kitchen, LLC stopped by Ms. Dickinson and Mr. Scheemaker's first-grade class. Ms. Yomekpe makes and serves Ghanaian cuisine in downtown Syracuse.

11. Thursday, February 13, 2020—Our fourth-grade SASAtoms have been testing and experimenting tirelessly for two months in preparation for their Science Fair. Judges from SUNY-ESF, SRC, Inc., The Tech Garden, The VA Hospital, and other great Syracuse organizations joined us on Thursday, 2/13 to help judge our Atoms Science Fair projects.

12. Thursday, February 13, 2020—We are supporting the next generation of scientific innovators. With parents and teachers by their side, our SASAtoms enjoyed the first-ever STEM night at the SASCS Elementary School.

13. Thursday, February 13, 2020—Stand tall and proud of who you are in this body. You have strength, energy, confidence and beauty to offer the world, and it flows from your head to your toes. Holly Lowery, a representative from Ophelia's Place, presented to SASCS middle school scholars about the importance of body positivity and healthy eating practices.

14. Friday, February 14, 2020—Ms. Figueroa's kindergarten class believes the best way to celebrate American Heart Month is a happy, healthy heart for the ones you love! On Friday, February 14th students celebrated this mentality and transformed into Doctors for the morning to perform "surgery" during their centers time. They worked in groups to treat their "patients" hearts by using skills that they have learned thus far this year.

15. Friday, February 14, 2020—The best gifts are from the heart. 3rd Grade took a field trip to Painting with a Twist where they showcased their artistic abilities and worked on some great pieces for the ones they loved.

16. Friday, February 14, 2020—Some days you gotta dance. Particularly when celebrating the second-quarter success of our SASCS High School Atoms! Atoms received certificates of achievement for Dean's List, High Honor Roll, Honor Roll, and Merit Achievement.

17. Wednesday, February 26, 2020—In celebration of BlackHistoryMonth the owner of Crave Dessert Studio and role model, Tykemia Carman, shared her journey with our first-grade SASAtoms. Tykemia, a graduate of the Syracuse Academy of Science, encouraged our young scholars to dream big and take risks.

18. Wednesday, February 26, 2020—This month's Student of the Month Award Assembly featured a special performance from our very own Step Team in honor of BlackHistoryMonth. The performance included a step, a brief introduction about the importance of Black History Month, and highlighted influential leaders such as Rosa Parks.

19. Wednesday, February 26, 2020—A group of SAS Seniors traveled to OCM B.O.C.E.S. for an information session and a tour of the facility led by Adult & Continuing Education Coordinator Matt Tarolli. Students were informed of the various trade programs available on campus, and they were able to get a grasp of a handful of the programs by visiting classrooms and workshops.

20. Thursday, February 27, 2020—Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School Atoms donated six bags of gently used coats to the Syracuse Rescue Mission to help other children in need. Thank you to all of our community members who helped make this coat drive such a success.

21. Thursday, February 27, 2020—Second-grade Atoms raced, competed, laughed and learned during their field trip to Ultimate Goal. Students participated in many team-oriented games and activities, with a focus on working together, physical activity and FUN!

22. Friday, February 28, 2020—In celebration of Black History Month, first graders spent time with News Channel 9 anchor Jennifer Sanders! She spent some time with us explaining that she doesn't only share news on TV, but she also plays many roles behind the scenes.

23. Friday, February 28, 2020—Scholars from 8th and 9th grade attended a presentation by Jerome Walker from 100 Black Men Of America, Inc.. His presentation uncovered truths regarding Black History Month and why it's celebrated in the month of February.

24. Friday, February 28, 2020—It's ReadAcrossAmerica week! The middle school kicked off the celebrations last Friday by celebrating Dr. Seuss’ (belated) birthday!

25. Saturday, February 29, 2020—The SASCS High School Robotics Team won big this weekend at the FIRST Tech Challenge Clarkson University Qualifying Tournament. Our Atoms won their first F I V E matches of the day. Although they fell short in the final match, our SASAtoms robotics team achieved the Second Alliance Captain Award and the Best Design Award at the competition. Junior Umesh Dahal was honored for his Dean's List status as well.

5. Monday, February 11, 2020—NBC Channel 3 News Journalist Melanie Johnson spoke with our 4th graders about her journey to becoming a news anchor in celebration of BlackHistoryMonth.

6. Tuesday, February 11, 2020—Local film director Tyrone Jackson spoke with third-grade students about dedication and what it takes to be a film director. Jackson highlighted the importance of looking at things from many different perspectives in order to have the best shot (and not just in movies) but in School, College, and life.

Walmart Store Manager and SANY Alumnus '11, Tyler Wilson, stopped by SASCCS for BlackHistoryMonth. Wilson emphasized the importance and power of positive thinking and dedication.

12. Friday, February 14, 2020—Syracuse Academy of Science Alumna '16 & Cazenovia College Senior, Prenajuah Jefferson, imparted wisdom upon our Atoms about the importance of making the right choices through school, life, and college. Our students were enthralled by her story.

13. Monday, February 24, 2020—Gabrielle Lloyd, owner of local hair salon Gypsy Glam, came by SASCCS to speak with our students about the journey of owning and running her own business. Gabrielle spoke to the importance of self-confidence and finding work you love. Our students were able to get a live demonstration of her craft.

14. Monday, February 24, 2020—Hofstra University Alumnus and Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School Boys Basketball Coach, Cornelius Vines, spoke with Citizenship Academy Atoms about the value of passion and excitement.

15. Monday, February 24, 2020—Clifford Ryan, who spearheads OG’s Against Gun Violence, came by Citizenship Academy to talk with students about the philosophy of nonviolence.

16. Tuesday, February 25, 2020—The Citizenship Academy Winter Concert was hands-down one of our best events yet! So many parents, friends, and family members came out to support our young scholars. It was an incredible thing to behold.

17. Tuesday, February 25, 2020—In celebration of BlackHistoryMonth, Tykemia Carman, the owner of Crave Dessert Studio in Syracuse and a role model, shared her successful journey with our SASCAtoms.

Wednesday, February 26, 2020—Citizenship Academy scholars welcomed powerful guest speaker Dr. Mark Muhammed, who enthusiastically spoke to them about the importance of having many college options to help them achieve their future goals, as well as developing the stamina and aptitude needed for taking tests.

19. Wednesday, February 26, 2020—Former NFL Player Will Hunter came to Citizenship Academy as an amazing guest speaker for our Atoms. He spoke with our students about his experiences in school and college, and what it takes to be a professional athlete. Mr. Hunter explained what dedication is, and he stressed the importance of being dedicated to what you are doing--no matter what you are doing.

20. Thursday, February 27, 2020—Deputy Mayor of Syracuse Sharon Owens visited Citizenship Academy as a special guest speaker during our series of 28 Speakers in 28 Days. Deputy Mayor Owens spoke with our 1st graders about her important job leading the City of Syracuse as well as what she has learned through her experiences in life and college.

21. Friday, February 28, 2020—Shadayvia Wallace, valedictorian of SANY Class of 2011 and a LeMoyne College Student Affairs professional, was a welcome guest speaker recently at Citizenship Academy. Ms. Wallace shared valuable information about the importance of doing extracurricular activities while attending college, as well as what college life is like.

22. Friday, February 28, 2020—Citizenship Academy students were invited to envision their futures when Rasheeda Caldwell of Peace Incorporated and the Let Me Be Great movement spoke as a guest speaker.

23. Friday, February 28, 2020—Wanda Hines McGriff of the New York Department of Mental Health was invited by the Citizenship Academy to be a guest speaker. Mrs.McGriff talked with students about her own experiences as a student in school as well as her daily job routine working for New York State.

24. Friday, February 28, 2020—Fire safety was the primary topic of Syracuse Fire Department Chief Monds when he served as a guest speaker at Citizenship Academy. He also shared memorable life experiences, including the process he went through to become a fireman and a fire chief.

UAS

1. Monday, February 3, 2020—It's a race to the Golden Sneaker Award! In all UASCS Elementary Physical Education classes, students are working as a team to achieve the Golden Sneaker Award. The Golden Sneaker Award goes to the grade level classes that earn the most points as a team. Each class can earn up to five points a class. This award started this January and will be given out monthly to those that show great cooperation, effort, participation, attitude, and preparation.

2. Wednesday, February 12, 2020—Our Atoms may be booked solid with winter vacation plans this week, but we can't stop ourselves from sharing pics from their most recent field trip to the Utica Public Library. First-grade UASAtoms explored the library, set up their library cards, and enjoyed a Pete The Cat storytime.

3. Saturday, February 15, 2020—Utica Academy of Science Charter School is now accepting applications for the 2020-2021 school year. As a part of our school promotional events, school staff and alumni organized a table and digital display event at the Sangertown Square Mall.

4. Monday, February 25, 2020—We love celebrating student success. This week UASCS Elementary Atoms were celebrated for their "Student of the Month" status. Scholars were recognized for their hard work and persistent effort.

5. Wednesday, February 26, 2020—UAS Elementary School atoms, staff and parents came together at a very meaningful assembly that celebrated Black History Month.

6. Thursday, February 27, 2020—UAS high school scholars had an amazing experience at this year’s annual Black History Month ceremony.

7. Friday, February 28, 2020—UASCS middle school hosted an American Heart Association’s Pie-in-the-Face Event at a school assembly.

9. Friday, February 28, 2020—UAS middle school held its 7th Annual Science Fair. Students spent a lot of time preparing their projects. First, they had to develop a hypothesis, then conduct an experiment and collect data to present their findings to judges invited from local colleges such as MVCC and SUNY POLY Institute.

10. Sunday, March 1, 2020—Our students joined local Bosnians in the community as they raised the Bosnian flag at Utica City Hall in celebration of Bosnian Independence Day.
