I.Superintendent’s Report
SAS
1.) Tuesday, November 30th, 2021—Syracuse Academy of Science Charter Schools is proud to, 'Say Yes to Education! Syracuse is a nonprofit community-wide partnership with the goal of every public school student not only graduating high school -- but doing so with the preparation and support to attain, afford, and complete a college or other post-secondary education. This organization supports students and their families on the path to high school graduation — with a goal of their being prepared for post-secondary education, and being able to afford its expenses. The Syracuse Academy of Science high school students had an opportunity to learn more about the Say Yes to Education program and which colleges would be funded through the program. Atoms also learned what makes them eligible to become a Say Yes member and how to complete the application process.
2.) Wednesday, December 1st, 2021—Last week, Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school hosted its winter Scholastic Book Fair where families had an opportunity to peruse exclusive titles, new releases, discover value packs and so much more. Each purchase made at the Book Fair benefited Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school. We would like to take this time to thank everyone who helped make this event possible and the families who attended this event. Thank you for helping share and develop the love of reading with your Atoms!
3.) Saturday, December 4th, 2021—On this ‘Giving Tuesday,’ we would like to shine the spotlight on a select group of students at Syracuse Academy of Science high school. These students are a part of the Congressional Awards Program and dedicate a portion of their weekend to help serve the greater Syracuse community. Last weekend, Atoms put their love into action by lending a helping hand when visiting the Rescue Mission’s Thrifty Shopper store. Throughout the day, Atoms volunteered their time and service to assist wherever there was a need. Their volunteer hours work towards their community service goal as part of the Congressional Awards Program. Keep up the great work, Atoms! You are making an incredible difference in the community.
4.) Tuesday, December 7th, 2021—As the Syracuse Academy of Science High School seniors prepare to start their college application process families had an opportunity to learn about the Financial Aid process from Le Moyne College's Director of Financial Aid. During the presentation, families learned about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or more commonly referred to at FAFSA. Many colleges and universities use the FAFSA form to determine the applicant's federal aid eligibility. Many states and colleges use FAFSA data to award their own aid, as well.
5.) Friday, December 10th, 2021—Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school makes it a December to remember with their annual Door Decorating contest. This year, classrooms were tasked with coming up with their own theme and of course decorating their door. Let’s just say the creativity was ‘otter this world,’ and left you walking in a winter wonderland. Congratulations to Ms. Figueroa's kindergarten class for being named the 2021 Door Decorating Contest winner, with their door theme of Learning in a Winter Wonderland.
6.) Sunday, December 12th, 2021—Last weekend Mr. Yaman's Congressional Awards students headed out to the greater Syracuse community to not only lend a hand but to ultimately make a difference (and an impact) this holiday season to over 200 families at the Blessing Box CNY Food Distribution event - a local organization aimed to help fight hunger. During the event, Atoms helped sort various household items, non-perishable food items, personal hygiene products, hats, and mittens into boxes and bags for those in need to pick up and take with them. Thank you Atoms for helping make a difference in our community. Keep up the great work, and we look to continue hearing (and seeing) the ways you have made an impact in serving the greater Syracuse community.
7.) Tuesday, December 14th, 2021—Earlier this month, Syracuse Academy of Science high school students had an opportunity to learn about a local college that is ranked 2nd on Princeton Review’s list of ‘Green Colleges,’ and 3rd on Sierra Magazine’s ‘Cool Schools’ list. This school is none other than, SUNY ESF! A SUNY ESF recruiting team member shared with the Atoms about the variety of degree programs offered, as well as some pretty special perks of being a ‘Mighty Oak.’ One of these perks is that SUNY ESF students can take classes, use library and computing facilities, join clubs and eat in the dining halls at Syracuse University. During this college visit, Atoms also had an opportunity to do an on-site application review with the SUNY ESF recruiting team member. We would like to take this time to thank the SUNY ESF recruiting team for taking time out of their schedules to visit Syracuse Academy of Science high school and speak with the Atoms!
8.) Wednesday, December 15th, 2021—Our hearts are so full of kindness and generosity from the Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School community members. On this ‘giving Tuesday,’ we wanted to share how one family and one Food Service Director helped give the gift of warmth this holiday season. Last Wednesday, a family in Ms. Fogarty's class donated hats and gloves for all the students in that class! These kind gifts and gestures will go a long way especially as we get ready for colder months ahead. But wait, that's not all the kindness and generosity that continues. Last Friday, the Food Service Director of Chartwells, Ms. Pittsley, hosted a Hat & Glove Giveaway. This year, Chartwells generously donated hats and gloves to the K-12 students across the district!!! Our hearts are so full of all this kindness, generosity, and thoughtfulness. Our students and families cannot thank you all enough for the hats and gloves, especially during these colder months. Thank you all again for your kindness and generosity!
9.) Tuesday, December 21st, 2021—The week leading up to Winter Recess, the Syracuse Academy of Science middle school students, teachers, faculty, and staff dressed in their decade’s best for their spirit day celebration. For their spirit day theme of decade day, Atoms could dress in the following years: 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, or 90’s. In true Atoms fashion, they were all so hip and cool! Click here to visit our Facebook page to view more pictures from this event. We hope all of our students, teachers, faculty, and staff have a happy, healthy, and safe Winter Recess.
10.) Tuesday, December 21st, 2021—Throughout the year, Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school students have been exploring and learning about the various traditions, customs, and protocols for winter holidays around the world. Some of the holidays they learned about include (and are not limited to): St. Lucia Day, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Boxing Day, Día de Los Muertos, Christmas, and Chinese New Year.

1.) Tuesday, November 23rd, 2021—We're about ready to drop a beat on all the fun and exciting musical activities and adventures the Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school students had during the month of November. As we all know the Atoms certainly have rhythm, but they are also incredibly creative. Check it out! In November, the Atoms were working on learning various rhythms and instruments and of course musical games. The Kindergarten students were busy learning how to play the egg shaker percussion instrument, and to figure out comparatives in music like is this the same/different, is this slow/fast or is this loud/soft. In grades 1st - 6th, the Atoms put their heads together to determine the rhythmic notation for songs they learned in their music class. For this exercise, students were guided through a familiar song and looked at the rhythm notation (Ta, Ti-Ti, or Sh) to practice their music reading and writing skills. Keep those rhythms going and creative juices flowing. Nice work Atoms!
2.) Monday, November 29th, 2021—Our hearts are so full of all the kindness shared by the Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school Atoms this past week! Last week, Atoms learned about the character strength of Kindness. As defined by The Positivity Project, showing kindness towards yourself and one another means that you are generous to others and never too busy to help out. Showing kindness also means that you enjoy doing good deeds for other people. Throughout the week, Atoms have participated in various hands-on, minds-on activities that incorporate the character strength of kindness, and have reflected on how they have shown kindness and have been kind to others in the past. In the 2nd grade, students shared what kindness meant to them, and how they can spread kindness. They wrote their thoughts and ideas on a post-it note and added it to their 'Kindness Wall.' The Kindness Wall will be on full display all year to remind students to show kindness towards one another. In addition to the 2nd-grade Atoms, Atoms have been practicing random acts of kindness in their classrooms by picking up their toys, trash, and giving encouraging words to their fellow classmates. Students celebrated the week-long discussion of the character strength of Kindness by drawing a picture of ways they could light up the world with kindness.
3.) Tuesday, November 30th, 2021—You’re a wizard, Atoms! While the 2nd-grade Atoms at Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school may (or may not have) received their ‘official’ letter to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, we can solemnly say that the Atoms are certainly up to some good. Each day the students that demonstrate the Positivity Project’s weekly character strengths and follow their 'house rules,' will be awarded the honor of being named the Wizard of the Day! Congratulations, Atoms and keep up the great work! And just remember what the wise Sorting Hat mentioned, "In wise old Ravenclaw if you have a ready mind… those of wit and learning will always find their kind."
4.) Thursday, December 4th, 2021—Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship 4th grade student, A'Don represented the Atoms this past weekend at the American Youth Football 'Road to Nationals' tournament (aka the Super Bowl) in Orlando, Florida! We are very proud of our young student-athlete, A'Don who has competed with his team, the Salt City Renegades, all over New York state and the East Coast. We wish A'Don and the Salt City Renegades the best of luck in their Nationals tournament!
5.) Tuesday, December 7th, 2021—Do you want to hear something sweet? Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school students practice writing letters of the alphabet using candy canes! This holiday-inspired activity is the perfect combination of sweet and practical as the students are given a flashcard with a letter of the alphabet on it, and they are tasked to write using their candy cane, in a bin of oatmeal, their letter. Now this gives creative writing a whole new meaning!

1.) Friday, December 3rd, 2021—Anywhere the wind blows doesn’t really matter to us as long as the Utica Academy of Science Atoms are there! The students in Ms. Winter’s science class were busy going green and learning all about the various forms of energy. For their science project, students were tasked with creating a backup electrical system that would be able to function in the event of a blackout. The Atoms decided the best backup source of energy would be wind energy. Students would then be tasked with not only creating but testing out their very own wind turbines. Everyone had a great time designing and testing out their wind turbines. Keep up the great work, Atoms!
2.) Saturday, December 4th, 2021—Earlier this month, laced up their basketball shoes and headed down the road to pay a visit to a sister school, Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School for a winner take all basketball game. The Atoms vs. Atoms boys basketball game is a time-honored tradition for SANY, and the winning team will have the chance to take home the Superintendent’s Trophy and proudly display it for a full school year. In true Utica fashion, the Atoms put the pressure on and dominated the court. Freshman guard, Doneilous King Jr. led his team with 31 points, and Wol Machteng had 11 points (and a thunderous drop step dunk on 3 of the Syracuse Academy of Science Atoms players). Congratulations to the Utica Academy of Science Atoms for winning the 2021 Superintendents Trophy!
3.) Tuesday, December 7th, 2021—‘Tis the season to sparkle! Atoms put their creativity into action when designing their very own homemade paper snow globes. These snow globes are true original masterpieces that were designed with love and of course some glitter. Way to spread a little holiday cheer this time of year, Atoms!
4.) Wednesday, December 8th, 2021—We believe that learning should always be fun, and in Ms. Salem’s kindergarten ENL class, fun is certainly not in short supply! Each day, students are provided support, challenges, and opportunities to instill all the necessary skills. Atoms develop various language skills through a variety of hands-on, mind-on activities, games, and exercises. These important skills will allow the students to become successful and thrive throughout their educational careers.
5.) Wednesday, December 8th, 2021—It's official, the Utica Academy of Science boys basketball team is UNDEFEATED! Earlier this week, Utica Academy of Science boys basketball took it to the net and scored BIG against their rivals Cooperstown Hawkeyes! With a score of 92-13, the Atoms continue their record of 3-0. During the game on Wednesday, December 8th, five of the players reached double-digits in scoring for the Atoms including Jazier Brown who led the team with 18 points. P.J. Kiuber led the Hawkeyes with 6 points. Congratulations, Atoms and keep making those 'swishes' come true!
6.) Friday, December 10th, 2021—Earlier this month, the Utica Academy of Science junior-senior high school ENL students embarked on a field trip to the Capital Region where they learned all about the history of New York state. Their first stop of the field trip included visiting the oldest and largest state museum in the country, the New York State Museum. During their visit, students learned about the art, science, and human/natural history of the state. Some of the exhibits they saw included: ice ages, Cohoes Mastodon, birds of New York, and Adirondack Wilderness. No field trip is ever complete without visiting the Capital Region’s premier destination, Crossgates Mall where the students grabbed a bite to eat and did some shopping. What a fun, memorable and educational learning experience!
7.) Wednesday, December 15th, 2021—Utica Academy of Science junior-senior high school celebrates the holiday season with its time-honored tradition of writing letters to elderly citizens in the community. This activity not only puts a smile on the faces of those who receive the letter but those who are writing them, as well. Way to go Atoms, for making this a December to remember!
8.) Monday, December 20th, 2021—There is certainly no room for ‘bah humbug’ around these festive holiday sweaters! As the Utica Academy of Science elementary school students kick-off the start of Winter Recess, the Atoms had an opportunity to wear their favorite ugly, funny, or whimsical holiday sweater. Let’s just say the students, teachers, faculty, and staff were all feeling fab-YULE-ous as they brought joy, laughter, and a bit of holiday cheer to everyone they saw. Click here to view more pictures from the ugly sweater day at Utica Academy of Science elementary school. We hope all of our students, teachers, faculty, and staff are enjoying their Winter Recess. Happy holidays, Atoms!
9.) Tuesday, December 21st, 2021—As we get ready to welcome back the Atoms tomorrow, we wanted to share one last bit of holiday cheer and celebrations just before Winter Recess! The week of Winter Recess, Utica Academy of Science elementary school students had an opportunity to wear pajamas to school, as it was going to be 'Polar Express Day!' Much like the book and the movie, the characters all wore their pajamas as they climbed aboard a train that brought them to the North Pole. For this festive day, each student received a special round trip ticket for the Polar Express, and of course hot chocolate and cookies. During the day, the Atoms received a surprise visitor from the North Pole, who even took some pictures with the students. This mini celebration was a great way to get everyone pumped and excited for their upcoming Winter Recess. We hope all of our students found time to rest and relax this past week. We look forward to seeing you bright and early tomorrow morning! Please click here to view more pictures from this festive event.
10.) Tuesday, December 21st, 2021—“The best way to spread holiday cheer is singing loudly for all to hear!” - Elf Earlier this month, the Utica Academy of Science elementary school Atoms was busy preparing for their annual Holiday Concert. Each grade dressed in various themes from holiday colors of red, white, and green, to even the ever-popular 'ugly sweaters.' During the Holiday Concert, guests heard musical stylings from the Atoms, a special drumline performance, and of course singing and dancing. What made this performance different from previous years, is that this concert would be held at the famous historic Stanley Theater with their names in lights on the marquee! While pre-concert jitters may have been among not only the students but teachers alike, the Atoms certainly rocked the house and there was certainly holiday cheer, laughter, and merriment to be had everywhere in the building. We would like to take this moment to thank everyone who helped make this event possible, and for all the students and their families who attended the performance - thank you for your patronage and supporting the Atoms and the arts! Please click here to visit our Facebook page to view more pictures from the 2021 Utica Academy of Science elementary school Holiday Concert! We hope all of our Atoms and their families are having a very happy holiday and a safe Winter Recess!
11.) Tuesday, December 21st, 2021—Congratulations to Coach Lee, his staff, and of course the Utica Academy of Science boys basketball team for being ranked 2nd in the Class B Division. Atoms were also ranked 1st in their league with a record of 8-1. Last night, the Atoms took on Tamarac and lost with a score of 64-57. However, Najalique Taylor was selected as the player of the game! We are very proud of you and look forward to seeing and hearing about another great and successful basketball season. Make sure to check out Utica Academy of Science junior-senior high school's upcoming basketball schedule and come out and cheer on the Atoms!
12.) Wednesday, December 22nd, 2021—The week of Winter Recess, Utica Academy of Science elementary school spread a little ‘holiday cheer’ by creating an in-school snow day on the half-day of school. Throughout the day the students participated in a variety of creative, hands-on activities, games, and activities that were holiday and winter-themed. From decorating cookies to trying their luck at constructing gingerbread houses made out of graham crackers, to playing reindeer games (quite literally), to even letting their sillies out by playing in the school gymnasium. It is safe to say that this in-school snow day will most certainly be going down in history, much like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer! We hope all of our students are enjoying their Winter Recess, and we look forward to seeing them next week.
13.) Wednesday, December 22nd, 2021—The Wednesday before Winter Recess, Utica Academy of Science junior-senior high school teachers, faculty, joined in a little holiday fun for their team bonding event. During their event, everyone had an opportunity to try delectable dishes from all around the world, and hopefully, they saved room for dessert, as there were many sweet treats in all shapes, sizes, and of course flavors. Thank you to everyone who helped make this event possible.
14.) Thursday, December 30th, 2021—Slam Dunk! Utica Academy of Science Boys Basketball was featured in the Observer-Dispatch for their impressive season thus far, and how in just 5 short years, they have become a force to be reckoned with on the court. https://www.uticaod.com/story/sports/high-school/2021/12/30/utica-academy-science-boys-basketball-ranked-number-1-poll/9050114002/

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2021—Winter Recess may have been just around the corner, but the Syracuse Academy of Science 7th grade Atoms said, ‘but first, let’s go ice skating!’ The Atoms braved the winter elements on their recent field trip to the Clinton Square Ice Rink where teamwork, positivity, and resilience were on full display. For many of the students, this was their first time ever ice skating. In true Atoms fashion, they helped one another find or regain their balance both on and off the ice, and of course were always there to lend a helping hand in case anyone fell. By the end of this outdoor excursion, the students were certainly skating like professionals. We may have even noticed a few spin moves here and there! Please click here to visit our Facebook page to view more pictures from the 7th grade Syracuse Academy of Science middle school Atoms' field trip to the Clinton Square Ice Rink.

SAS Citizenship
Friday, December 3rd, 2021—In early December, Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship 5th and 6th grade students were taught a very valuable life lesson about the importance of perspective and empathy. For this class group project, students were given a shoe which represented a person, and its situation. The students were then tasked with coming up with not only a perspective for the situation, but how to empathize with the person (or shoe in this matter) would feel. The Atoms quickly learned that perspective is the ability to see a situation from another person’s viewpoint, while empathy is the ability to understand how someone is feeling. What a creative lesson, and opportunity for the students to understand and learn two important skills - perspective and empathy. Keep up the great work, Atoms!
2. Tuesday, December 14th, 2021—With the holidays right around the corner, Mrs. Morehouse from Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school would like to share some helpful tips and tricks on how to take deep 'belly breaths' to relax. This time of year can be very stressful for many people, including our Atoms! One coping mechanism we use at school is belly breathing - a technique where we take deep breaths in and make our belly expand like a balloon, and then we blow out our mouth like we are blowing out a candle. Taking deep belly breaths involves more muscles than taking a shallow breath into our chest. Due to belly breathing, our bodies can't respond to the "fight or flight" response that stress and anxiety may produce. Check out one of our Atoms modeling how belly breathing works! Notice the little pink spot moving up as she breathes into her belly and down as she breathes out. Some ways we do this at school is by using Little Spot Breathing Tricks! When students feel like they are getting upset, or when an adult notices them upset, they begin making circles in the palm of their hand and counting to 10, once they get to ten they take a deep belly breath. They do this until they feel they are regulated enough to talk or go back to class. Our goal is to get them to take three deep belly breaths. Check out our other hand-breathing tricks, and try them at home!
3. Wednesday, December 15th, 2021—Earlier this month, Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship 6th grade students had an opportunity to practice their leadership skills in the school club, Student Council. Student Council is a great way for students to get involved not only in their school community but the greater Syracuse community, as well. Students who participate in Student Council will have a chance to practice their leadership skills, as well as, become involved in school improvement projects, community engagement activities, and civic awareness initiatives. We look forward to seeing how these students will help make a difference not only in our school community, but the greater Syracuse community and beyond!
4. Thursday, December 16th, 2021—Our hearts are so full by the kindness and generosity of Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school’s food service company, Chartwells. Earlier this month, Chartwells donated hats and gloves for every student at Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school. This special gift will go a long way with the winter months just ahead. Thank you again, Chartwells for your kindness, generosity and thoughtfulness. Our students and their families cannot thank you enough for the hats and gloves especially as the snow starts to fly. Thank you, so much!
5. Thursday, December 16th, 2021—The week before Winter Recess, Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school decked the building with lights, holiday decorations, glitz and glam for their annual Winter Wonderland drive-thru event. During this event, guests would have an opportunity to waive hi to their teachers, as well as, donate non-perishable food items to their Canned Food Drive benefiting the Food Bank of Central New York. Last year, the Atoms made a sizable donation of 560 lbs. of canned goods, and we are hopeful that this year we surpassed that amount. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped make this event possible, and all those who were able to attend.
6. Friday, December 17th, 2021—Every morning, Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship kindergarten students begin their day developing and working on their fine motor skills. To do this, students select one of the ‘morning tubs’ which contain games, activities and items for them to use that focus on strengthening their hands and muscles. Some of the items in the tubs include: tweezers, take apart cubes, roll play dough, and manipulative puzzle blocks. By working on their fine motor skills, students will be able to practice better handwriting and scissor skills.
7. Monday, December 20th, 2021—The week of Winter Recess, the 2nd grade Atoms at Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school have been mastering the four steps of the writing process which include: planning, drafting, writing and publishing. For this assignment, Atoms were tasked with writing their first personal narrative in which each student would pick an event in their life that was important to them. To start out, the students made a plan of what they would write about, their list of characters, a setting, and finally a plot. Their plan was then turned into a draft. Pretty soon it looks like we'll have some published authors on our hands. Keep up the great work, Atoms!
8. Tuesday, December 21st, 2021—On an equally snowy day like today, the Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school students conducted their own snow-themed STEM activity after reading the story, ‘The Snowy Day,’ by Ezra Jack Keats. The story is about a little boy named Peter and his great outdoor adventure in the snow. For the STEM activity, the Atoms made their very own snow. The students mixed equal parts baking soda with shaving cream for this experiment and observed its chemical reaction. Many students noticed how cold this mixture felt, similar to snow. What a fun and exciting STEM activity!
9. Monday, December 22nd, 2021—The day before Holiday Recess, Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school 2nd-grade students threw a little glitter in the air and put their creativity to the test when decorating an ornament. Each student received an ornament to decorate and a picture of themselves to use however they saw the best fit. Many students decided to hang their ornaments on their tree or in their room, while others wanted to give their special decoration as a gift to someone in their life.
10. Monday, January 3rd, 2022—Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school has teamed up with Read to Them, an organization that encourages and enable reading together at home, and has sent home with each of the Atoms a copy of the classic children's novel, Mr. Popper's Penguins. This beloved story is about the adventures of a house painter and his brood of high-stepping penguins that have delighted children for generations. Each night, students will receive a digital chapter of the book read by a staff member along with a few trivia questions. We invite you to listen, read, and enjoy with your Atoms the adventure of Mr. Popper and his lovable penguins.
11. Wednesday, January 12th, 2022—Throughout December, the Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school Atoms, teachers, faculty, and staff put positivity in action by working together to 'stick a fork in hunger.' The Atoms hosted a canned food drive benefiting the Food Bank of Central New York. In 2020, the Atoms set a record of donating 560 pounds of non-perishable food items to the Food Bank of Central New York. Today, we are excited to share that the Atoms have nearly tripled their record with an impressive donation of 2,147 pounds of non-perishable food items donated to the Food Bank of Central New York. These items will help make a difference to many families in need. At this time, we would like to thank everyone who helped make this event possible and for all the students, teachers, faculty, and staff who contributed to this impressive donation. Way to go, Atoms; we are so proud of you. Together we CAN do this!
12. Monday, January 18th, 2022—This week, the Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship 4th-grade Atoms in Mrs. Youker’s class learned about the hiring process through a hands-on activity. For this event, Mrs. Youker created a mini winter job fair complete with various classroom positions that needed hiring. Students were tasked with reading the job descriptions completing and submitting an application for one of the positions. Like any hiring process, Atoms were called for an interview if their qualifications met the job requirements. Following all the interviews, the students found out if they received the job. Congratulations, Atoms, on your new classroom positions!
13. Thursday, January 20th, 2022—From Zeus to Ares, to Athena, to Poseidon, there are many famous Greek Gods and Goddesses. But which one would be the best ally? Let’s find out! Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school’s 6th-grade ELA students held a friendly debate to determine which famous Greek God or Goddess would be the best ally. While the jury is still out, the Atoms certainly had a blast stepping back into time to learn about ancient Greece.
14. Thursday, January 20th, 2022—Earlier this month, the Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school students learned about the Positivity Project’s character strength of perseverance and the importance of never giving up. Putting their ‘positivity in action,’ the 2nd-grade students were given a fun team building challenge to construct a tower using only paper, tape, and some glue. Atoms quickly rolled up their sleeves, got to work, and soon realized this would be more challenging than they anticipated. As the paper towers continued to fall, the Atoms spirits never diminished, never gave up, and remained cheerful throughout this entire experience. This fun exercise was a great reminder of not only the importance of working together as a team but always to persevere and never to give up.
15. Friday, January 21st, 2022—Persuade, inform, entertain, explain, or describe. Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship 5th-grade Atoms flex their author’s purpose skills with a hands-on, minds-on reading activity. For this game, students work together to sort book titles into various categories of the author’s purpose. However, this game has a slight catch - the Atoms would have to race against Miss Edgar! In true Atoms fashion, the students won and are now experts in determining the author’s purpose of many books.
16. Friday, January 28th, 2022—Every season has a journey and last Friday was an adventure with the students in 2B at Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school. 3. Monday, January 10th, 2022—Utica Academy of Science 4th grade students in Mrs. Winter's class put their creativity to work to help make a difference and impact in the lives of thousands of people in Uganda by hosting a 'Shoe Party' on National 4th Graders day! The shoe party will benefit the non profit organization, Sole Hope who helps restore the health, and hope of the citizens in Uganda by using jeans and turning them into shoes to help prevent jigger infestation for the people who wear them. For those not familiar with jiggers, thousands of vulnerable people in Uganda suffer from this crippling parasite. In fact, Jiggers keep kids from going to school, running, and playing. They prevent people from walking and working. During the shoe party, the Atoms played a vital role in preparing the shoes by cutting out shoe pattern from an old pair of jeans. From here, the fabric will be used to finish the handcrafted shoes in Uganda and will allow the citizens to protect their feet from the harsh conditions. Each year, Sole Hope handcrafts roughly 11,000 shoes, and with the help of the Atoms they are just one step closer! What an inspiring story, Atoms - way to make a great difference and impact in the world!

Wednesday, January 26th, 2022—Empathy is the ability to understand how another person may be feeling and the ability to place yourself in their situation. And empathy is an important life lesson to learn, one in which the Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school students in Mrs. Badman and Ms. Diorio's class worked on with Mrs. Morehouse. Teachers applied a hands-on, minds-on approach to teaching the students about empathy. For their activity, students were given a scenario and had to develop a solution that kept their classmates' feelings and perspectives in mind. Atoms decorated a winter moose and shared something no one knew about them following this activity.
2. Monday, January 31st, 2022—There are so many emotions, and identifying them can be hard work. Thankfully Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship first-grade students are 'emotion detective experts,' as they learned about various emotions and how to identify feelings through facial expression, body language, and words. To become emotion detective experts, students read the story, 'A Little Spot of Feelings: Emotion Detective,' by Diane Alber. This story discusses eight different feeling spots: peaceful, happy, angry, loved, anxious, sad, confident, and scribble (confused). Atoms carefully looked at each of the spots and identified how they were feeling by looking at the spots' facial expressions and body language. With this new set of knowledge, the Atoms became emotion detectives by playing Hedbanz. Students had to help their classmates guess which emotion they had on their headband by using facial expressions and body language. Keep up the great work, Atoms!
3. Thursday, February 3rd, 2022—Who says that science can’t be creative? The 3rd-grade Atoms at Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school are learning about the importance and significance of the genetic makeup of animals. For their science experiment, students teamed up for their hands-on, minds-on science project to decipher, translate, and make an animal using modeling clay correlated to the genetic code. Not only did this allow for the students to unleash their creativity but they were also able to practice their teamwork and interpersonal skills.
4. Monday, February 7th, 2022—The Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school students in 2A have worked hard on their persuasive letter writing and are here to share a few tidbits of information. The keys to success when writing a persuasive letter must include the following elements. First, a strong topic followed by three reasons to convince someone of something you want them to do.
5. Monday, February 7th, 2022—This month, Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school kicked off its annual 28 Speakers in 28 Days event. 10. Wednesday, March 2nd, 2022—Oh, the Places You'll Go with the Syracuse Academy of Science middle school Atoms ... especially on National Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss' birthday! To celebrate, the Atoms listened to classic Dr. Seuss tales and drew inspiration from the stories as they participated in STEM-related Seussical activities. Upon reading the timeless tale, "Horton Hears a Who," the 5th-grade students drew inspiration from Horton as they participated in the STEM Egg-Drop challenge. Like Horton, the students were to design a device that would protect their egg when dropped at multiple heights. As we know in the Cat in the Hat, the Cat was fond of stacking many items to see how high he could go before they all fell. Inspired, the 6th-grade Atoms rose to challenge to stack cups as high as they could go without making them fall. Meanwhile, the 7th-grade students listened to the timeless tale, "Oh the Places You'll Go," and had a meaningful discussion about their journey to come. Students also created parachutes to let their dreams fly high. In addition to these Seussical STEM-inspired activities, Atoms listened to the story, "The Lorax," which has a central theme of respecting our environment and the creatures within it. Students were tasked with using their imagination, creativity, and problem-solving skills when given the hypothetical role of managers of a 400-acre forest. This activity allowed the Atoms to understand the impact of decisions about forest lands. Not to be outdone, the Project-Based Learning (PBL) students celebrated National Read Across America & Dr. Seuss' birthday by creating mini-games or activities associated with their respective Dr. Seuss book.

12.Tuesday, April 12th, 2022—Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school students in 3B put their creativity to the test in their recent science lesson about genetics. In their science class, students learned about genes, DNA, the differences/similarities in traits between species, their offspring, and how characteristics can form. The Atoms took what they learned in their science lesson and applied it to a hands-on, minds-on STEM project, where students were tasked with discussing what an offspring may look like after observing the parents' distinct traits. For the STEM project, each student received a guide with instructions and symbols for each of the parents. Atoms would then find the symbol for each parent and match it with the trait in their activity book. These traits include body color, eye color, horn size, mouth size, tail size, and overall color. Once completed, the Atoms used this information to construct clay creatures. The students quickly realized that even though their creatures were not identical, they had inherited similarities and differences that matched their creature's parents.

4. Wednesday, March 23rd, 2022—Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school students rolled up their sleeves and avoided all sticky messes and situations with this hands-on, minds-on STEM activity. For this science unit, the Atoms used their creativity to become engineers to design a ‘new’ glue for the school to use. First, the students investigated two 'mystery glues' to determine what properties they liked and didn't like. Next, the Atoms analyzed and recorded the properties of the glue. These properties included: texture, sound, and smell. As engineers and scientists, students smelled the glue from a distance using the 'wafting’ technique. The final step in this scientific investigation included reporting what they found. Atoms shared in detail with their classmates their results, so they could begin to brainstorm ideas for their 'new' glue.
5. Wednesday, March 23rd, 2022—As the Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school Atoms prepare to celebrate Kindness week, we want to share with you a Kindness project completed by the 5th-grade students. For their project, the Atoms focused on The Positivity Project's character traits of Kindness and friendship. Students were tasked with considering, discussing, and writing what 'kindness' and 'friendship' mean to them. Following the project, a group discussion was held within each classroom to share ideas about how we can create a welcoming and inclusive environment, especially for new students. After the group discussion, the Atoms put their creativity to the test and created a 'mock-student' with words and sentences that reflect their personal views on how they can outwardly demonstrate kindness and friendship to others. These 'new students' will be hanging in each classroom to serve as a visual reminder of the student's commitment to maintaining a positive, inclusive and welcoming environment built on kindness's foundation. We are building excellent, welcoming citizens, one friend at a time!

Wednesday, February 9th, 2022—It may be spring, but who doesn't love a good 'throwback?' In February, Utica Academy of Science junior-senior high school ENL students visited the Clinton Arena for an ice skating field trip. For many of the students, this was their first-time ice skating. As one can imagine, there were a few falls, but teamwork was always on full display in true Atom fashion. By the end of this field trip, all the students were skating like future Olympians.
2. Friday, March 4th, 2022—On this ‘Throwback Thursday,’ we are sharing an art project from Utica Academy of Science junior-senior high school. This project focuses on self-love and perception. Many people, including teenagers and young adults, face varying insecurities about themselves. The goal of the 'What Makes you Different, Makes you Beautiful' art project allowed the students to explore through art the different 'faces' and insecurities they have within themselves and create a collage. Their artwork shows them with their masks off, and they shared why (or why they don't) wear their mask. This art project was very moving and allowed the students to realize that they are more alike than they are different. Everyone can have a tendency to feel insecure about themselves, and it's important to empower others and be kind to one another.
3. Friday, March 11th, 2022—The Utica Academy of Science elementary school students in Ms. DeAngelis & Ms. Flihan's class embarked on a trip 'under the sea' where no snorkeling gear would be necessary. For this trip, students put their creativity to the test when making animal defense models. For this hands-on, minds-on class project, students could select one of the following animals: sea turtle, crab, pufferfish, or lionfish. Upon selecting their animals, Atoms created their defense models based on the animal's structure. This fun and creative project allowed the students to think outside the box and apply what they learned.
4. Monday, March 28th, 2022—Utica Academy of Science elementary school's Miss Tayler and Ms. Renee's first-grade class welcomed Oneida County Sheriff Officer Rob Maciol and Sgt. Morgan as guest speaker and readers. During their visit, Mr. Maciol and Sgt. Morgan shared with the Atoms stories about their families and their impressive 20+ years in law enforcement. Mr. Maciol and Sgt. Morgan shared that as a County Sheriff, it is their responsibility to protect and serve the community and help those who call 9-1-1 in Oneida County. In addition to supporting the community, County Sheriffs also enjoy visiting the school and being guest speakers and readers. Following sharing about their career, Mr. Maciol read to the student the story, 'The Bad Seed.' Thank you, Mr. Maciol and Sgt. Morgan, for taking time out of your schedule to come and speak with the Atoms. Thank you for being a first-responder and for keeping our community safe.
5. Monday, April 4th, 2022—Court may not be in session, but Utica Academy of Science elementary school welcomed a guest speaker (and the guest reader), Supreme Court Judge David Murad who spoke with the first-grade Atoms. During his visit, Judge Murad shared with the students his legal background and career as a Supreme Court Judge. He also shared some legal advice (pro-bono, of course), read one of his favorite storybooks, and left the Atoms with excellent advice - to always act fairly. We want to thank Supreme Court Judge David Murad for taking time out of his schedule to come and speak with the Atoms!
6. Wednesday, April 6th, 2022—We won’t spare any of the details on this strikingly fun-filled field trip with the Utica Academy of Science junior-senior high school 11th-grade students. Leading up to Spring Recess, the Atoms headed to the alley, the bowling alley that is for an afternoon of laughter, excitement and of course bowling. This field trip was a great way to kick-start Spring Recess, and everyone (teachers included) had a striking great time. A special shout out and thank you to Mr. Bullis for arranging this bowling field trip.
7. Friday, April 8th, 2022—This may seem a little 'crazy' to you, but if you are a member of Utica Academy of Science elementary school's newest Math Club, The Crazy 8's, this is business as usual! Before Spring Recess, the Crazy 8's meet for an afternoon of math, fun and excitement. With hands-on, minds-on learning, Atoms have been able to apply what they have learned in the classroom to the STEM activities in Crazy 8s. Over the last few weeks, students have solved math problems using dice, playing Bingo (on a life-size board), plotting coordinates to find buried treasure, and making (and testing) marshmallow catapults. We all knew that math could be this much fun! Thank you, Crazy 8s, for helping bring math to life and all the fun and excitement.
8. Friday, April 22nd, 2022—Mulch like the Atoms, plants always keep growing especially when they are cared for and nurtured. To celebrate Earth Day Utica Academy of Science elementary school planted seeds to highlight the importance of plants in our life. We hope everyone had a happy Earth Day!
9. Sunday, May 1st, 2022—In honor of National School Principal's Day, we want to thank our Utica Academy of Science Charter Schools Principals for their hard work and commitment to the students, teachers, faculty, and staff. You are not only the driving force behind Utica Academy of Science Charter Schools but the heart and soul of all of our Atoms. We are Many Atoms, One Family. Happy School Principal's Day!

1. Friday, April 8th, 2022—Syracuse Academy of Science high school ‘future scientists,’ Miguel Mathis and Makayla McMullen receive an opportunity of a lifetime when their project about Microbial Fuel Cells was the only one selected to attend and present their research at the CNY Energy Symposium. Lab partners, Mathis and McMullen, have been working on their Microbial Fuel Cells to develop portable electricity using dirty and recyclable materials. Throughout the symposium, students met and networked with companies and scientists worldwide and attended workshops. The highlight of this experience for Miguel and Makayla was the opportunity to meet many distinguished scientists, learn about their work, and hear about their attitudes towards life. Congratulations, Miguel and Makayla, on being selected to participate in the CNY Energy Symposium. This is an incredible honor, and we are all very proud of you!
2. Friday, April 22nd, 2022—Saving nature is always in style with the Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school Atoms! To celebrate the 52nd Earth Day, students did their part by helping clean up the campus. Atoms rolled up their sleeves and helped pick up trash, sticks, and raked leaves. In addition, throughout the Earth Day week, students learned about how they can help keep the Earth clean, make an impact in their community, and fun facts about Earth Day.
3. Sunday, May 1st, 2022—In April, the artwork from Kindergarten to 4th-grade students at the Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school was displayed at the Beaver Lake Nature Center. In collaboration with the Region 3 of the New York State Art Teachers Association (NYSATA), students created artwork that fit the themes of nature, animals, and landscape. On Sunday, May 1st, artists and their families celebrated this monumental achievement with a reception hosted by NYSATA Region 3. This 'Art Naturally Show' allowed families to celebrate their young artists' success and achievements and to view works of art from students throughout CNY. Congratulations to all of our Atoms; we are proud of your accomplishments!
4. Wednesday, May 4th, 2022—The first week in May, is National Teacher Appreciation Week. Today, SANY would like to take the opportunity to highlight the incredible team of teachers we have at Syracuse Academy of Science Charter Schools. Each day, Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School teachers dedicate their time to the success of every student. They provide hope, stability, knowledge, and life lessons and profoundly influence the lives of every Atom they work with daily. Our teachers provide opportunities for students to not only learn through innovative lessons and experiences but continue to grow and succeed. Please join SANY in honoring our teachers and by sharing your appreciation with them this week and in the weeks and years to come. Thank you, teachers, for all you do and continue to do for our Atoms and their families. We are Many Atoms, One Family!
5. Friday, May 6th, 2022—Much like moms, muffins help make the world go round! Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school celebrated all the fabulous moms and maternal figures on a beautiful afternoon at its annual Muffins for Marvelous Women event. This time-honored event was the first time Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school has been able to host this event in over two years. We were excited to be able to bring this event back and enjoyed seeing all the families in attendance. We hope everyone had a happy Mother's Day. Thank you, moms, for all you have done and continue to do in your Atoms' lives. Please click here to view additional pictures from Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school’s Muffins for Marvelous Women event.
6. Sunday, May 8th, 2022—It's Mother's Day! To all our 'Super-Moms,' Aunts, Grandmas, and motherly figures, we wish you a delighted and relaxing Mother's Day. Thank you for everything you do in your Atoms' life. Your hard work and dedication certainly don't go unnoticed. We hope you have a happy and memorable Mother's Day!
7. Monday, May 9th, 2022—Out of 1,748 participants, Syracuse Academy of Science high school student Miguel Mathis took home 3rd place, and a $1,000 award from the Arconic Foundation for innovation in sustainable design or material science at Society for Science's Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) held in Atlanta, Georgia! Miguel's project was about Microbial Fuel Cells and how we can build them sustainably to generate electricity from bacteria and treat wastewater. Throughout ISEF, Miguel met and networked with companies and scientists worldwide. Without the support, encouragement, and drive to work hard from family, friends, teachers, and lab partner Makayla McMullen, this wouldn't be possible. Congratulations, Miguel; we are very proud of you and all you have accomplished!
8. Wednesday, May 11th, 2022—To all of our school nurses, Syracuse Academy of Science Charter Schools would like to thank you for all the fantastic work you are doing to bring health and happiness to the Atoms and their families. 9. Wednesday, May 11th, 2022—It's time to 'strike up the band' with Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school's first-grade students in Ms. Dickinson's class. As part of their monthly family project, students and their families put their creativity to the test when making homemade musical instruments that represented cultures celebrated in their family. To construct their musical instruments, Atoms and their families could use any items found around their homes. Some of these instruments created include guitars, maracas, and harps! Rock on, Atoms, and keep up the great work!
10. Friday, May 13th, 2022—"The whole place was dressed to the nines, and we were dancing like we're made of starlight." — Taylor Swift, "Starlight." Syracuse Academy of Science high school seniors and juniors enjoyed an evening to remember at the Links at Erie Village for their annual Senior Ball. An evening that many of the upperclassmen look forward to and count down the days until it arrives. A night where everyone dresses from head to toe in glitz and glam and looks like royalty. From stretch limos to Slingshots to a night spent with friends, this is one of the many high school memories that the Atoms will cherish for a lifetime.
11. Saturday, May 15th, 2022—SANY Superintendent Dr. Tolga Hayali was honored and celebrated as one of United Way's 100 Heroes. 12. Wednesday, May 18th, 2022—The Science Academies of New York (SANY) is excited to announce both Syracuse Academy of Science Charter Schools and Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship Charter Schools have received their full five-year extension. Receiving a five-year extension from New York State and the Board of Regents is a tremendous accomplishment and no easy feat. To receive a five-year full-term renewal and/or expansion from New York State and the Board of Regents, charter schools must show a high standard for academic success and financial integrity. All SANY Charter Schools since 2003 have always received a full five-year term. We are glad to see this tradition continuing this year with SAS and Citizenship. In the 2022 - 2023 school year, Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship Charter School (SASCCS) families can look forward to welcoming students in grades 7-12th to its new location in Liverpool, New York, at the former Nate Perry Elementary School. This 27-acre campus will be the new home for the Atoms in grades 6-12th. The elementary school location will remain in Syracuse, New York. While we are Many Atoms, One Family, there will be a new name for SASCCS. The new name will be Citizenship & Science Academy of Syracuse Charter School (CSASCS). We want to thank the leadership team for preparing all the detailed work and the excellent staff, students, and parents for always believing in us. We look forward to continuing to build success, One Atom at a time.
13. Friday, May 27th, 2022—Teamwork makes the dream work at Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school! Throughout May, Atoms learned about the character trait of teamwork. Students learned that teamwork is the combined action of a group of people, especially when effective and efficient. Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school celebrated the students who demonstrated the character trait of teamwork at its Students of the Month ceremony. We want to congratulate our Atoms on showing what it means to be a great teammate, demonstrating the character trait of teamwork, and being May's Students of the Month! Congratulations, Atoms; keep up the great work.
14. Saturday, May 28th, 2022—Over the last few months, the Syracuse Academy of Science high school's Congressional Awards students have been busy at work exploring the great outdoors and seeing what Central New York has to offer in efforts to complete their exploration requirement. For this requirement, students are to plan and lead a trip that allows them to be immersed in an unfamiliar environment or culture. During their journey, students must complete 6-8 hours of immersive activities per day to earn a day toward this requirement. Syracuse Academy of Science high school, Congressional Awards students visited Niagara Falls, Rochester, and the Adirondacks to fulfill this exploration requirement. When visiting Rochester, the Atoms walked by the Genesee River, explored the downtown area, and saw the High Falls. Over Memorial Day weekend, students spend time in the Adirondacks camping, swimming at Golden Beach Campground (a first for many students), and hiking up on the Blue Mountain. We want to thank Mr. Serkan and Mr. Yaman for their help and support in arranging the Adirondack trip for the students. For many of the students, this was their first-time-ever camping, and they are appreciative of gaining this important life skill and having this opportunity. In addition, we want to thank Superintendent Dr. Hayali, Ms. Smith, and Ms. Hahn for their leadership and guidance in introducing and supporting this honorary program at Syracuse Academy of Science high school.

3. Monday, May 2nd, 2022—Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship 2nd-grade students are all wonders! As they begin their new 'Read to Them' book, 'We're All Wonders,' by R.J. Palacio, the students reflect on what kindness means to them. The story, 'We're All Wonders,' is about a boy named Auggie, who is like any other child but looks a bit different due to his facial deformities. Since Auggie looks different from other children, many of his classmates make fun of him and treat him with disrespect. When this happens, all Auggie wants to escape on an adventure with Daisy to a world where he feels like he belongs. Student Teacher, Ms. H, read to the Atoms the story and discussed the story's central theme - choosing to be kind to others above all else. Following the story, all the Atoms and teachers in 2A pledged to choose kindness even when it's hard, when it goes against our friends and when we're feeling bad.
