I. Superintendent’s Report

SAS

  1. Monday, November 30th, 2020—Syracuse Academy of Science High School choir students deliver a moving social justice performance that you will have to see and hear to believe. In collaboration with Syracuse University, students practiced for months both in person and on Zoom to learn the song, ‘Make Them Hear You,’ By Stephen Flaherty. This song was selected as the lyrics spoke to the students and allowed for great discussion of the social justice nature of the lyrics and the importance of every voice being heard. Students would then record their section of the song and send it to Ms. Carlson who would then edit the pieces to create the performance. This performance served as the music for Mrs. Merrithew’s social justice art project. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e37VnOcN3vw

  1. Tuesday, December 1st, 2020—Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School counselor, Mrs. Wittchen creates a unique program that would allow for its students to connect and share their thoughts during these unprecedented times. The program, Mrs. Wittchen’s Pen Pals. Students share not only their thoughts, but experiences during these challenging times and how they are feeling. Each student who writes, draws, or simply colors a picture to Mrs. Wittchen will receive not only a letter back, but a self-addressed return envelope with postage, and some fun activities.

  1. Thursday, December 3rd, 2020—It’s story time, virtual of course, with the Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school Atoms! One of our many favorite activities is inviting members of the community to read classic children's books to the students for story time. This year we continue this activity, but virtually. We are excited to invite and welcome Syracuse University School of Education, Dean Joanna O’ Masingila who read ‘The Foolish Tortoise,’ written by Richard Buckley and illustrated by Eric Carle.

  1. Thursday, December 3rd, 2020—Do you recognize any of these famous paintings? We certainly do! The Syracuse Academy of Science 8th grade Atoms participated in the famous Art Challenge where they used household objects and props to recreate masterpieces.

  1. Friday, December 4th, 2020—Congratulations to Syracuse Academy of Science high school student athlete, Daniel Pontello for being selected to play on the Section 3 OHSL Central Second Soccer Team!

  1. Tuesday, December 8th, 2020—Earlier this month, Syracuse Academy of Science collaborated with Onondaga Community College and OCM BOCES and provided a virtual adult education information session that provide an opportunity and resources for those who were looking to continue their education or looking to take classes that could help them in their career or future endeavors. We are excited to share that we had an incredible turnout with over 100 participants, which was much higher than what we had last year. At this time, we would like to thank all of you for making this virtual event possible!

  1. Wednesday, December 9th, 2020—It seems like yesterday that Syracuse Academy of Science Middle School held its science fair event. The Atoms eagerly conducted impressive experiments ranging from vaccines all the way to water filtrations (and everything in between). Little did we know at the time what 2020 would be like, and the awards and medals the students would receive for placing in the science fair were delayed. On Wednesday, December 9th teachers Ms. Smith and Ms. Burke delivered the medals to the current middle school 2019 science fair participants.

  1. Friday, December 11th, 2020—A virtual field trip to a bee farm was all the buzz for the Syracuse Academy of Science kindergarten Atoms. Students watched the lead beekeeper demonstrate how to harvest honeycomb and learned interesting bee facts. Did you know that bees have two stomachs? During this virtual field trip, the students were able to apply their knowledge from learning about plants, pollination and bees by asking questions and listening to the presentation. This virtual field trip certainly was the bees-knees!

  1. Friday, December 11th, 2020—It was pawsitively a great virtual story time with News Channel 9’s news anchor, Christie Casciano, Sunny 102.1 radio personality Rick Gary, and their furry friend Ringo. This dynamic trio read to the first grade students one of their favorite books, Ringo is his Name-o, which is about their four legged friend who helps bring smiles, laughter and joy to everyone he meets. Ringo is a certified therapy dog who is active in the Syracuse community visiting schools, nursing homes and any place where therapy is needed. This virtual story time is one that you certainly don't want to miss, and did we mention there is audience participation needed? Listen, follow along and watch as we get ready to learn about Ringo and his many adventures throughout the community.

  1. Monday, December 14th, 2020—As seen on the Food Network, Syracuse Academy of Science alumna, Tykemia Carman, the proud owner of Crave Dessert Studio, recently competed on the Christmas Cookie Challenge. This Food Network competition aired on Monday, December 14th at 10:00 PM. Tye did a fantastic job, her desserts certainly made the viewers at home's stomach grumble and crave a sweet treat. We are proud of you, Tye!

  1. Monday, December 14th, 2020—Earlier this month the Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school welcomed back its Monday/Tuesday hybrid students. To commemorate the moment, the Atoms flexed their creativity and muscles, socially distant of course, in their PE and Art classes.

  2. Monday, December 14th, 2020—There may be a lesson or two in this Virtual Story Time with News Channel 9’s Dan Cummings. Today, Dan read some of his favorite Aesop’s Fables to the 2nd grade Atoms. Before we settle in for this story time, let’s take a look at the history behind these well known short stories or fables.

  1. Thursday, December 17th, 2020—With the snow falling all around us overnight by the inches it led to Syracuse Academy of Science’s first snow day. As like much of 2020, this snow day looked a bit different. For the students of Ms. Peryea’s 2nd grade class they took full advantage of their ‘SNOWnline Learning Day.’ Students woke up extra early in anticipation of a snow day. With the jump start of the morning, Atoms were able to complete their daily assignments. Their reward, an afternoon of snow much fun!

  1. Friday, December 18th, 2020–Syracuse Academy of Science elementary Atoms learn a new computing language and skill that allowed them to crack a very impressive code. That language is one none other than Binary Code! Our Binary Buddies used the numbers 2, 1 and 0 to convert their names into Binary Code for this fun STEM and computing activity. The first grade Atoms remembered to ‘save often’ when writing their code by creating their very own necklaces. The beads on the necklace correspond to the numbers in the Binary Code and the alphabet.

  1. Monday, December 21st, 2020—Earlier this week, Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school recognized its students and staff at the December virtual Student of the Month ceremony for demonstrating the character traits of caring and compassion. 1. Monday, December 21st, 2020—We are all passionate about various events, current or in our history. The Syracuse Academy of Science 7th grade Atoms of Mrs. Mathis' class are about to learn how propaganda and the media can be a means of persuasion, and how it was influential in historical events such as the Chinese Culture Revolution. The Atoms will be preparing to learn about this revolution in history through the eyes of a 12 year old named Ji-Li Jang. To get ready for their upcoming lesson about the Chinese Culture Revolution, the students were tasked with creating propaganda artwork of events or issues they are passionate about.

  1. Tuesday, December 22nd, 2020—On the cusp of winter recess, and all through the halls not a creature was stirring not even an Atom! The Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school teachers were busy at work creating a very special holiday message to all of their wonderful Atoms. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIlOIGhMWLY

  1. Tuesday, December 22nd, 2020—Do you ever catch yourself wondering or imagining what life may be like in a different town or city (or planet)? Maybe it’s a place where you can make all the decisions? If you have ever caught yourself dreaming or imagining this place you are certainly not alone. The 6th and 7th grade Project Based Learning (PBL) classes teamed up to complete a project together where they were tasked to create a society. They had to determine not only what this place would look like, but the rules, the government, the behaviors, the societal norms and so much more. Once their town was complete they were put into a 'mock world' where they were given the following scenario.

SAS Citizenship

1. Monday, November 30th, 2020—Keeping the health and safety in mind for all, the week after Thanksgiving recess was virtual learning for Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship School. Despite the distance, teachers put their creativity to the test (and with the help of technology, thank you Zoom), were able to connect with their students and share this week’s Positivity Project’s character strength, kindness.

2. Tuesday, December 1st, 2020—Mrs. Badman is a teacher who certainly embodies a ‘Positivity in Action’ mindset when it comes to her students and their families. This past week, the students have been learning about the character strength, kindness and how they too can show kindness through their thoughts, words and actions. Leading by example, it's the little things in life that really go above and beyond to express kindness, caring and appreciation. Each day, Mrs. Badman reaches out to her students and their families either through a phone call or a simple text message to show her token of appreciation and that she was thinking of them.

3. Wednesday, December 2nd, 2020—Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship Atoms were recently learning about the Positivity Project’s character strength of creativity. There are many ways and forms for people to find a creative outlet and to express themselves. One of those outlets is through arts and crafts. Combining the character strength of creativity and a lesson about puppets, and a little help from teachers Ms. O’Connor and Ms. Diorio for delivering the supplies, the Atoms are busy at work expressing themselves when making their very own hand puppets.

4. Monday, December 14th, 2020—Everything adds up when the Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship hybrid Atoms are back in the building. 5. Monday, December 21st, 2020—Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship Atoms and snowmen are the coolest! Thanks to the hard work throughout the year from the students in room 1A, teacher Mr. Cognetti delivered on his promise to build a huge snowman. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUvmYBcLz0c

6. Tuesday, December 22nd, 2020—Throughout the month of December, students, faculty, staff and its community members rallied together to collect and donate non-perishable food items to the local organization, The Food Bank of Central New York. With a month long food drive and various virtual events Atoms everywhere answered the call to action to help feed America. It’s with everyone’s generosity and good will that we are proud to share we were able to donate 536 pounds of food to the Food Bank of Central New York. Now this is what we call positivity in action.

7. Tuesday, December 22nd, 2020—Welcome to Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship school’s first-ever ‘late night’ (or maybe afternoon) of the ‘Citizenship Tonight’ show hosted by our very own Mr. McGriff. Similar to all your favorite late night talk shows, the ‘Citizenship Tonight’ show will share important topics and information of events taking place at Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship school. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0-QbqsJxCA

8. Tuesday, December 22nd, 2020—Throughout the month of December, Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship school hosted a can and food drive to help those in need, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the Food Pantry of Central New York. In addition to the can and food drive, the elementary school hosted its first-ever Winter Wonderland drive through event for the students and their families, and the Syracuse community. The school was decked out with twinkling lights, and holiday music could be heard for blocks. Teachers, faculty and staff all wore festive attire and face masks while waving to their patrons who drove through their Winter Wonderland lights. Guests were able to donate non-perishable items to the can and food drive, as well. We are excited to share that with the generosity of all, we donated 536 pounds of food to the Food Bank of Central New York.

9. Tuesday, December 29th, 2020—Over Winter Recess, the Kindergarten Atoms at Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship school received a very special knock on the door from teachers Mrs. Merritt and Miss Ward. 1. Tuesday, December 15th, 2020—This year has been challenging for most, especially for the elderly in the community. With guest and visitor restrictions in place throughout the state, seeing a friendly smiling face whether a student, family member or friend has been hard to come by. In efforts to rectify this, the Utica Academy of Science High School Atoms were busy at work brainstorming ideas on how they can make this better. The best way to spread a little holiday cheer, is by writing cards to those near and dear. Led by Mrs. Swancott, the High School Atoms join together on Zoom to write and design holiday cards to send to the residents of the Masonic Care Community in hopes of bringing happiness, joy and some friendly holiday cheer.

    1. Friday, December 18th, 2020—Throughout the month of December, the Utica Academy of Science high school Atoms were busy strength training, working on their fitness and well possibly planking thanks to a friendly competition courtesy of Mr. Wagner. 2. 2021-22 lotteries: All lottery was held for all schools. All seats are filled and there are around 400 students in waiting list and around 1000 students in Syracuse. ELL student ratios will be obtained later once the admitted students are tested.

3. UAS/Frankfort Public hearing: Superintend attended Frankfort public hearing for UAS moving its middle school location into Frankfort. Few parents also attended to support our school.

4. Utica construction hardship: When the school decided to build its own building at Utica, school learned that State’s facility department expects that school must follow public school construction process. This takes very long time (just approval/planning takes at least a year or more) and it is against the nature of charter schools since we do not get approvals from NYSED for 6 months to a year before the change which requires the construction. Also, the requirements by the State facility increases the initial cost of the construction due to extensive architectural requirements which are beyond rented space. The school learned that renting an existing space is easier and faster to get approvals and there are several cost savings related to approval phase. In addition, it (getting approvals, planning of construction) took too much time of the Superintendent who should have focused on academic activities. The school realized that renting an existing space might be a better option for the school in the future.

5. Charter School Office UAS Mid-Term Site Visit: The school submitted requested documentation. Site visit dates are not released yet, and they may want to meet with board as well.

6. Update on a case by a former employee against the school: Discussed at executive session.

  1. Friday, April 30th, 2021—The 7th grade artists from Syracuse Academy of Science middle school impress us again with their creativity, detailed drawings and of course their talent! The Atoms have been learning about Israeli sculptor Yaacov Agam who is best known for his contribution to Optical Art and Kinetic Art. For their latest assignment, students experimented making their own optical art by creating agamographs, which are a series of images that change at different angles. Atoms were tasked with focusing on merging two separate drawings that could be deciphered only when viewed from each side of the agamograph!

  2. Friday, April 30th, 2021—The Syracuse Academy of Science middle school students in Ms. Brett’s 6th grade art class created colorful kaleidoscope designs inspired by radical drawings that are simply on point. The Atoms have been busy learning about the artistic style of Radical Balance which occurs when elements or objects are positioned around a central point. To achieve this style, students used not only their artistic talents but their math skills, as well, as they folded and traced a repetitive pattern to create these ‘rad’ designs!

  3. Wednesday, May 5th, 2021—Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school had the privilege of virtually welcoming Assemblywoman Pamela Hunter from Assembly District 128 to speak with the Atoms. During her virtual visit, the students learned about Assemblywoman Hunter’s leadership role and involvement in the community, fun facts and stories about her dog Barkley and items in her office that she treasures dearly.
