Illness trend:
Sore throat, fever, malaise, cough (deep, productive, harsh), likely viral.
There is always a risk of strep. If sore throat > 3 days, see Dr. If your student has been directly exposed (sibling/parent/close friend) to strep throat, and they are complaining of a severe sore throat, see Dr. as needed, prior to 3 days from onset of symptoms.
Influenza has greatly declined. What we are currently seeing, is influenza-like, but most test negative for actual Influenza.
As with any virus, the longer it lingers, the higher the risk of developing a secondary bacterial infection. If at any time your child gets a fever, mid-illness, that is considered a "red flag" for a possible bacterial infection. Seek medical care within 24 hours of onset.
Fever free (unmedicated) for 24 hrs prior to return to school will greatly decrease the spread of infection to others.
