Today is was reported to me that there has recently been a few cases of strep throat. Strep throat is a bacterial infection, that requires antibiotics to prevent advancement of illness.

Symptoms may include:

  • severe sore throat
  • petechial (pinpoint purple dots) in back of throat/roof of mouth
  • white streaks in throat/on tonsils
  • fever 101 or greater
  • stomach ache (mostly in younger children)
  • poor appetite (due to sore throat)
  • thick, muffled speech (from throat involvement)

If your child has a sore throat >72 hrs (3 days), unexplained fever >72 hrs, or either of these symptoms, with a light pink sandpapery rash on their torso, a Dr appt is advised to rule out need for treatment. If your child exhibits these symptoms, but have been directly exposed (family member, close friend) to strep throat, do not wait the 72 hrs. Seek treatment in 24-48 hrs post exposure, if your child has any of the symptoms listed.
