Today's Goal: Today students will be able to use integers to represent real world situations/
What are integers?
Integer: Any number in the set {... -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, ...} where the ... means the numbers continue forever.
Positive Integers: These are integers that are greater than zero.
Negative Integers: These are integers less than zero.
Describing with Integers
We use integers to describe situations. The integer describe the meaning of zero.
For example, if someone lost 5 pounds by exercising that is a decrease. Their previous weight would be zero and we would use -5 to describe the situation since their weight is now 5 pounds below the zero (pervious weight).
Another example: If someone deposited $10 into their bank account we would use the integer 10 (meaning +10) as zero would be their previous balance and putting in $10 would be adding or increasing their balance.
Graphing Integers
We graph integers on horizontal a vertical number lines. To do this we simply put a dot on the place on the number line that corresponds to the value of the integer.
Example: Graph -3 on the horizontal line below
