Estimate Products

Today's Goal: In this lesson student will be able to estimate with decimals and whole numbers. Operations to be included are addition, subtraction, and multiplication.

Estimating with Decimals

For Addition, Subtraction and Multiplication:

1. First round each number to the greatest place value.

Remember to round a number look on digit to the right.

If the digit to the right is:

0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, the number stays the same.

If the sight to the right is:

5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, round the digit up one.

2. Now, do the math, add, subtract, or multiply.

Be sure to line up the ones place (which lines up the decimal) when you are adding or subtracting.

Example

Practice Sites

IXL Practice - Only can do a few problems a day but good practice.

Pac Man - Eat the ghosts that have the answer to the estimation problem at the bottom right hand corner of the page.

When Multiplying remember to use the shortcut.

For Division

We will cover division later as the process is different. It requires rounding to compatible numbers.
