Today's Goal: Today students will be able to divide fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by fractions, expressing them in simplest form.
To divide a fractions and a whole number:
1. Change the whole number to a fraction by placing a one under it as a denominator.
Remember this works as a fraction is a part to whole relationship Placing a one in the denominator indicates that one piece makes a whole item. The numerator then tells us how many whole items we have. So, the value is the same, just expressed as a fraction.
2. Now change the sign to multiplication and flip the second fraction. Even if the second fraction is the one made from a whole number, it is ok to flip it.
3. Next multiply the two fractions straight across.
