Today's Goal: Students will be able to multiply fractions and whole numbers together.
Multiplying Fractions or mixed number with whole numbers.
When a whole number shows up in a multiplication of fractions problem you need to turn the whole number into a fraction.
- If one of the terms is a whole number just put a one for a denominator.
- Remember a fraction means the numerator is divided by the denominator.
- If we divide any number by one it is that number.
- That is why it works to put a one under a whole to make it a fraction.
To Multiply Fractions & MIxed Numbers:
- Put a one under the whole number.
- Multiply the numerators (top numbers) together
- Multiply the denominators together (bottom numbers)
- Simplify your answer.
- If your answer is an improper fraction, you may leave your answer as an improper fraction or turn it into a mixed number as long as it is in simplest form.
