Writing serves a multitude of purposes, from making a shopping list to writing a letter or email to submitting a job request to telling a story to processing our emotions--and much, much more.
There are four basic MODES of writing:
Expository (to inform someone, non-fiction, sometimes technical writing).
Persuasive (to convince someone of your point of view, non-fiction, can be beautifully written or utilitarian).
Descriptive (to paint a picture using words; this can be poetry or prose, creative or utilitarian).
Narrative (to tell a story), usually very creative.
Not all writing fits neatly into one of these four categories, however; blogs and journals could hit all four modes, for example.
But when we talk about CREATIVE writing, we're thinking about making beautiful lines or sentences, sometimes writing fiction and sometimes non-fiction (but in a creative way). Nearly all of it is personal, from our own artistic point of view.
In this unit, you will be writing short fiction, short descriptions using the best language possible, and poetry, and in all of it you'll be using figurative language and analogy and rhetorical tropes and schemes.
