Stan Lee, creator of so many comic book characters that there's not room to list them all, recently died (November of 2018) at the age of 95. He was Marvel Comics' creative leader for decades, and his death was sad for millions of comic book fans.
One of his signature catchphrases was "Excelsior!"
In the spirit of Excelsior, here's a project--worth up to 15 points--that allows you to be creative and think about your own dreams and goals!
The project has two parts:
1) Questions to answer that everyone does (word processed in MLA format) and then...
2) Your CHOICE of a creative project to go with it (all require some writing, and this goes on the same electronic document as your answers to the questions.)
You'll be submitting ONE document with all of your writing on it.
Some of you will have less writing and more other, creative, work, to accompany this document.
Some of you will have your entire project be written.
Details and Resources below!
The Two Questions EVERYBODY types up (MLA format):
1) What is the definition of "Excelsior" from the dictionary? (Tell me, in your answer, which dictionary website or hard copy you used.)
2) Find a Stan Lee quotation where he uses the word (check out resources to your right). What does he say (quote him exactly with quotation marks)? What do YOU think he MEANS by this?
Your Creative Project Options. Choose ONE:
A) On poster board or large, quality paper, make an acrostic with the word EXCELSIOR, vertically on the page. Then, for each letter, associate with a word that reflects your own goals, dreams, and hopes. Remember, the words you pick have to share a letter with the letter of EXCELSIOR you're associate it with.
In addition, add a written explanation on your document explaining briefly why you chose each of these words.
Examples of Acrostics:
B) Write a poem or a song about EXCELSIOR, at least 25 lines long, and using regular meter. Your writing should be word-processed on your document.

E) Create a piece of visual artwork (using whatever materials you wish) and then write a couple of paragraphs explaining your artistic choices and how they apply to EXCELSIOR. (Possible ART POINTS as well as ENGLISH!)
F) Build a model or diorama of what EXCELSIOR could mean to you. On your document, write two paragraphs explaining your artistic choices.
G) Create a poster-sized collage of text and images that signify EXCELSIOR. Include a couple of paragraphs explaining your artistic choices. (Possible ART POINTS as well as ENGLISH!)
