Public Health introduces students to the breadth and depth of public health and its significance in their lives. The course increases the health literacy of students and helps them recognize how their own health behaviors influence the health of the greater community. Each unit offers exposure to a broad range of public health careers and demonstrates both differences and inter-relatedness between public health and health care disciplines.

Guest lecturers, award-winning videos and lessons, and student-driven health campaigns give students ample opportunity to build skills needed to conduct an outbreak investigation or develop a plan to address chronic diseases in their community. These skills and experiences will prepare them for a variety of careers, healthier life choices and volunteerism in the field, including becoming lifelong advocates for public health.

It is a blended learning course that employs online instruction to support learning, and students submit work in an online portfolio. All students are required to participate in the CT Student Innovation Expo, which takes place on a Saturday in May. It is the culminating event of the yearlong effort highlighting teamwork, problem solving, presentation, and 21st century skills. Speakers from the public health field are invited to speak according to the interests of the class.

This course is not open to seniors who opt for early graduation.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of one year of lab science. Priority will be given to seniors. Note: This course is not approved by NCAA.
