Applied Science Research I, II, and III is intended for sophomore, junior or senior students who have demonstrated interest in pursuing research in biological, physical, medical and/or engineering sciences. Students will conduct a multi-year independent science experimental research project under the mentorship of the instructor and field scientist(s). First year students will explore the methodology of science research through the examination of empirical literature, presentations and projects. Second year students are expected to find and correspond with a mentor who is an expert in the field of study, develop and conduct an independent research project and present the results of their research at spring semester science fairs. Third year students will finish analyzing collected data and will write and present the final research reports at all available local, state, or national fairs, symposia, or competitions. Each senior student must also attempt to publish their research paper. The program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to: 1) Interact with practicing scientists; 2) Participate in a significant research experience; 3) Develop the skills of reporting and presenting research results; and 4) Select, develop and conduct an independent research project (Applied Science Research II and III only). Projects started during Applied Science Research I may be continued during Applied Science Research II and III. Students in all three levels are required to participate in the CT STEM Fair in February and the end of the year NHS Science Symposium.

Prerequisite: One year of laboratory science is required to enroll in ASR I. Successful completion of ASR I is required to enroll in ASR II, and successful completion of ASR II is required to enroll in ASR III. Freshmen may be considered for ASR I with department approval and application. Seniors may enroll in ASR II.
