Biotechnology Half Year

Forensics Half Year

This is a challenging full year elective open to juniors and seniors who have completed at least two years of a laboratory science, including biology. It will be a heterogeneously grouped course open to all levels of students. The first semester will focus on biotechnology. Topics covered will include bioethics. heredity and molecular genetics, DNA analysis, genetic engineering, genetic diseases, DNA and stem cell based therapies, environmental biotechnology/genetically modified foods, and the biotech/pharmaceutical industry. The second semester will focus on Forensic Science. Topics covered will include the history of forensics, crime scene investigation, forensic pathology and the analysis of DNA, blood, fingerprints, drugs, glass, hair, fibers, handwriting and documents. This course places heavy emphasis on laboratory work. Students will use authentic research equipment and techniques to perform experiments and solve Biotechnology and Forensic Science problems. The course will provide training in laboratory skills that can be used in a molecular biology lab. For some students, the course will provide a taste of a possible career in a science research field, and for others it will provide an opportunity to acquire proficiency in laboratory skills that can be applied to any laboratory setting.

Prerequisite (HONORS BIOTECHNOLOGY): Successful completion of two years of a lab science including Honors Biology. Successful completion of Honors Chemistry is highly recommended. Priority will be given to seniors.

Prerequisite (CP BIOTECHNOLOGY): Successful completion of two years of lab science including CPA Biology. Priority will be given to seniors.
