Stony Brook University Simons Summer Research Program

Eligibility: rising seniors

The Simons Summer Research Program gives academically talented, motivated high school students who are between their junior & senior years the opportunity to engage in hands-on research in science, math or engineering at Stony Brook University from June 29 to August 11, 2015. Simons Fellows work with distinguished faculty mentors, learn laboratory techniques and tools, become part of active research teams, and experience life at a research university. Please note that the selection process is competitive: over 300 applications are typically received for the program which can accommodate ~40 students/year. Each high school can nominate 3 students. SEAP provides an opportunity for students to participate in research at a Department of Navy (DoN) laboratory for eight weeks during the summer.

CODE2040 Fellows Program

MIT Research Science Institute

Extremely competitive, RSI is open to Juniors with PSAT scores over 76 in math with a combined score of 220

The Research Science Institute (RSI) is an elite opportunity for anyone interested in challenging themselves personally and academically. The RSI is held over the summer at the campus of the MIT in Cambridge. There is no charge for this program.

Rockefeller University Summer High School Science Outreach Program

Goal is to engage students with opportunities to do hands-on, mentored, scientific discovery. Two year commitment preferred! Highly Competitive! There is no charge for this seven week program running from late June to early August. Students must commute daily.

Monell Science Apprenticeship Program

An intensive seven-week internship allows students to participate in structured research experiences, as well as in a number of enrichment activities. The budding scientists gain an increased appreciation of the chemical senses, and also valuable experience in the world of working scientists: a demystification of science, the development of critical thinking skills, and hands-on experience of the scientific process. Follow-up evaluations from past participants show that the vast majority of apprentices pursue degrees in science.

Internships at Oneonta Biological Field Station in Cooperstown

Eligibility: at least 16 years old

A successful candidate must have a strong academic background in environmental or natural sciences. High school intern summer stipend: $1,500 - 1750. Housing and transportation are not included in these internships. If you would like to inquire about the possibility of staying on the Oneonta campus, you will need to make arrangements with the summer program.

The Summer Science Program (SSP) in Celestial Mechanics

Eligibility: juniors and seniors at least 15 years old taking calculus

Five week residential enrichment program in which gifted high school students from around the world complete a challenging, hands-on research project in celestial mechanics. By day, students learn college-level astronomy, physics, calculus, and programming. By night, working in teams of three, they take a series of telescopic observations of a near-earth asteroid, and write software to convert those observations into a prediction of the asteroid's orbit around the sun. SSP takes place on the campus of Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California. The maximum any family would pay in 2011 is $3,950 (much less than our actual cost of $6,200), to cover everything except travel to and from campus. Generous financial aid available.

Stony Brook University Research Scholar Program for High School Students

Opportunity for high school teachers and students to perform research on the forefronts of polymer science and technology together with GARCIA faculty and staff. Students work as part of focused research teams and are taught to make original contributions of interest to the scientific community. In addition to entering national competitions, the students are encouraged to publish in refereed scientific journals and to present their results at national conferences. Our goal is to convey to the students the excitement we enjoy daily in research. The program has no set time limits.

Roswell Park Cancer Institute Summer Research Program (Buffalo NY)

Roswell Park Cancer Institute offers summer research experiences to students who have completed their junior year of high school. This is a competitive program designed for talented high school students throughout the country. There is no charge for this seven week program. Housing is provided at a nearby dormitory at approx. 700.00 for the summer. Admitted students must be present for the entire 7-week program.

University of Iowa Secondary Student Training Program

Students who are currently (academic year 2014-2015) in grades 10-11 may nominate themselves for the Secondary Student Training Program (SSTP), a five-week residential summer research program at The University of Iowa. Students will conduct scientific research in university laboratories under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Students will also produce a research project/paper as a part of the program.

Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research Program

The program is an eight-week program in which high school students from diverse backgrounds are invited to perform basic research with Stanford faculty, postdoctoral fellows, students and researchers on a medically-oriented project. The goals of the program include increasing interest in biological sciences and medicine in high school students, helping students to understand how scientific research is performed, and increasing diversity of students and researchers in the sciences.

Texas Tech Clark Scholars

Intensive seven-week summer research program designed to attract gifted high-school juniors and seniors from around the country. The program allows students the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with outstanding faculty in a research intensive setting. The program also includes weekly seminars, discussions, and field trips. Each scholar receives a $750 tax-free stipend and room and board for the duration of the program.

The Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor, Maine

Under the guidance of a mentor, students integrate into an ongoing research program, develop an independent project, implement their plan, analyze the data and report their results. Each year, the program consists of about 30 students from around the United States, from both high school and undergraduate institutions.

Liberty Science Center Partners in Science Program

Eligibility: Currently in 10th or 11th grade

Partners in Science pairs applicants who are selected with professors at nearby universities in order to provide them with first-hand research experience. High schoolers work with their mentors for eight weeks in conducting experiments, analyzing results, and compiling a research paper. At the end of the summer, Partners in Science participants present their research through oral presentations and research posters at the LSC Partners in Science Symposium.

Michigan State University High School Honors Science, Math, and Engineering Program

Eligibility: Currently in 11th grade

HSHSP is a seven week, intensive summer research program designed for motivated juniors from across the United States who wish to gain more experience conducting research. Its goals are not only to educate individuals about the research process but to provide the right kind of social context for such knowledge and expertise to flourish.Very competitive and successful, apply early!

UC Davis Young Scholars Program

Eligibility: Currently in 10th or 11th grade

The UC Davis YSP is a summer residential research program designed to expose approximately 40 high achieving high school students to the world of original research in the natural sciences with emphases on the biological, environmental and agricultural sciences. Students will work one-on-one with research faculty and research groups in state of the art laboratories for six weeks.

Feinstein Institute Student Internship Program

Eligibility: currently in 9th, 10th, or 11th grade

Each summer, approximately 10 Long Island students work with mentors at this Research Institute on their own biomedical research projects during this 8-week program. Interns attend weekly seminars designed to enhance their experience, such as laboratory safety, basic laboratory techniques, how to read the scientific literature, and a selection of research topics.

HOPP Summer Student Research Program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center

Eligibility: Currently in 10th or 11th grade

If you are interested in science, our eight week summer program offers an opportunity to work in a state-of-the-art laboratory facility and explore the kinds of questions that researchers are asking today. We can nominate only two students for this program, so voice your interest asap. Students receive a stipend upon completion of the program to offset commuting costs.

UChicago Research in the Biological Sciences (RIBS)

Eligibility: Currently in 10th or 11th grade

Research in the Biological Sciences (RIBS) is a four-week intensive training program designed to expose students to a broad range of molecular, microbiological, and cell biological techniques currently used in research laboratories. Students are immersed in the research experience, giving them a taste of "life at the bench".

Baylor University Summer Science Research Program

Eligibility: Currently 11th grade

The purpose of this four week High School Summer Science Research Program (HSSSRP), an annual program established in 1991, is to give superior high school Juniors hands-on research experience by working on research projects with Baylor University science professors in many disciplines. Fees include room and board approximately $1400.00 as well as travel to Texas.

National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Summer Internship in Biomedical Research

Eligibility: 16 years or older prior to June 1

Participants join a research laboratory for a minimum of ten weeks between June and August and conduct research in selected areas of investigation under the guidance of an NHLBI intramural research scientist. Required is a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Applications must be submitted online. While applications may be filed between Nov. 15 and March 1, early applications are encouraged.

Cornell University Research Apprenticeship in Biological Sciences (RABS)

Eligibility: Currently in 10th, 11th, or 12th (younger than 18) grade

If you're a serious, research-oriented student with a passion for science, this innovative, highly selective program will give you the rare opportunity to join a top-notch laboratory at one of the world's leading research institutions. Open to juniors only. The $9575.00 program includes 4 - 8 Cornell credits, room and board and all program related expenses. $65 application fee.

Princeton University Laboratory Learning ProgramEligibility: 16 or older

In support of Princeton University’s education and research mission, the University hosts exceptional high school students each summer to conduct research under the mentorship of Princeton faculty, staff, and students. The number of opportunities varies each year and is typically in the range of twenty to forty students total. The High School Research Program (HSRP) is an advanced high school program in which students are paired with a BNL scientist. The BNL scientist mentors the student on a research project during a six week summer session. Student must arrange housing/transportation. Open to juniors.

Smith College Summer Science and Engineering Program

Four-week residential program for exceptional young women with strong interests in science, engineering and medicine. Each July, select high school students from across the country and abroad come to Smith College to do hands-on research with Smith faculty in the life and physical sciences and in engineering. Girls who will be in high school (grades 9-12) in fall 2015 are eligible to apply for the summer 2015 program.

Hofstra University Summer Science Research Program

This program gives high school sophomores and juniors the opportunity to work with Hofstra University faculty to conduct science and mathematics research. Selection for entrance into this program is selective and is based on high school science experience, a personal interview and the high school teacher's recommendation. The program runs from early July through the middle of August with costs ranging anywhere from $1,500 to $5,600, depending on residence and meal options.

Boston University Research Internship in Science and Engineering

Eligibility: rising juniors

Opportunity to conduct university-level research in state-of-the-art laboratories, alongside some of the sharpest scientific minds in the country. This six-week honors program provides full immersion in the laboratory environment.

Summer Internship in Field Biology and Environmental Monitoring

Research teams made up of faculty, staff, selected graduate and undergraduate college students, and high school students focus on specific areas of concern such as water quality monitoring, fisheries management, biological control studies and surveys. High School internships last 9 weeks and also run 5 days a week, 8AM to 4PM. All students participating in an internship are responsible for organizing and executing a project. Scholarships are available.
