The Academic League team participates in a round-robin style academic competition along with ten other schools in Somerset County. Each match is played in the format of a turn-based 60-minute quiz game, and following the completion of the nine-week season, the students and teams are ranked against every other student and team in the state. Questions cover nearly every subject, including fictional characters, sports, current events, historical figures, foreign culture, physics, and fine arts. MHS is represented by two teams in the Academic League: varsity and junior varsity. Each team competes against peers who are at the equivalent level within their respective school. Montgomery has been very successful in each season of the Academic League, consistently placing within the top three teams at each tier of competition. For the past two years, the varsity team has secured a top place finish and junior varsity has placed second.
American Chemical Society
montgomeryacs@gmail.com
With more than 161,000 members, the American Chemical Society (ACS) is the world’s largest scientific society and one of the world’s leading sources of authoritative scientific information. A nonprofit organization, chartered by Congress, ACS is at the forefront of the evolving worldwide chemical enterprise.
Chemistry is all around us. The air we breathe is dictated by the laws of chemistry, our movements and actions have a deep root in chemistry, and even the ice cream we eat was made by chemistry! Taking this into account, the purpose of ACS is to adapt our knowledge of the subject with our daily lives in an interesting and unique manner through activities such as, but not limited to, labs, guest speakers, and a potential field trip to the Frick Chemistry Laboratory in Princeton University. Founded on the spirit of discovery, passion, and service, ACS provides members with an abundance of opportunities. ACS will provide both independent tutoring by upperclassmen established in the field of chemistry as well as group sessions in preparation for assessments. Furthermore, members will get the opportunity to develop their own research project, which can be presented in a STEM event at the end of the year.

FIRST Team 1403 Cougar Robotics has been competing in FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) competitions since 2004, winning a wide range of awards and earning high rankings at competitions. Each year, students build a robot to compete against other high schools from all over the world. Due to the magnitude of this task, participation on the team is year-round. The team structure is broken down into two sides, the robot and the team side, and each side consists of four teams. On the robot side are the mechanical, electrical, programming, and design teams. On the team side are the audio/visual, communications, business, and strategy teams. During the preseason, students are taught everything pertinent to their specific team. During the six-week build season, students take what they have learned and apply it in either building the robot or in team activities. After build season, the team competes in several competitions throughout the region. Last year, Cougar Robotics achieved a first place victory in the FIRST Mid-Atlantic Robotics District Competition at Bridgewater-Raritan for the first time in the team's history. A major component of Team 1403’s activities is inspiring the younger generation through STEM education. To achieve this goal, the team participates in a number of community outreach events from conducting summer enrichment camps to interactive demonstrations.
Discover Club
discoverclubmhs@gmail.com
In Discover Club, we take articles from popular science magazines such as Scientific American, Discover, and Popular Science and have stimulating discussions about them. These topics range from the teenage brain to dark matter in space, so there is a wide variety of material. The purpose of this club is to help students understand and grow to love science outside of the basic science that is taught in classes at school. We also encourage students to find inspiration from these articles to become more involved in other clubs in school and potentially find research internships or ideas to pursue later on in life. Our discussions are guaranteed to be fun and engaging, so join to be a part of this wonderful group of people as soon as possible!
engineermontgomery@gmail.com
Engineer Montgomery is a club about applying your scientific, mathematical and creative skills through many challenges. In this club you will get to learn about different types of engineering fields while doing hands on challenges to get a feel for the projects they may work on in the real world. Guest speakers will also help club members throughout the year to inform students of the jobs or projects they are working on. Members will choose their own teams who will compete against each other in order to produce the winning design. Club members will also get a chance to help younger children with simpler projects in order to introduce them to different types of engineering. This will be done through community fundraisers and through visits to the Elementary Schools. Dream, plan, and create with Engineer Montgomery!
The Cougar Coders Club mission is to stimulate interest and inspire career paths for young minds, both boys and girls alike, and prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow to effectively contribute to the modern technology-driven world. iGEM was a new club in Montgomery High School during the 2013-2014 school year. We are a group of 40 motivated students hoping to pursue careers in STEM and management. iGEM stands for International Genetically Engineered Machine and is a club based on synthetic biology. Using bacterial transformation and genetic engineering, we are focused on creating simple solutions to everyday problems. Our team structure is broken down into three main branches: Research and Development, Operations and Technology. On the R&D Team, members participate in rigorous research and are able to gain wet lab experience through the various practices needed to create a needed protein. R&D members do not have to have taken biology, as we will teach all members during our preseason. Operations works to keep the team structure stable as well as manage administrative tasks. Finally, Technology works on the team Wiki, which is entered into competition on its own. In June, we participate in an international symposium competition held on the campus of MIT. This past year, we had designed a plasmid, bacteria DNA, that would help adolescents reduce acne production. Through this, we have learned so much about science and hope to inspire the next generation of STEM professionals.
Monty InvenTeams
montyinvent@gmail.com
The Monty InvenTeams consists of a group of high school students, who are excited to explore the challenges within the community and to create a project that addresses these problems. Math League
Math League has a meeting every month, where each meeting will begin with a focus on one kind of really fun type of math problem or puzzle and an amazing trick for solving it. Then the rest of the meeting will consist of people informally playing math games or solving math puzzles. There is no required level of mathematics ability! All are welcome to explore the countless inquiries in the field of math. In addition to the club meetings, there is a math league team that competes in the Central Jersey Math League. These are individual based math contests that are set as qualifiers for the American Regional Mathematics League competition, which takes place closer to the summer. We meet on Wednesdays in the math hallway.
Science Bowl
Science Bowl is a Jeopardy!/Quiz Bowl-themed contest that contains topics largely in science and math. In this fast-paced contest, students use buzzers to answer questions in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, mathematics, and general and earth sciences in order to earn points for their team. Every year, a regional competition is held at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratories, and the winning team is selected to attend the National Science Bowl competition in Washington D.C. Come if you are interested in science or math and want to have fun while doing it! Our club meets every Friday during the second half of Unit Lunch.
Science League
Science League is a regional competition that assess students' knowledge in various science classes offered in the high school ranging from Physics, Environmental Science, Chemistry, and Biology. Once a month for four months starting in the winter, interested students will visit a school where all the high schools affiliated with Science League in the area will come to participate in the test. Afterwards, you will be rewarded with food! The tests assess students' current grasp on the material, so the tests evolve as students learn more and more throughout the year. Science League is not only a great opportunity to expand your knowledge of the subject, it is also a chance to relax with your friends once in a while!
montyscioly@gmail.com
Science Olympiad is a national competition that tests students’ knowledge in various scientific fields. In the MHS team, members choose their events and prepare collaboratively for competitions. We encourage members to actively seek knowledge of how the universe works, and to try and transform our own lives, as is the nature of all scientific endeavors. Watching our launched bottle rocket turn into a speck in the sky, uncovering the greenhouse's countless buckets of colorful, giant mineral specimens, and holding my breadth as my teammates poured sand into the bucket pulling down on our delicate balsa wood tower have made Science Olympiad a very memorable experience for me. I hope you will join the MHS Science Olympiad family and have an equally fulfilling experience!
