Character Breakdown
The Slacker - No job, almost always at the apartment, almost always smoking pot. Well read, but too lazy to apply himself. Stoner wisdom. Brings home a pickled monkey in a jar, throughout the show the monkey talks to him. First to figure out about the grifter?
The Nice Guy - Works in a record store, aging hipster still clinging to his youth. The straight man. Immensely likeable and relatable. The responsible roommate. Has a girlfriend who is more successful.
The Activist - Pseudo politco anarcho crusty conspirator vegan dude. Acts poor but has rich parents, works at a co-op. Really awkward with women. George from "Hate"
The Gay Neighbor - Fashionable, drunk, flirtatious, Buddy Cole from "Kids in the Hall." Visits roommates occasionally to gossip.
The Femme Fatale - A grifter with a ton of cash and even more secrets. Seduces all the roommates and tries to hustle them.
The Thug - Chasing the grifter to get money (or something). Very dangerous, very stupid.
The Girlfriend - A successful painter with her whole life ahead of her. Dates the less than worthy Nice Guy but wants to move on to greener pastures.
Plot
All takes place in dirty apartment.
Frame of something catastrophic happening in the background. Plague of locusts? Invasion?
The “game” of the show is that the Thug and the Grifter cannot be in the same room. Grifter pulls people into bedrooms as Thug enters, etc. Likewise, Thug keeps getting distracted and taken different places by different characters. Nice Guy hiding from Girlfriend while cheating on her, etc. Gay Neighbor lusting after Activist, mistakes him for gay, etc.
Grifter tells one guy she’s pregnant, another guy she’s got cancer, etc.
