Rylie Berwanger

Personal & Academic Goals:

My overall goal is to prepare myself for the next steps after my M.S., which in my mind currently is pursuing a Ph.D. I love being in the field, learning new things, and problem solving. I also love combining science with creativity, especially through making figures and communicating scientific ideas visually.

• Improve in scientific reading, writing, and communication

• Develop a deeper understanding of the volcanic processes that shape the Snake River Plain

• Develop as a field volcanologist! 

• Gain skills to add to my toolkit!

Research Interest:

Physical volcanology, Igneous petrology, Geochemistry, Magma plumbing system evolution

For 10/22:

• Read/summarize:

  •  external report (think about two things that vary a lot)

  • Honjo thesis

• GSA:

  • Identify several talks/posters related to thesis

  • Go to talks/posters and take notes

    • economic geology

    • petrology

    • shield volcanoes, evolved volcanoes

  • Look up the ISU crew presentations and support them

• Keep tracking

For 10/8:

• Keep going with tracking

• {SKN: read/review summaries}

• Finish kriging

• Start reading external report

• Kriging:

  • Do Ordinary Kriging and Empirical Bayesian Kriging (to all major and trace elements)

    • standard scale 

    • Check previous kriging: are there really points with K2O/MgO > 90?

• Read/summarize (see calendar invitation, 9/30):

  • Chadwick et al.

  • Miller and Hughes 

• Continue skimming through (small annotations!- mark key points), go back summarize each section, go back to areas I was confused, then summarize whole thing
