Rylie Berwanger

Personal & Academic Goals:

My overall goal is to prepare myself for the next steps after my M.S., which in my mind currently is pursuing a Ph.D. I love being in the field, learning new things, and problem solving. I also love combining science with creativity, especially through making figures and communicating scientific ideas visually.

• Improve scientific reading, summarizing, writing, and communication

• Develop a deeper understanding of the volcanic processes that shape the Snake River Plain

• Develop as a field volcanologist! 

• Gain skills to add to my toolkit!

Research Interest:

Physical volcanology, Igneous petrology, Geochemistry, Magma plumbing system evolution

Tasks for 9/23:

• Have fun on seminar!

• Kriging: look at ratios of elements -- what is changing in unexpected ways? Look at both SROT-only and with the non-rhyolites

• Continue skimming through (small annotations!- mark key points), go back summarize each section, go back to areas I was confused, then summarize whole thing

  • Discuss with Chloe on which paper we will lead

Tasks for 9/9:

• Try different kriging methods (see Emma)

• For gradient maps: use surface SROT values to look at Si, Mg, Sr, Zr

• Try skim through (small annotations!- mark key points), go back summarize each section, go back to areas I was confused, then summarize whole thing

• Make gradient maps for *just* SROT/basalt

• Current maps: 

  • Check whether drop-outs in Sr and Zr are associated with data gaps

  • look into unexpectedly high values of Si on margins -- are they associated with specific types of deposits?
