Buyers and Sellers

Some colleges keep their financial resources only for families that needed it (Financial aid) while other colleges entice students to enroll through the use of merit aid. Author Jeff Selingo has provided the following list as to whethere a colleges is a seller (Their money goes toward students with financial need) or buyers (their money is used to attract students regards of the family's financial circumstances. Learn more at his website. "Here’s a rule of thumb: On average, sellers admit less than 20% of applicants, while colleges as a whole admit two-thirds. When sellers make an offer, nearly 45% of students accept, compared with a quarter for buyers. And only 7% of the financial aid sellers give out to students is a merit-based discount, compared with nearly one-third of aid at buyers. But there are no hard and fast rules." On  his website he has a really cool interactive tool to explore how a college uses their money (registration required), but the spreadsheet below may prove more useful. Note: He uses six categories in the tabs--be sure to look at different types of college and you just might find your best buy.
