What if my child has a food allergy?

Many children are allergic to certain foods, such as peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, and seeds. We work with parents to consider the needs of these children.

  • Please make sure you notify the school nurse about any dietary restrictions, and if your child requires access to an Epi-Pen.

  • The nurse will formulate a plan of care for your child, which includes making specialists, teachers, and lunchroom personnel, aware of the food allergy.

  • When a student had a nut allergy their classroom then is a "nut free" classroom. A letter will be sent home to make all parents aware that all food brought into the class needs to nut free.

  • Food sharing in not permitted for the safety of all our students

  • Caution is taken in the lunch room. A "nut free" table is available for those with nut allergies.

My child had a chronic health condition. How can I make sure their needs are met during the school day?

The nurse in collaboration with parents/guardians will devise an Individualized Health Care Plan. This document will explain the care, treatments, and medication that may be required by your child while at school. This form also informs the appropriate school staff of your child's needs in order to maximize their safety and access to learning.

How can my child's absence from school be excused?

In order for your child's absence to be excused from school a doctor's note is required. Please have your child's doctor put reason and date of absence on the note.

What if my child's clothing becomes wet or soiled while at school?

Accidents happen. The nurse's office has a supply of clean clothes for students to borrow. Should your child use them please launder and return the items as soon as possible.

My child needs to be excused from physical education class. Do they need a note?

Yes, a note is required. Please indicate the reason your child needs to be excused. If your child can not participate for an extended period of time a note from your child's physician is required.

When are updated physical exams required?

  • Kindergarten entry

  • 3rd grade

  • When a student is transferring into the school

My child takes medication at home. Does the school nurse need to know?

Yes. The school nurse should know about all medications your child takes in case of a medical emergency.

Can the school nurse give my child Tylenol or Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) during school?

Yes, but only if the Tylenol and Ibuprofen medication authorization for is signed for the current school year. The nurse can give up to 10 doses total during the school year. If more is needed an order from your child's doctor is required.

What if my child has head lice?

It is important to note that anyone can get head lice.

  • Any child with active head lice will sent home for treatment

  • Your child's pediatrician may have a preferred form of treatment

  • It is essential to notify the school nurse and the parents of your child's playmates.

  • There must be no active/live lice in order for your child to return to school.

  • If a non-medicated form of treatment is used all lice and nits (lice eggs) must be removed
