All About Head Lice

Understandably, when you hear head lice you immediately start scratching your head, and freaking out a little. This is some information to help you understand lice, and the how to get rid of them.

Per the GDRSD elementary school handbook:

Any student found to have head lice can only return to school once a "chemical" lice treatment has been applied, such as a permethrin or pyrethrin based treatment. If a "natural" treatment is done, then all nits must be removed prior to returning to school.

Please notify the nurse if your child has head lice.

REMEMBER TO COMB,COMB, COMB EVERYDAY FOR AT LEAST 2 WEEKS!!!!!! You need to get rid of all nits(eggs) to avoid re-infestation.

If your child has head lice:

1. Ask your pediatrician what treat they recommend, and treat accordingly.

2. Inspect family members for the presence of lice or nits.

3. Wash bedding, linens, combs, and brushes in hot soapy water.

4. Bag items that can not be laundered(such as stuffed animals) for about 1 week.

5. Comb hair daily with nit comb, starting at the nape of the neck and working your way up.

6. May be retreat in 7-10 days to kill newly hatched lice, but consult physician first.
