English 6A & 6B

Language Arts will provide students a solid foundation in reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing. Students will study the characteristics of various genres through reading and writing. Key texts include short stories, novels, non-fiction pieces and poetry. Writing assignments will focus on students using the writing process to produce well-developed paragraphs with an emphasis on structure and supporting details. Vocabulary development will focus on word meanings, antonyms and synonyms

Advanced English 6A & 6B

Advanced Language Arts is an opportunity for students who are strong readers and writers and are eager to explore Language Arts in depth. This course will provide students a solid foundation in reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing. Students will apply their knowledge in a variety of ways and will work more independently, often at a faster pace than in Language Arts. Students will study the characteristics of various genres through key texts at challenging Lexile levels. Writing assignments will focus on welldeveloped paragraphs and multiparagraph compositions, developing independent revision skills through the process of their writing. Vocabulary development will focus on word meanings, antonyms and synonyms, as well as sentence application and parts of speech.

English 7A & 7B

English 7, a full-year course, engages students in reading, writing and speaking effectively in the English language. The course involves students in reading fiction, nonfiction and poetry for comprehension and appreciation. It includes many varied writing activities: informal narrative, formal expository, technical and creative writing. Students will be presented with a variety of reading strategies designed to increase comprehension.

Advanced English 7A & 7B

This course engages students in an enriched and accelerated experience in reading, writing, and speaking effectively in the English language. The course involves students in reading fiction, nonfiction, drama, and poetry for comprehension and appreciation. It includes many varied writing activities: narrative, expository, technical, and creative writing. Students will be presented with a variety of reading strategies designed to increase comprehension.

A number of factors are used in determining the course placement of our students in Advanced English. These include – FAST, NWEA (MAP), and MCA assessment data, academic performance, previous enrollment in courses, performance on a writing sample, and teacher assessment. Students placed in an advanced or accelerated class will have the opportunity to continue in honors class—from quarter to quarter and from year to year—if they have consistently maintained at least a B- average in each quarter.

English 8A & 8B

English 8, a full-year course, offers a wide and varied language arts experience. The course also emphasizes students communicating effectively in small groups of familiar people. In addition, many varied types of writing activities are examined. Students will be presented with a variety of reading strategies designed to increase comprehension.

Advanced English 8A & 8B

Students in Advanced English should be interested in examining a wide variety of material in a more in-depth fashion, using higher-level thinking skills. The student should be self-motivated and willing to discuss openly in class. Some material is similar to that in a regular English class, but it will be covered at a different pace and, possibly, using a different style. Students will be presented with a variety of reading strategies designed to increase comprehension. (Admission to this class is by recommendation from previous English teacher and other established criteria.) Students placed in an advanced or accelerated class will have the opportunity to continue in honors class—from quarter to quarter and from year to year—if they have consistently maintained at least a B- average in each quarter.
