Gateway Experience
This FACS course focuses on essential life skills that students will use throughout their lives beyond their careers. Students will begin their journey toward becoming independent, productive citizens by exploring what it means to have a healthy lifestyle in the areas of: foods and nutrition; personal finance and how to be a smart consumer; and positive family relationships. Students will be given the opportunity to develop these skills within the world of Family and Consumer Science through applied learning in a lab setting and projects. FACS education provides the bridge needed to connect real world skills with how students will balance healthy living with future career opportunities.
Do you have a passion for food? Do you want to learn more about how foods can impact nutrition and wellness? The Foods and Nutrition course will help students develop skills in food preparation along with a deeper understanding of nutrition and wellness that students will use throughout a lifetime. Course includes hands-on lab projects that apply food safety and sanitation procedures and meal preparation. Students will utilize the design thinking process to develop and execute a family meal which includes adjustments for dietary needs, meal management, food purchasing, and understanding the nutritional value of foods eaten in our daily lives.
