The Basics at DCHS

In this session I will share with you some of the things you need to know about iPad use at Divine Child.

    • iPad Management - Casper Focus and Self Service

    • Displaying your iPad screen to the class

    • AirDrop - Best thing ever? A distraction? Or a bit of both?

    • AirPrint - Yes, you can print from your iPad

iPad Management

Managing a class full of iPads can be a bit daunting. Casper, our mobile device management solution, can help. Casper Focus allows a teacher to lock student iPads into a single app. This can be done for the whole class or for individual students. It is important to realize that this can only be a single app. So students would not be able to jump back and forth between their textbook and note taking apps.

When you run Casper Focus the first time you will be asked for the url to the jss, enter:

casper.divinechildhighschool.org:8443

You will then be prompted for your username and password. This is the username and password you use to login to one of the computers in our building. This is not your email address, just the username.

SelfService is a Web App that Casper uses to distribute content to students. If we have given students a paid app, like Explain Everything, they can find it in SelfService. Additionally we can put free apps there to help ensure students will find the apps you need them to have. If there are books that are available from Apples iBooks Store, we can also distribute them using Self Service.

Displaying your iPad Screen to the Class

There are two different ways you can display your iPad screen to the whole class. One is through AppleTV and the other is through a computer using Reflector. While both work very well neither is 100% perfect.

Note: I don't have any spare stands at the moment. If you need one let me know and we will order more.

AirDrop - Cool Tool or Spawned by the Devil?

Have a video that's too big to email? Want to quickly share a file without resorting to email or Google Drive? If so then you might want to try with AirDrop. The problem with AirDrop comes when students leave it turned on all the time. What can happen is other students may find a randome picture on the internet and then AirDrop it to every student they can see in AirDrop. Needless to say, this can be a bit disruptive during class.

AirPrint

Yes, you can print from your iPad! The printer in Computer Lab B is your best bet. For the best chance of success you should be standing in Computer Lab B when you send your document. Since you have to be there to pick it up anyway, this is not really much of a problem.
