Grade 5
Teaching Guide Unit 1
Pacing 4 weeks plus 1 week for reinforcing/enriching
All unit standards are interrelated. Standards should not be taught in isolation.
5.NBT.1. Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in the ones place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left.
5.NBT.2. Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, an explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point exponents to denote powers of 10.
5.NBT.3. Read, write, and compare decimals to thousandths.
5. NBT. 3. a. Read and write decimals to thousandths using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded from, e.g., 347.392=3x100+4x10+7x1+3x (1/10) +9x (1/100) +2x (1/1000).
5. NBT. 3. b. Compare two decimals to thousandths based on the meanings of the digits in each place, using, =, and <symbols to record the results of the comparisons.
5.NBT.4. Use place value understanding to round decimals to any place.
Students Outcomes:
At the end of this unit, students should be able to ...use whole number exponents to denote
powers of ten.
Explain patterns in numbers when multiplying and dividing by powers of ten as it relates to the number of zeros in a number or the placement of a decimal point.
Read, write, and compare decimals to thousandths using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form.
Round decimals to any place using place value.
Explain how the value of a digit is 10 times as much as the digit to the right or 1/10 less to the left.
