(*) (**)Social Science Survey meets the full year senior requirement for social studies. Social Science Survey will ask the students to survey four distinct area of the social sciences. These areas are economics, American government, anthropology, and sociology. Each area of the social sciences is covered in one 1/2 semester, and students will be introduced to many interesting aspects of social science.
Economics
In the first quarter of the year students will explore ECONOMICS and its role in individual, group, and governmental decision making. Economics is the study of how people, groups, businesses, and governments use scarce resources. An understanding of economic principles is important to good citizenship.
American Government
Anthropology
In the second quarter of the year students will explore and engage in American government. In SS Survey students will analyze the many working parts of American government and attempt to understand how American politics are shaped by region, education, and ideas. An understanding of American government is important to good citizenship.
In the third quarter of the year students will explore anthropology and how anthropologists attempt to understand the origin of human beings and human culture. Anthropology gives students a better understanding of how and why groups have created culture and the universal ways that culture shapes human behavior.
Sociology
In the fourth quarter of the year students will be introduced to sociology and sociological research. Students will explore their own society and apply sociological concepts in the modern World. These concepts will students understand the tendencies that exist in modern American society and how these tendencies shape group behavior. Sociology provides students with context that is important to decision making and good citizenship.
* Students in this course will have to complete the Civi Education Project required on ALL seniors in District 211 social studies.
** Students in this course will have to pass the state mandated Constitution Exam in order to graduate.
