A story of Local Response from Kabaale community, Uganda by Kausar
The dilemma of an unmet need
The hernia protruded from her tiny stomach, covered by the T-shirt she wore. The young mother held her, as visitors talked with her grandmother. Outside the house a visitor asked about treating the hernia. She said, “We can't get her treated, it’s too costly. It would cost 300,000 shillings to treat her at the private hospital.” She kept quiet when someone asked her about the possibility of going to a government hospital.
There is a support group to which her grandmother is associated. The young mother was asked if this support group would be able to help her child.
The support group only helps the elderly.
When we create a group of any sort, we create a barrier between that group and the rest of the world.
Message: Note the unmet needs.
