The Crusades and Trade
Trade has been taking place between Venice, Italy and the East for centuries before Marco Polo. Because of The Crusades, the Europeans had contact with Muslim civilizations and began trading goods.
With this new contact, Muslim knowledge and experiences were shared with the Europeans:
medicine
astronomy
philosophy
mathematics
ancient literature
With the Muslims inclusive society, both Christians and Jews were welcomed to share with the eastern scholars.
Goods brought back to Europe because of this relationship:
oil
spices
new varieties of fruits
The European people wanted more of these goods and led to the trading of these goods and many expensive items:
precious jewels
rugs
fabrics
silk
muslin
taffeta
satin
With little flavour in the European foods, a high demand for the Eastern spices began. Pepper being one of the most valuable, was counted out peppercorn by peppercorn and sold for more than gold. The Italians returned to the seaports Genoa and Venice with these goods and sold to other merchants throughout Italy and Europe.
What were the Eastern countries interested in from the Europeans?
Cotton
Ivory
Wool
Gold
Silver
