As the Europeans were learning more about the world, they were also gaining a better understanding of power and wealth. Once Portugal set up trading colonies on the Indian ocean shores, Portugal became the most powerful trading country in Europe. As Spain conquered the Americas, Spain became the wealthiest country in Europe. Eventually countries, such as France, England and the Netherlands saw that imperialism assisted in gaining power and control over other countries. By the late Renaissance, the western European countries began to compete for these new markets and territories overseas.

Drake was the first Englishman to circumnavigate the world and his attacks on the Spaniards brought riches to England.
Queen Elizabeth I
The queen was well educated and being learned in Latin and Greek. She had a huge appreciation for the arts and understood the need to explore other territories to help her country become a prosperous trading country. Under her reign, England was transformed to a country with much world power.
The success England had in military and economic strength gave the people of England a sense of confidence and pride. This identity became linked with the achievements of their country. Today we call this attitude patriotism.
