The Process -
- Introduce the Unit of Study to Students
- Present the unit's Essential Questions
- Explain what they will be exploring and investigating
- Share vocabulary for the unit
- Administer the Unit Pre-Assessment
- Score and Analyze Student Data (Individually or PLC Group)
- Evaluate and diagnose student learning needs
- Set a SMART goal representing the desired improvement of student performance
- Discuss How to Differentiate Instruction
- From the data, begin to determine student groups and strategies for each group
- Decide how to monitor the student progress and effectiveness of instructional strategies throughout the unit
- Begin Teaching the Unit
- Begin teaching the "unwrapped" concepts and skills with a clear "learning progression"
- Infuse engaging learning activities and experiences
- Utilize research-based, high-impact instructional strategies
- Administer Progress Monitoring Checks
- Administer frequent, informal progress-monitoring checks (Formative Assessment)
- Differentiate instruction based on monitoring
- Evaluate instructional strategies
- Continue Teaching the Unit
- Continue modifying and adjusting instruction
- Continue teaching the "unwrapped" concepts and skills with a clear "learning progression"
- Administer End of Unit Assessment
- Score and Analyze Student Data
- Celebrate successes!
- Plan to address identified individual needs during the "buffer" week
- Enrich, Remediate, and Intervene
- Enrich those students who are proficient
- Reteach (utilizing different instructional strategies) those students who need remediation or intervention
- Reflect on the Unit and Move to Step 12
