When you write a narrative or expository paper, your grade comes from a combination of things. I look at:
spelling
capitalization
punctuation
grammar
ideas
voice
word choice
paragraph formation
topic
Instead of taking off 5 points for this, 1 point for that, I use the hamburger rubric.
When I ask you to write a paper, pretend that I ordered a hamburger. The more you put on that hamburger, the higher your grade.
100 -You gave me a cheeseburger, fries, and a shake.
95 - You gave me a double cheeseburger.
90 - You gave me the cheeseburger I ordered.
85 - You forgot the cheese; it's just a hamburger.
80 - The hamburger was a little cold.
75 - It's just a patty and a bun. I had to put it together.
70 - It's just a patty.
60 - I wanted a hamburger, but you gave me a hot dog.
Grading stories, articles, and other types of writing is very subjective. I do my best to be fair and give grades based on what 4th graders should be able to do. I also take into account the state objectives and expectations when giving grades.
